So, you guys want an Anime forum? Prove It!

This thread is a test to see if there could be enough intereest in anime, manga and related topics to merit it's own forum. I was very much against it at first, but in light of recent topics.. i think it could work. Please do your best to stay on topic and post relevant posts not just "oh that show is cool" types of posts.. Also please post anything new that is related to anime, or animation, or manga in this thread.. I.E. all the spaceghost and futurama threads, etc...So here is your chance fellow TFP'ers.. If you want an anime forum so bad.. you've got to work for it.

To paraphrase Spleen:

"Here is a possible topic starter..What do you like anime, or manga? What are some of your favoire anime OVA's or series? What are you reading or watching now? Are you into fansubbing at all, what are your hopes for anime in the mainstream culture? Know any good "unkown" series to get into? What is your favorite character and why? How long have you been into anime? Notice any differenced between japanese and korean manga/ series? Is Hentai anime? I am wondering because I am a otaku myself, and I would like to talk with other fans out there."

Ready?...GO!

EDIT: Sorry guys i may not have been too clear on the purpose of this thread.. this isnt a poll to ask you if you want a forum or not, it's to see if there is enough intellectual interest to merit Halx creating one. If you really want a forum, please start discussing and participating.

Well, I'm no big fan of anime, but does anyone know when we will see season 2 of Hellsing in the US?

auswegian 08-28-2003 02:38 AM

I would like an anime forum, in order that I could bath in the superior knowledge of more developed fanboys and improve my anime/manga tastes. So yes.

Mehoni 08-28-2003 05:34 AM

Anime-forum yes please.. or one for books. You know, those things with paper in it.. lets call them "movie scripts" ;)

Stare At The Sun 08-28-2003 01:24 PM

There is a season 2 of hellsing!?!?!?!?!!?

O GAWD! kick ass.

Technically not yet. I kept hearing about it for a long time, but it's proally never going to get made. The manga is a little more in depth than the anime because some of the topics it address ed were "too controversial for japanese television", and there is a trailer going around the internet for a Hellising: Dark Psalms or something like that, but.. that trailer is also like a year or more old. There is a Van Hellsing movie comming out soon, but it's live action and stars hugh Jackman (Xmen, X2) and is not related to the anime. Oh well.. :(

On a related note, does anyone know who the band is that plays the music in the series? I know the english song "SHINE" was played by some 80's band.. rush or something :) I heard they were very popular in japan for a loong time after their careers died stateside, but i'll be damned if i know who does the other music.. and i have the sdtk too.
Anyone know?

I'm just getting into Anime here. I've seen Vampire Hunter D + Bloodlust, Ninja Scroll, all of Beserk, M.D. Geist, Record of Lodoss War, and I was really enjoying Cowboy Beebop until they introduced Ed who in my opinion is trying to beat Jar Jar Binks as the most annoying jackass ever. I was looking at picking up Hellsing next and from yours and other opinions sounds like a good bet.

gnort 08-28-2003 05:24 PM

Ive never really been into Anime. Ive seen a few movies, but not much of the different series that are out there. All i have to say is that Akira was great!

sadistikdreams 08-28-2003 10:02 PM

I love ed! she's so cute! But then, i love all comic relief characters heh. :p

Peutetre 08-30-2003 07:12 PM

i have only been watching anime for maybe 2 years now.. but i really enjoy everything that I see. Some of my favorites series are Hellsing, Chobits, Karekano, Saikano, Azumanga Daioh, Photon, Shinesman, Slayers, Lain, Digi Charat, Pita Ten and many others. I also really enjoy Manga as well. I have been reading Chobits, Karekano, Mars, Peach Girl, Wish and Real bout high school.. I usually try to pick things that i can read at Barnes and Nobles for free! Anyway.. I really think that I prefer Manga to Anime because I enjoy reading so much and I think I get more out of the Manga.. but I also really like watching the characters and hearing the Japanese language.. plus for some reason I really like watching stuff with subtitles!

t3m3st 08-31-2003 06:26 PM

go anime forum! ya

Mr.Deflok 08-31-2003 06:41 PM

Has anyone here seen Gasaraki? I'm into Anime but not as much as most, I find the fact that most a series which'll cost you hundreds to complete quite off-putting.

trench 09-01-2003 12:49 AM

I'm probably an anime poseur since the only stuff I see is on Cartoon Network but in the 80's there was a cratoon shown in the U.S. called Star Blazers and I never got to see the final episode of season one to this day and it haunts me.

