Deep Impact -- Spoilers --
I was reading this thread about The Day After Tomorrow which seemed to have a lot of whining about sappy love-conquers-all stories, and I thought of Deep Impact as an exception in the world-disaster "genre".
What do all of you think about this movie, in comparison to Armageddon or other similar movies? Imho, Deep Impact is a step above the others -- it isn't a happy ending for 90% of the cast, and if anything is about survival moreso than a sappy love story. |
I liked Deep Impact more than Armageddon. It wasn't all happy. My initial comment was that they portrayed a black president and then the earth was destroyed on his watch. What a cop out IMHO.

I saw this movie once, before my brother "borrowed" my tape and then lost it when he moved.
Wasn't this right before Elijah Wood did LOTR? |
Deep Impact... heheheh... I hated that movie.... Possibly because I can't stand Tea' Leoni (or whatever her name is) so perhaps my feelings on the movie are a little skewed.
But I will admit that, should the world ever be threatened by rocky death from space, atleast now I know that I should stock up on Ensure. Cause if you look every damn person in that entire movie hoards Ensure like it was RadAway. Hell even the White House had crates of the stuff. I will admit it's been a long time since I've seen that movie, like when it came out at the theater, so I don't remember a whole lot from it. But I will never as long as I live be able to get the nightmarish image of Tea' Leoni's mustache out of my mind. And that's why I don't like Deep Impact. ~wait a minute, are you talking about the porno?..... |
Probably the most significant was the TV series,
The Day After Intense. |
I donno, I can't really say. I liked Deep Impact more on an intellectual level, because it was very, very believable. I liked Armageddon on a fun, kick ass ride thru space level. I don't really think you can compare the two, because they do register on different levels. Altho I half expected Bruce Willis to say "Yipee Kay yay mothafucka!" right before he blew up the asteroid.

I was more afraid after I watched Deep Impact than I was of Armageddon. More realistic, as some said, but it also hit closer to home because there were a lot of sacrifices by a lot of people, and that's what real life is.

I liked Steve Buschemi in armagedon, he made the movie very enjoyable and provided great comedy, as did the russian From what i remember, deep impact lacked that somewhat, however, freeman did play a very strong role, and played it well. |
my prominent memory of Deep Impact is that the super-sonic waves created noise.
(if a movie makes a point to mention that the waves travel faster than the speed of sound, they should be silent dammit!) |
Tea Leoni's mustache.... *shudder*

I like the reality type disaster movie. No Hollywood ending. Just showing what would really happen to the world if it faced such a mass disaster. If I remember correctly, The Day After was fairly real, except far fewer people would have survived. That movie freaked me out.
