Battlestar Galactica

Did anyone watch Part 1 on SciFi tonight? I was really worried that they were going to kill the "franchise" with this mini-series, but I was VERY surprised. I taped it, loved it, and can't wait for tomorrow night's conclusion. :)

wondash 12-09-2003 05:39 AM

So far I've only watched the first 30 minutes (watching on Tivo very late). Better than I expected!!!

gnort 12-09-2003 05:54 AM

Hmmm, positive remarks. This may convince me to watch it when the replay it later on.

Cynthetiq 12-09-2003 06:31 AM

it's on the tivo... it will get some eyeball time in the next evening or two.

GSRIDER 12-09-2003 07:44 AM

The show was WAY better than I expected it to be. I got over the changed Cyclons real quick. I'm definitly looking forward to the rest of the story.

Mr. Mojo 12-09-2003 07:44 AM

If you get the chance watch it.

I was pleasantly surprised, I liked it. But then again I went in with really low expectations.

Of course I could have made it better…

Mondak 12-09-2003 07:53 AM

I really liked it a lot too, but I have always been a big Battlestar Gallactica fan, so it was nice for me to be aboard the old girl again.

I liked the concept of . . . wait it appears there are folks reading this that have not seen it so I better shut up on spoilers....

In general, I liked the new storyline. I also liked the "old" Gallactica concept (ok maybe a spoiler but we find this out in the first 5 minutes).

For all the money spent on this thing though, I would think that the Computer Graphics would have been better. I kinda thought that the textures of the ships were far too smooth and shiney. Kinda like they used an old Voodoo card to do it instead of some of the new stuff available. I always liked the burn marks and dirty Vipers that they had.

If you are a fan I would say watch it. It may be a little too geeked out for the general public, but that is not a problem for me.

GSRIDER 12-09-2003 08:15 AM

The reason there are no burn marks
Spoiler: Since the ships are in a "museum" they have all been cleaned up. I bet by the last episode they will be the dirty vipers they were before.

erion 12-09-2003 10:06 AM

I was not disappointed, but I was also not overwhelemed. There wasn't really enough action for my tastes, and Number Six freaked me out in the marketplace -- like really freaked my out. I had bad dreams about it.

I enjoyed the Baltar meets old lady moment. It was a nice insight into his character after he realizes what he's really done. I was also pleased to see that the Galactica still looked like the Galactica, if a bit smoother and larger.

I'll reserve final judgement until I see part II, however.

Lestat 12-09-2003 10:39 AM

I'm hooked, I'm hooked! It's way better that I thought it would be. The baby part was kinda disturbing though.... I'm looking forward to part 2.

That Cyclon chic is hot!

Mondak 12-09-2003 03:44 PM

I hear ya GSRIDER. I just don't know. I just mean they are all smooth looking (READ: Fake). The textures are all wrong kinda like they are from a computer game from 5 years ago or something.

Prophecy 12-09-2003 07:24 PM

I missed first part of this mini-series, I tried to tape it but I forgot to turn the VCR off… Is TNT going to re-run this anytime soon?

Cynthetiq 12-09-2003 07:34 PM

Cycler 12-09-2003 08:23 PM

Good stuff I think series.

portwineboy 12-09-2003 09:50 PM

I love this. I'm watching part II right now for my second time.

The Starbuck character is great. The end of Part II? I won't give spoilers but I yelled out so loud my neighbor called to complain. (evidently people are very quiet in Nippon).

The drunken Col Tighe? The 12 models? The handycam shots of combat? Somewhat (closer than most) realist physics on space combat?

I love it love it love it.

bgivnin 12-09-2003 11:12 PM

I'll have to agree with portwineboy. When I saw the end of Part 2, I just about messed myself. That was the last thing I'd have EVER thought of.

If they don't make this into SOMETHING, I think they're nuts. Hopefully, this mini series lights a fire under someone's butt. :)

Cherry 12-10-2003 05:19 AM

I think the part with the baby was way over the line. It was gratuitous and it discolored my initial interest in the show.

Kadath 12-10-2003 07:05 AM

I watched the second hour of part 1 and all of part 2. It was much better than I expected. Starbuck is still ridiculous, but Olmos was excellent. I add my voice the growing mass that was knocked ass-over-teakettle by the ending. I'd watch a full series if they did one, but I feel like the only reason they got away with the ending they used is that they wouldn't have to deal with the repercussions.

GSRIDER 12-10-2003 08:06 AM

Wait..only two episodes?
I'm speechless. I think the first episode was better than the second. As my son would say... why all the kissing.
That little tirade between starbuck and a the XO was painfully lame to watch.
I wanted a bit more than the gave us here. I swear I didn't know it was only two episodes. I feel kinda ripped off.

Mondak 12-10-2003 08:43 AM

Ass over teakettle over the ending? Did we watch the same thing? I assume you are reffering to the Spoiler: fact that the public relations officer was a cyborg. That was somewhat surprising at best. I kinda actually figured he was.

I think it is lame that Spoiler: Number six is in Baltar's head. That is totally weak. I mean - does she then communicate back to the rest of the fleet, or is she just there.

I agree with the kissing thing and the stupid tirade. I think the making out stuff was all overdone. I am a black and white kinda guy and we only had so much time to spend with the charachters of the Gallactica. I would rather infer the sexual tension and spend more time seeing things about the ship and the technology. SciFi without the SciFi....hrmmmmmm. I can just watch real smut after I am finished if I want that stuff.