ZeliG 09-01-2003 09:46 AM

I would have to say yes to an anime forum. well... a blend of anime/manga really damn though I am getting fairly dissapointed from the stuff I have seen/read lately....

jhericurl21 09-01-2003 05:49 PM

has any read the manga's of battle royale and Alive?

CapnWaffle 09-02-2003 09:41 AM

I do enjoy digisubs and scanlations... Although I respect to discontinue searching for a series once it's liscensed.

For commercially available, right now I like Scryed (anime - don't know about the manga),and Big 0 2 on Cartoon Network owns you.

For fansubs and scanlations, I like Naruto (anime - the manga's great too, and you can get it stateside), Hunter X Hunter (manga - only seen bits of the anime), and a manga called Bleach.

Peutetre 09-02-2003 04:24 PM

There is a magazine that manga fans would be interested in.. it is called Shonen Jump and contains Naruto, One Piece, YuYu Hakusho, Dragonball Z, yu-gi-oh, Shaman King. Also Suncoast has a free Manga preview book you can pick up by purchasing manga or apparently the Shonen Jump magazine.. It has some pretty interesting previews in it...

Love Hina is done: any suggestions?

i think Love Hina was funny and touching and the conclusion after #13 surprised me. i thought it was making money and therefore lasting into many years to come.

so what do you reccomend to replace it in my comic buying? i already buy ranma 1/2. i like ken akumatsu's art, is he doing another new series?

thanks

don't give up on the bebop. ed may be annoying, but she doesn't pop up that much, and the rest of the series is absoloutly phenomenal.

other animes enjoyed by Czernobog are:
Trigun
Inuyasha
Lupin III
Furi Kuri
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Ghost in the Shell
Ninja Scroll
and a bunch of others I can't recall right now.

txd 09-03-2003 01:20 AM

Well I'm currently working my way thought the Love Hina Series as well, and I am thinking about starting Chobits after.

I'd love to hear other suggestions also

Asshole Lover 09-03-2003 03:00 AM

i suggest you enjoy every single panel of LH while you can. it gets really good and really satisfying towards the end.

i looked through chobits and i stll may buy a book but the thought of a dude and his computer hooking up make me feel sad reading it.

txd 09-03-2003 03:04 AM

Yeh it is a bit of an odd topic, but I figure I'd give it a chance, also going to get the first 2 battle royale books (3rd may be out by now)

Ganguro 09-03-2003 06:47 AM

The chobits manga is actually VERY well done, and is cute. If you liked Hina, you'll more than likely appreciate chobits. Sure Hideki is "hooking up" with his computer (persocom) but it's not as cheesy as it sounds. Have you seen the anime at all? it's out on DVD now and is worth a peek. Heck.. so is Mahoromatic (which combined with Hand Maid May..makes for 3 android/man shoujo animes that came out around the same time).

Have you looked at Mars?, or Kodocha? those are good series to pick up as well.

Asshole Lover 09-03-2003 02:33 PM

this is going to sound weird...but love hina and ranma and even chobits is not as "girly" as the ones u just mentioned.

i just can't even look past the cover of those even though i am sure it is decent. also i am very picky about the art. i like a clean style like akamatsu and takahashi as opposed to girly stars in their eyes manga.

DownwardSpiral 09-03-2003 04:14 PM

Anime forum. . . yes, good idea.

I havn't read Love Hina, so I don't know if I can reccomend a specific replacement, but I would unreservedly reccomend Bastard!! (published by Viz) Cannon God Exaxxion (Dark Horse) and Lone Wolf and Cub (also DH) .

Side Note: I haven't read any yet, but if the Inu-Yasha Manga (written by the Ranma 1/2 writer) is half as good as the anime, it will be awesome (Viz)

I could not disagree more. Ed was in my opion the best part of Cowboy Bebop.
However, I didn't like the movie nearly as much as the episodes.

