Lasher
author Ann Rice i love how she mixes historical accuracy with vampire/witch stories |
Just picked "The Talisman" by Stephen King and Peter Straub off of my bookshelf. Realized it was the only SK book that I own that I've never read.
|
Leaving Cheyenne, by Larry McMurtry
Excellent stories |
The Sun Also Rises, Ernest Hemingway.

I've been reading a lot of Hunter S. Thompson lately. Specifically, I have re-read the Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas book and The Proud Highway (a collection of his letters and such from the 1950s and 1960s). A truly unique man. Some of the most hillarious writing I've ever read, yet he seems very grounded and down to earth in his whole philosophy.
|
Just finished Palahuniuk's Survivor, now reading a book called Prophecy by Greg Gorden.

i'm a big reader, so i usually read a few books at the same time...but currently i'm reading:
Queen of the Damned The Great Gatsby Beowulf and i'm still trying to get into the 5th Harry Potter book, but it just doesn't seem to draw me in like the other 4 did, and besides, the other books that i'm reading take up too much of my time. its getting a little difficult to keep the stories straight, but i kind of have a schedule for when i read each book. i read one book a certain day/night and a different one the next day. that usually separates them enough for me to keep the stories straight and remember everything well enough... |
I'm not reading anything right now, probably going to order this pretty soon.

Heretics of Dune, by Frank Herbert.
|
I just finished Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises. Great book. I am now about halfway through the Da Vinci Code, at the insistence of almost everyone I know. It is an interesting book so far, but I dont think it is as good as everyone has been making it out to be.
|
I'm back to catching up on the NJO. Last night I started Edge of Victory II: Rebirth. The books are okay, even good considering they're Star Wars novels. I refuse to read Da Vinci Code. One too many people recommended it to me.
|
I am in the middle of Naked Economics by Charles Wheelan, it's great introduction to economics and there's absolutely NO MATH!
Getting ready for Lolita and A Heartbreak work of Staggering Genius, that were christmas gifts. Also rereading The Things They Carried, an amazing book, one of my favorites. |
I just finished reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas last night, just bought and watched the DVD tonight.
Next up I got The Da Vinci Code followed by The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Quote:

Getting Focused Staying Focused by Alan Jaegar
its a book on the mental aspect of baseball |
It's a suprising light read from what you may expect from previous forays into econ books, Jimmy4. Most school libraries (colleges) should have a copy; the writing is very clean with lots of humor and easy to understand examples.
|
Done with Da Vinci Code. That took all of two days to read. I enjoyed it more for the interesting historical tidbits than the story--I thought the story was very much overrated, and reeked of a cheap thriller. Interesting though, if for no other reason than the little pieces of history interwoven.
Im not sure what to read next... It needs to be something that I can finish withing the week so that when I get back to school I can re-read the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Hmmmm.... |
I have just started Wolves of the Calla - The Dark Tower V :D
|

The guy that translated this version lived in a cave with his mother/wife (so says the lady who was in charge of the cash register when I bought it)...so you can understand that his point of view is, a little odd, to say the least. Now I'm reading Whitney, My Love by Judith McNaught (GREAT book...for the ladies) I started it about 2 days ago and I'm almost done, but I don't want it to end. :( |
JUst finished Reading
Choke and Invisable Monster. I am now reading , The Templar Revelations. |
I just started reading The Elder Gods by David Eddings. So far my opinion seems to be a little higher than the average reviews but I can see it's going no where fast. I wouldn't have given it a chance if I hadn't enjoyed Eddings' other books.
|
reading dracula by bram stoker
next up i got a number of short stoires by edgar allen poe, unless some of the other books i ordered turn up in time |
reading the dragonlance chornicales
yes all of them by marget weis and tracy hickman |
I started/finished Da Vinci code last night. Someone said earlier in the thread that it was a cheap thriller, and in a way I agree with them. What kept me going was the attention to detail and all the puzzles that I'd try to figure out before the characters do (I mean, APPLE, come ON people...). Anyway, it was a fun afternoon. =)

