Ain't It Cool News: Cool or annoying?

Man, I'm gonna have to make this a poll. Anyway, I remember a freind of mine in college who swore by this site (www.aint-it-cool-news.com), but I only visited it a few times.

Today I got redirected there for a review and took a look around. Maybe I'm being to harsh, and I don't remember it being this bad, but I thought it was just a crappy website. The reviews are seemingly written by 10 year-old sugar addicts tripping on pixie sticks, my hairball prone cat could have coughed up a better webpage design, and, admittedly, most of the top secret movie info they get just isn't that interesting to me(even if it's about a movie I looking forward to seeing).

What's worse is that all the test screening reviews smack of fanboy ego-tripping. The review author seemingly believes studioheads are hanging on his every word.

Then there's Harry Knowles. I can't believe that there are famous directors out there who actually made friends with him. Don't they know that they've only made him grow more delusional? But maybe that was the point. Maybe the wanted him to think he holds some sway over Hollywood. Knowles does have some influence over his massive geekdom after all. And maybe the studios want some sort of a leash on him.

But I digress. The point is that I consider myself a movie geek, so I'm deffinitely not trying to be a snob here. But the site doesn't even appeal to the basest of my pop sensibilites. So I don't visit it.

But I was curious and wanted to know if you did, and, if so, why?

You need another selection for me.

"Heard of it, seen it, don't mind it, but don't go out of my way for it."

Not a fan of that site at all, for pretty much every reason.

The site design is horrible. It's the internet equivalent of Crayola by Numbers... The fanboy community remind me of monkeys at the zoo flinging poo at each other, and eating their own vomit... I really don't understand everybodies attraction to Harry Knowles - moviemakers and fellow geeks alike.

You mean this guy? People are attracted to that red thing?

personally i always preferred chud.com

Admittedly the website design is horrendous, the kind of thing I was making in the mid nineties when I first started web design I still think the site is ok, the TalkBacks are hillarious because of the amount of verbal abuse that gets flung around. Chud.com and ComingSoon.net are two more great insider sites that I frequent, theforce.net and supershadow.com I go to for Episode III related info.

Basically, it's an ok site for me.
Mostly because I don't know of any others. (I'm gonna try out Mr.Ds' and mattevils' site suggestions soon.)
I agree though, the place looks childish and cartoony and the writing by Harry comes off as all hyped-up on sugar like sadatx said, but, it gets you excited about the upcoming movies, too.
Just take it in small doses and you'll be all right. ;)

The website design is horrid and amateurish. After several minutes I quickly just go to www.imdb.com

I heard of it for the first time in this thread, and found that I couldn't look at the main page for more than a few seconds, never mind click on links.

I have no issues with the content but the layout really needs to be redone. Basically, it makes my eyes bleed. The thing about the internet is, it's really easy for me to go to a different site. If a site's pretty to look at, I'll stay around longer.

I just find Harry really annoying... and now that he has been co-opted... I just feel... meh.

Lasereth 11-24-2003 10:32 AM

The reviewers at AICN are annoying as PISS. I can't read a paragraph at that site before closing it out ASAP. Let's all remember that they're the same guys that said Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Attack of the Clones are easily the movies of the year...