I would recomend Kare kano.. it's cute, funny, touching, and not to girlie.. also be sure to check out the tokyopop website they have great summaries of all the manga that they offer..

ninja scroll and ghost in the shell were my introduction to the anime community as well :)

I haven't given up on Bebop yet, but the introduction of Ed made me cringe. I picked up all the dvds after watching the first disc, but have slowed down watching them after meeting Ed. I think I'm currently in the middle of disc 4. Go Anime forum!

holtmate 09-04-2003 07:02 PM

An anime forum would be a great idea! It could really help introduce casual fans, like myself, to other things that we might regularly overlook.
I must say, though, ever since I saw FLCL on Adult Swim, I have been in love with it. I only caught the first episode, and I am currently reading the manga, which is already different, but in a great way.
I am also looking forward to the Trigun manga...does anyone know when that will be released stateside?

gwr_gwir 09-04-2003 08:37 PM

myself, I'm an anime freak - much like hawkeye. I would want an anime forum, simply because there's so much anime (and manga)out there (though hentai others like it could go to Tilted Sexuality). Also, since anime spans the genres - comedy, tragedy, adventure, romance - as well as books, movies, series, and various other publications, it doesn't really fit into any set ... definition that I've seen thus far for a forum in TFP (i.e. Entertainment, Literature, etc). In the possible anime forum, anime fans could talk-rant about the various anime available, as well as post recommendations of the various anime or manga that they have seen or read - such recommendations would likely be taken seriously, if they're intelligent. as to my introduction to anime, that was Cowboy Bebop (excellent), Akira (a true classic), and Jin-Roh and the Wolf Brigade (depressing as all bloody h3ll, but a true classic nonetheless). Since those days, I've watched pretty much any good (I know, a relative term) anime I could get my hands on, and currently, Naruto seems to be a good (ongoing) series.

Discipline 09-04-2003 09:40 PM

hey, I haven't watched anime for a while now. But, that doesn't mean I wouldn't want to watch a good anime film.

If there was an anime forum, I'm sure it'd get me back into anime a bit.

gwr_gwir 09-05-2003 11:09 AM

good films, hm? off the top of my head... good movies not related to series: Jin-Roh and the Wolf Brigade, Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, Perfect Blue, KITE, Memories, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll (I'm not listing Resurrection here because it sucked. long and hard)... that's about all I can think of right now. There's also a bunch of good series movies, too, though those are a lot more.. numerous, to say the least.

Asshole Lover 09-05-2003 05:06 PM

about the actual forum...i think making a sticky and combining all manga/anime threads into it is not gonna show the need for the forum. i think testing it for a month or so in it's own sector would be better. i'm not sure what this thread is accomplishing.

Ganguro 09-05-2003 05:29 PM

did you read the first post?
a whole lot of other people havent apprantly..
the purpost of this thread is to see if there is enough interest in anime/ manga/ related subjects to warrent a forum via TOPICS OF DISCUSSION, , CONVERSATIONS, QUESTIONS, not saying "yay i want a forum"

It's up to Halx if he wants to make the section ro not, and he's not making a forum for a month just to see if titakes off or not w/o actual evidence thatit would be used. Similar to spleen's WWE thread, this is supposed to be a collection fo questions and conversations about one topic.. not a poll.

So far.. i dont think the members of the board are doing a very good job convincing Halx to make anything.. especially if they cant follow a simple direction(request).

I merged your one thread with this one because it was related to the topic, (i felt) but there are still other anime threads that were prexisting that are in the entertainment forum. If those are more related to something on your mind, by all means respond there. I just though if someone liked anime and manga enough to start a new thread about it.. maybe it would do better here.