GSRIDER 12-10-2003 09:18 AM

Speaking of Mondaks Spoiler Spoiler: Did they establish that #6 was in fact in his head or just his sub-concious. Because at the end she did not know where he was. Which lead me believe that she was not in contact w/ him.

erion 12-10-2003 09:45 AM

I have not yet seen part II (there were other activities taking place in my hourse last night.

7:00 PM tonight and it's all mine!

No, I was referring to the fact that Spoiler: BOOMER WAS A CYLON! That seems pretty fucking suprising!

Or maybe I wasn't paying proper attention?

healyk 12-10-2003 02:03 PM

I taped it and am looking forward to watching it tonight.

I for one don't really care that some characters were modified/reimagined/made into women. That said, there is one thing about the new series that does bother me. My recollection is that, in the original series, the war was between humans and an alien race, the cyclons being a creation of the enemy race. Now the cylons are creations of humanity come back to destroy us? I saw a preview of the miniseries where Ronald Moore claims this represents a 'fresh' retelling of the original. This is 'fresh'?? Haven't we, just this year, had two movie sequels to film franchises where the central theme is humanity threatened by its own creations?

I thought part of the appeal of the original was the overwhelming power and largely unknown nature of the hostile race. The nature of the new cylons seems all too familiar: 'We have met the enemy and they are us.'

GSRIDER 12-10-2003 02:20 PM

I guess my biggest beef with the show is I could not get the movie SCREAMERS out of my head. PKD fans should now what I'm talking about. The whole cyclons "evolving"... it's almost tit for tat.

mirevolver 12-10-2003 04:10 PM

I have to say that as I was watching it, I thought it was great. And then the ending came and I was so annoyed. I can not believe that they ended it on a cliffhanger. With that kind of ending, it shouldn't have been called a miniseries, but a pilot for a regular series.

Ok - I got that.

usually with enough interest it does become one... one of the tried and true things about the mini series format...

Bloodslick 12-11-2003 08:36 AM

I don't have whichever channel this came on, and I can't say that I'd have watched if I did. Battlestar Ponderosa was, well, ponderous to me the first time I tried to sit through a few episodes, and it remains that way when I watch it today. I can never get past the feeling that I'm watching an episode of the old Buck Rogers series.

GSRIDER, I know exactly what you're talking about. Of course, I don't think that any idea seems in the least bit original once PKD had his chance at it. He always seemed to look at the aspects that others ignored.

Cynthetiq 12-11-2003 08:46 AM

weird because "Battlestar Galactica" (1978) [TV-Series 1978-1979] was before the "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979) [TV-Series 1979-1981] unless you are really old enough to remember the 1939 Universal serial "Buck Rogers."

Bloodslick 12-11-2003 09:01 AM

Oh, I don't mean to imply that Galactica came before Buck Rogers; just that the two were nearly interchangable. Sorry if I was unclear.

MahlerIsGod 01-08-2005 08:21 PM

I have to admit it I was impressed! I saw it tonight on NBC for the first time and if they can continue this level of quality and drama on the series then it should be pretty good. I have one question: what I watched tonight was 3 hours long (from 8 - 11) so was this the entire miniseries or some edited/slimed down version? Just wondering and thanks

Kadath 01-09-2005 08:24 AM

Mahler: That was a condensed version of the two-part pilot(originally 4 hours) to shill for the series, which starts on the 15th, I think, on SciFi, because NBC and SciFi are owned by the same company.

Bratwurst 01-09-2005 01:26 PM

Is this going to rerun again? I want to set the tivo to capture it, but I want to get the full four hours. Is that still possible?

stevie667 01-09-2005 04:35 PM

I do love BG, everytime i watch it, even if the storylines are a little confusing or i miss half the episode, there is always something that adds a little bit more depth, or makes you actually understand that decisions and actions have to be made that will save the human race, and they're not always nice.
On the whole it is greatly produced series, and the acting is superb, especially with Baltar and Adama.

As for Starbuck being a woman, i'm just glad the woman they chose is hot :D

crossova 01-10-2005 07:30 AM

i never watched the original, and unfortunately i came in halfway through the first part of the miniseries so i'm a little lost. but from what i can understand is that this is the distant future and humans create robots, robots want to kill off all humans. Last few humans escape and are looking for a fabled place called "earth"...unkowingly there are some robots or cyborgs that are onboard the human ships....am i correct?

anyways, this is a very entertaining show, hopefully the series can keep me interested just as the other series on SciFi

japhyryder 01-10-2005 11:20 AM

I am going to have to rent this I never caught the whole thing on Tv the first time. It was pretty good what I saw though

MahlerIsGod 01-14-2005 05:45 PM

Just a quick reminder, the season premiere is tonight at 8pm (EST). I, for one, will be watching.

Willravel 01-14-2005 09:06 PM

HOLY CRAP!! That is probably the best series opener for a science fiction series I've ever seen. The potential just keeps growing. I can't wait to see this evolve into a classic, perhaps outdoing it's predicesor. If it hasen't already.

MahlerIsGod 01-14-2005 09:27 PM

I liked it a lot. I actually felt a sense of anxiety during the first episode, "33." I went into watching the premiere with very low expectations and came away very impressed. There is a lot of promise here.