Asshole Lover 09-05-2003 06:08 PM

yeah but this has pretty much turned into 'yay i want a forum thread"

the posting done in here is sort of everybody knows about how brilliant the beatles are, we all listen to them and there isn't much to say about the beatles anymore. so a thread entitled "beatles thread - discuss" is only going to get you a nominal amount of hits

floonine 09-06-2003 10:12 AM

anime is teh fun, I would like to have a specific place to find out more about it. but that's just me :)

arael 09-06-2003 11:09 AM

i would LOVE to have an anime forum!! OTAKU OF TFP !! UNITE!!!

gwr_gwir 09-06-2003 11:29 PM

in the interests of promoting anime discussion... what do you all think about the various social issues and problems presented in Jin-Roh?

hawkeye 09-08-2003 07:40 AM

I don't know if this is the right thread to ask this, but does anybody have//know where to get a list of the castor shells used in Outlaw Star? (A very good anime, BTW, I reccomend it.)

gwr_gwir 09-09-2003 07:22 AM

also, what are people's ops on what happened in the End of Evangelion, especially to shinji and rei? what about the significance of the indian names used for Spike and Jet in Cowboy Bebop? what do you think about the plot twists in the later episodes of Love Hina, involving the Narusegawa love triangle, as it were? intelligent discussion, people. that's the only way you're gonna get an anime forum. but if that's too hard, and all you want to say is "this anime is good, because it is", then screw that... and you.

Peutetre 09-09-2003 09:13 PM

I thought Jin-Roh was pretty interesting.. not to mention amazing to watch.. It was like it wasn't actually animated. It has been quite a while since I saw it.. but I remember having such an empty feeling at the end.. like I expected more out of the characters. It is hard to think of someone having so much control over your thoughts, feelings and actions.

gwr_gwir 09-11-2003 06:53 PM

mm. if you expected more out of the characters, and liked Jin-Roh, have you tried the series "Now and Then, Here and There"?

Tempboy 09-16-2003 11:27 AM

I'm currently in the process of watching Cowboy Bebop, Gundam Seed, Ikkitousen, Love Hina, with some Naruto spattered here and there. Gonna try and watch Great Teacher Onizuka too.

Anime's great. :)
I'd consider buying manga, but it's so freakin' expensive.

Thanks for the suggestion! I have heard of the series before but hadn't watched it. Here is a link to a review of the series if anyone is interested http://animeacademy.com/library/ntht/ntht.html it seems like a really good series!

If anyone is interested I just found out that Azumanga Daioh manga is out! I just picked up the first book. Azumanga Daioh is a comic strip in Japan that was made into Anime. The anime is cute, funny and moving a great series for men and women to watch. The manga should be even better... ADV is also going to release the anime series as well but i'm not sure when.

*spoilers*

this comedic love triangle(s) turned from good to great when they changed Keitaro. now that keitaro is the stud of the dorm and all the girl's jaws drop at what he has become, then it starts getting good.

most of the crushes are completely comic folly with the exception of 2: naru and mutsumi. he actually had to make a decision at one point between those two. the others falling in love with keitaro are simply school girl crushes meant for comedy. motoko's attraction at the end is almost like an exclamation point showing how keitaro has changed and how motoko has grown up as well.

it shocked me to find out the last book is coming out this week. i felt the best stories were to come of how keitaro and naru will do together as well as the others would react to them. but i guess i understand how this is a logical time to just end it before it got stupid.

Ganguro 09-17-2003 09:55 PM

wow and you wont check out chobits because it's girly? *snickers*
I assume you've seen Love Hina again.. right?

You're still paying about 10 bucks an episode either way..
That's pretty much standard for most anime series unless you are looking at Eva, Robotech, DBZ, etc...

On a somewhat realted note, an article published by Nikkei Business Publications about the common practice of anime productions being financed by groups of investors on the basis of loans based on copyright profit potential may be of interest to English speaking anime fans primarily because it includes a breakdown of how much it costs to produce anime. According to the article:

An average current anime TV episode has a budget of 10 to 13 million yen ($85,000 - $111,000).

A year-around anime TV series (shows like Inuyasha, Naruto, One Piece, Detective Conan) that airs through 4 "kuru" (a 13 week TV "season") costs 500 to 700 million yen ($4.3 - 6 million) to produce.

An average theatrical film may cost 100 to 300 million yen ($850,000 - $2.56 million), but big budget films like Innocence, Steamboy and Studio Ghibli films can have budgets as large as 2 billion yen (as much as 17 million American).

So now you know part of the reason why anime costs so much here in the states. The other part is coporate greed, but it's nice to see some concrete numbers associated with the production for once. Abnimated features are chaper to make than live action ones, but still arent cheap. I remember reading some info a while ago about the now defunct Clerks:animated series and even cutting costs it was costing ABC about 10 grand an episode to produce.

The moral of the story: Dont download liscensed anime.. you're ripping off investors :)

Any thoughts on this?

i actually picked up chobits. it's decent so far, kind of less interesting because it's not a comedy like love hina...

i think love hina is not too girly because it is a comedy (mixed in action and drama to a lesser degree). you take in everything but at the end it's completely meant to be humorous more than dramatic. chobits is not really girly either imo but those other books you guys mentioned are straight forward love stories.

by the way...i'm talking about the manga

gwr_gwir 09-19-2003 11:32 PM

mm. as to cheap anime dvd - try these two sites, in this order: http://www.deepdiscountdvd.com (props to hawkeye for that one) and http://www.discountanimedvd.com

topic of interest: a live-action Neon Genesis Evangelion movie is in the makings. supposedly to be done by the same studios as are doing Lord of the Rings Trilogy, currently, in association with GAINAX. slight problem, though, is that I've heard the storyline isn't going to be "bound" by what happens in the series Neon Genesis Evangelion. Here's hoping it doesn't turn out like the massive fanfic known as Garden of Eva.

Im not sure of exact dates Holtmate, but i know you can preorder the Trigun manga for 10.50 right now. Retail for it is going to be about 15 bucks a volume. Darkhorse is realisng it.. how odd.

gwr_gwir : I've heard about the evangaleon movie for a while now. Personally im not that excited about it. I liked the series a bit, but it's a little too complicated to be pulled off in a 2 hour block. A live action version could trim off some of the "extra" story, but the fact of the matter is.. the manga tells the store a heck of a lot better than the anime did. There is just too much to cover in such a short time span. Plus i dont know if the western world is ready to deal with minors being so deeply involved in "adult" situations.
ex: Shinji's relationship with his father, is abandomnent issues, self loathing, asuka's abandoment issues, dealing with being a child in a position of power, Rei's overall existence, etc...
any thoughts?

agentsmith: this wasn't a poll, but thanks for "voting" :D !

gwr_gwir 09-23-2003 05:44 PM

lesse... as far as you know - is the NGE movie supposed to be the entire series in a two hour block, or is the plotline of the movie supposed to be independant of the series? agreed, the manga covers the story better than the series does, but that's just the nature of manga, and indeed, books in general. As to the readiness of the western world... I don't believe it's ready, but I know also that not everyone would want to go see the movie - some might boycott it for said situations, but they wouldn't be the ones paying to watch it, for the most part. mm. as to Shinji's relationship with his father - I personally believe that Gendo tried to make Shinji that way purposely, so that he (Shinji) would function at the End better than he would if a loving relationship with a father figure was there (from Gendo's POV, that is). As to Rei's existence, I've heard a few different things - mostly what I believe on that note was that she was the mother-eve figure of the End, and that her existence, first and foremost, was that purpose - helping to kill the Angels was secondary. As to Askuka's abandonment issues, I think that's what made her act the way she did, when given power - the relentlessness, the need to be "#1", the constant insults, etc. I think her role was primarily the destruction of the Angels, and not really a major part of the End, except perhaps by accident. thoughts on the Sephirothic Tree that appears when Shinji is "crucified", as it were? or on Adam? or on Terminal Dogma and the Magi?

I think an anime forum would be a great idea. I would love to get some input on some of the shows I've watched/planning to watch, without having to deal with 10 year olds who only like Dragonball Z.

Here's a list of what I've watched and whatnot in the anime world:

Finished Series:
Trigun
Completed Series:
Hellsing
Cowboy Bebop
Neon Genisis Evangelion <3
Gundam Wing
Arcade Gamer Fubuki
Full Metal Panic!
Street Fighter 2V
Big O Season 1
FLCL
Vision of Escaflowne
Blue Gender
Serial Experiments Lain

Still watching series:
Naruto (still airing)
Gundam Seed (still airing)
Ghost in the Shell - Stand Alone Complex (still airing?)
Gad Guard (Still airing)
Full Metal Panic? Fumofuu
Big O Season 2
Star Ocean EX
RahXepheon
Wolf's Rain
Great Teacher Onizuka

Movies:
Akira
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust
Ghost in the Shell
Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door
Evangelion - Death and Rebirth
The End of Evangelion
Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz
Escaflowne - The Movie

Planning to watch:
Gasaraki
Martian Successor Nadesico
Dai-Guard
Noir
Spriggan (movie)
Excel Saga
Heat Guy J
Betterman
Dual
Jin-Roh (movie)
Witch Hunter Robin

I would love to be able to get input on what people think about what the heck happened in Serial Experiments Lain, or what Evangelion ment to you. The maturity level of TFP would warent some great answers from people, which would be great if you ask me.

Did you like Lain? because i liked it somewhat (it's been a while since i've seen it), but I didnt like Niea under 7 the first time i saw that series, and Im still eyeballing the new series written by the creator.. Habane Renmei i think

It was alright. I tend to watch things when I just feel like laying down (I output them to my tv and watch it from my bed) and many times, I fell asleep while watching Lain.

I just recently finished it, and it was alright I guess. I thought I would like it a lot more than I did, because I love Evangelion, which is a great mind-trip series, much like Lain is. But I guess when the characters just sort of stare for minutes on end and there is no actual action, it just makes it boring really.

It was an interesting story I guess, it was just difficult to keep myself from being overly bored by it.

Are you telling me that there is a second FMP series??
I am watching the first one as the dvds come out and Really loving it, if there is more, that would be awesome.

Yep, a 15 part/11 episode (some episodes are two 10 minute episodes in one) and it is so far based (it is still airing) on Sagara being with Chidori in school, and what she puts up with while he is trying to protect her. So far it has been INCREDIBLY hilarious. Lots of really funny stuff in it. Very much worth the watch.

dragonhawk 09-29-2003 01:11 PM

I love Bubblegum Crisis/Crash and the new stuff Bubblegum Crisis 2040.

Anyone here seen them? Comments?

Priss Rules!

gwr_gwir 09-29-2003 10:00 PM

haven't seen bubblegum crisis or crash, but they look decent. as to Serial Experiments: Lain, I thought it was a good series overall - something of a mind trip, but a bit too existential for my taste. interesting storyline and plot twists, though. Has anyone here seen Perfect Blue, Kite, or Memories? (I know at least one of you has seen Kite, and has beaten me for that before. no more beatings, mm?)

Ganguro 09-29-2003 10:54 PM

I've seen Kite and Perfect Blue is a great standalone psychological drama. Kite is the same movie as Mezzoforte I believe, and I didnt like it too much. Reminded me a lot of Noir, but not executed as well.

Baldrick 10-04-2003 02:56 PM

I just watched the first DVD of a series Pioneer has coming out in November - Last Exile. Wow! It was absolutely fantastic, and I highly recommend it!

gwr_gwir 10-04-2003 11:10 PM

what's Last Exile about? how's the animation? in short, why do you recommend it, Baldrick?

Ganguro 10-05-2003 05:12 AM

aww damn it got liscensed?

Last exile is a GREAT series.
It is basicly a civil war taking between two kingdoms. The animation is done by Gonzo and is really goof, and the series overall is great
Great music, good story, great visuals..
I guess i'll be making a trip to suncoast soon..

gwr_gwir 10-05-2003 02:34 PM

why not just get it from discountanimedvd.com? - http://www.discountanimedvd.com/dvd_...asp?dvdno=6282

Sorry, should have mentioned that in my original post. :D It's Gonzo's tenth anniversary series, and they definitely deliver.

The animation is absolutely brilliant, and I really love the soundtrack. It all has a very retro-futuristic feel to it. Basically, the story revolves around two "porters" who make their business flying letters between parties. In one of their deliveries, they get caught between two warring factions in a civil war.

The screener only had the first two episodes on it, but wow! It's really the feel of the series that got me hooked. The first couple of battle scenes reminded me of the old "chivalrous" trench type warfare, but on airships. But even the airships all look like something right out of the fifties! Last Exile truly has a style unlike anything I've seen before.

The story seems to be unravelling slowly, which I like in anime. I hate series that give the whole story up in the first few episodes, and spend the rest of the series just using "filler" because there's nothing new to do with the characters.

Tempboy 10-13-2003 07:22 PM

Bumping this... we still need an anime forum!!

A huge number of new series should be starting in the next month or so.. can't wait to see some of them. :)

Ganguro 10-14-2003 09:03 AM

in the future.. please dont bump something unless you have something to add to it.
I puposely unstuck the thread because i felt it was unfair to stick it and not stick Spleen's WWE thread or the Family guy thread, etc..
If people are genuinely interested they would search for "anime" and see this and hopefully contribute.
A lot of our memebers are all talk, no action.

That being said.. lets get on the subject here.. What series do you think are comming out next month?
Comming to US DVD? or being produced? It's almost the end of most second season series now, and I know im excited about seeing the next stage of exams in Naruto
but im kinda removed from the anime on DVD scene.. so do tell us..
What's comming out?

WinterScar 10-21-2003 01:51 AM

Well, Ganguro, this might be a little late... but the new season has already begun! I'm very busy watching Fullmetal Alchemist, Peace Maker Kurogane and some other series. It looks to be an awesome season, and the only trouble I'm having is trying to have time for all the anime.

Also, I'm just wondering: How are the rules of TFP regarding bittorrent links to unlicensed anime? I know a lot of forums have strict rules against warez, but let unlicensed anime slide past. Is it safe to talk about it here?

I'm guessing it is, since we're already talking about the anime, but maybe linking to it isn't allowed.

Ganguro 10-21-2003 03:57 PM

Ahh i started to watch Fullmetal Alchemist as well.. thought i totally missed out on FMP..
I seriously dont like mecha anime.

I dont see anything wrong with bittorrent links, just explain what you are linking to, and when it's liscensed the fansub groups will remove the torrent. plus i think there is already a link to http://www.animesuki.com on here somewhere.. if that's what you are getting to; but please feel free to elaborate onwhat series you are watching and how to get them, and why. This is a thread for discussion.. the stage is yours.

'grave of the fireflies' is the ONLY movie that has drawn tears from me till now...its so expertly portrayed..i cant bear to watch it again
NGE(neon genesis evangelion) was my 1st series which rocked(still confused about the ending tho)

skier 11-18-2003 12:02 PM

big fan of Metropolis, Naruto, Green Green (don;t ask me why), Hajime no ippo.

anime is a great substitute for television- no commercials, adult themes, no crummy done to death reality shows.

mb99usa 11-18-2003 12:04 PM

I love anime, just don't get to watch it often. The wife is not into it at all.

JS thanks for the site, I'll have to check that out.

nukeu666 11-18-2003 01:07 PM

i havent seen more than 3 movies the past year...only anime :p

you people have to try 'grave of the fireflies' if you can
tis a story about a boy&his little sister in japan suring the american aerial bombing(WW2)
how they struggle to survive after their mom dies, then r thrown out by their aunt and father dies in the war!
makes me teary eyed just thinking about it *sniff*

if only torrent worked thru the firewall :(

Ganguro 11-18-2003 10:32 PM

That beind said.. i would have to put Azumanga Daioh or KareKano down as my favorite series.. but there are lots of good titles to choose from

I currently have well over 210 giggs of anime archived, 35 gigs on my computer now, several box sets, and a bunch of anime soundtracks..
It is my goal to be the OtaKing of southern Nevada someday :) Wanna discuss anything? :)

Eiresol 11-23-2003 09:02 AM

Anybody know if Stand Alone Complex 23-26 have been fansubbed yet?

phukraut 11-23-2003 10:38 AM

if you haven't already, go check out Cowboy Bebop. you will not be sorry.

Rubyee 11-23-2003 10:45 AM

I love anime, and Ryan has a nice collection of it, so that helps.

Things we own-
Cowboy Bebop plus movie
Outlaw Star
El Hazard
Iria
Some DragonBall
Big O
NGE plus movie
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
a couple Vampire Hunter movies
Metropolis
Akira, of course
Blood
X
Ghost in the Shell
Armitage
FLCL
and many others

I reccomend getting your Anime off ebay or other internet sites, a good one is sundevildvd.com. I strongly reccomend not going to Best Buy, Sam Goody, Suncoast, or any other stores like that. Big rip-off.

Baldrick 11-23-2003 05:54 PM

Two of the studios that I've been doing work for over the last couple of years are Pioneer (Geneon) and Bandai, so I've become more of a fan of anime the more I watch.

Some recent series I've very much enjoyed are:

Witch Hunter Robin
Last Exile (probably my new favorite series ever)
Haibane-Renmei
L/R:Licensed by Royalty (GREAT soundtrack)
Captain Herlock

Heat Guy J was okay, but too oriented on action and not enough on story for me.

ickma 11-23-2003 06:59 PM

Watching anime makes me want to bash my head against a brick wall but, to each their own.

arael 11-23-2003 09:30 PM

I can't name all of the anime i have seen (too many!!) favorite by far is probably Evangelion (for serious anime) and Azumanga Dioh (for comedy) I saw a few episodes of Last Exile, does it Balrick, does it get better? the beginning wasn't t all that good

MuadDib 11-23-2003 10:43 PM

Everyone needs to DL an anime called Scryed and watch it ASAP! I have been watching anime for years and this is by far the best I have every seen. Trust me and check it out.

Batman976 11-24-2003 07:51 AM

See, the thing that gets me, is if I'm talking about how I don't like anime, someone will come up with a list of things I have to watch to appreciate it. Then half the time, Cowboy Bebob shows up on the list, which I've seen and couldn't stand. Once I see that I just dismiss the rest of the list. I may give Grave of the Fireflies a chance someday, but if it sucks, I'm going to be very bitter.

Although I have heard of some people who claim not to like anime, but still like Grave of the Fireflies. That's about the only thing that's keeping any interest in the movie alive for me.

Spinach_Indeed 11-24-2003 08:10 PM

Yea. I agree with Batman but in a different light... If I even mention that I enjoy anime, someone unloads a 3 page list of things I have to watch to even be an anime fan. Half the things people tell me to watch, I have no interest in. Like anything Gundam, or must action anime in general just puts me to sleep.

One anime I have been looking to check out is Witch Hunter Robin. I've been considering just diving in and buying the Box Set, even though I haven't seen a single episode. Has anyone seen this series? Good? Bad? Thoughts?

Ganguro 11-24-2003 08:17 PM

Grave of Fireflies is a great movie.. There are lots of good anime OVAs and series out there, just as there are lots of bad ones.. just like any form of media..
Dont dismiss the whole genre because you got caught up in a bad series.. Hell.. i usually stick with at least 3 eps of a series i dont like to see if it gets better.

Spinach , i have WHR, and it's ok..
If you have seen Noir, or Hellsing, or E's otherwise.. it's kinda like that..
It's hard for me to sum it up, so i'll find you a synopsis.
http://www.animeacademy.com/library/whr/whr.html

that is generally a excellent site to see opinions on various anime series/ OVA's..

This is exactly the reason why I still intend to give Grave of Fireflies a chance. Even if I'm not a fan of other anime, or even the animation style, I'm willing to believe there are still some movies that can be good. Still though, if I don't like it, I'm bound to dismiss the entire genre.

gwr_gwir 11-24-2003 11:25 PM

any ops on Read or Die? saw the first ep, seems interesting and great graphics.

If you didn't like the first few episodes, you won't like the series. I was absolutely blown away about twenty minutes in, but it's tough to say exactly why! The story is good (not great), characters are good (not great), animation is really good (but not great). It just....has a feel to it. Very retro-futuristic.

Another very story driven anime title that I enjoyed is Jin-Roh:Legend of the Wolf Brigade.

Ganguro 11-25-2003 05:35 AM

the OVA or tv series?
The OVA is very good, albeit short. its only 3 episodes..
The tv series i think may still be aired in Japan, so im not sure how long it it..
It's not as elaborate as the movie.. becase the udget is smaller, but from what i've seen it's shaping up well..

agentsmith 11-25-2003 01:35 PM

watch Cowboy Bebop, you will wet your pants fo sho because of how awesome it is

phukraut 11-25-2003 02:17 PM

try Spirited Away. i'm pretty sure it was rereleased in the US. i think someone has already mentioned it, but Metropolis is also very good (and visually stunning).