Last Man Standing, David Baldacci.
Merely a fast filler book. Im looking forward to getting back into my Tolkien :) |
My english novels for english class :D
It has a bunch of poetry in it. Not my favorite course, but will give it a shot ;) Thick book though :D |
Splitting time between Star by Star and the Bible. The Old Testament God is a jerk, but he sure loves the Isrealites. The Yuuzhan Vong are just jerks.
|
Finally getting back to the Tolkien. Reading The Hobbit right now. I think then I will go through the Lord of the Rings again, and then on to the Silmarillion.
|
What I'm reading
The Victorious Opposition, by Harry Turtledove. Master of alternative history.
|
I'm reading a Macromedia Flash MX 2004 book, and "The Photoshop CS Book for Digital Photographers"
I really only read tech books these days or things relating to computers |
"Life of Pi" by Yann Martel...so far so good
Just got done with "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues" by Tom Robbins...brilliant just like all of Robbins books. |
Finished The Hobbit, on to The Silmarillion.
|
"Skin Tight" - Carl Hiassen
|
I'm having some serious problems getting into Quicksilver, Stephenson's latest. This is the first book of his that I've been able to put down, which is disappointing. I'll try to read some more today...
|
Norman Cantor - Inventing the Middle Ages. It's a set of biographies of great medievalists and capsule assessments of their ideas.
|

Le Guin 'Return of the King' (for the third time) by Tolkien |
I'm currently reading American Psycho. Excelent book.

|
Karate-Do: My Way of Life by Gichin Funakoshi
It amazing that Ive devoted so much of my life to Shotokan but Im just now reading the founders autobiography |
Refiner's Fire by Mark Helprin. If you get the chance, check out "winter's tale" by the same author. great story
|
Just finishing up "The Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass" so that I can read #5, "The Wolves of Calla"
It had been so long since I've read them, I decided to catch up and re-read the entire series. I can't believe how much I had forgotten about the storyline. I think this is Stephen King's best work!! |
Wolves was great. I consider it his most compelling DT book yet. Previously, I switched between Wastelands and Drawing Of The Three. If you haven't read Insomnia, I recommend that for its DT connection; it's almost like it creates a Dark Tower religion!
Currently: From A Buick 8 - Stephen King (Christmas present) |

For me, I'm between books right now, but I've got a huge list of recommendations from the pile of books I've finished. The standouts: "Life of Pi" by Yann Martel "Lamb" by Christopher Moore |
Im reading two books right now, Grendel, which i absolutely love and a biography on Reagan. Lets just say thats not quite as interesting.
|
Just started The Hitch-Hikers Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It's the funniest book I've read in a long time!
|
"The Mind of the Horse"
R.H. Smythe It's a solid epitemological and phenomenological study of our equine friends... |

Odd Thomas by Koontz. I'm pleased with this book. He's gotten much better since he started out. Though his ideas from book to book are often similar and his lead character generally shows the same sort of characteristics, there are enough distinctions to keep it enjoyable yet familiar. Next on the list, a couple novels by Phillip Dick.

the autobiography of the famous equation. if you ever thought you were to dumb to understand (i did). read this cracking book and impress those that dont cant or wont. its not as dry as you would think. |
I've been struggling through the Gunslinger...I keep picking it up, then putting it back down. Everyone tells me the series is well worth getting through the first book though, so I'll keep at it.
Also reading The House of Sand and Fog... |
War and Peace - Leo Tolstoy...
God I'm a prat... |
Just finished Brothers In Arms - Margaret Weis and Don Perrin. Really good book if you're a Dragonlance fan.
Even better is The Soulforge, the precursor to Brothers In Arms. |
nice avatar dragon2fire. If I'm not mistaken, that's Spoiler: Raistlin Majere in his laboratory in at the Tower of Palanthas during The Legends series.
Whatever you do, do not, for your own sake, EVER read the 5th Age Books - The Dawning of a New Age The Day of the Tempest The Eve of the Maelstrom These are, in my mind, the worst books ever written. EVER. Best for you to read the Chronicles, then Legends, then Second Generation, the War Of Souls. You can completely leave out the 5th Age Saga, and not miss anything in the main plot line. That's how bad those books are. 900 pages of reading, not one inch of actual plot/timeline movement. |
Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand.
|
An American Son: The Story of George Aratani (The Founder of Mikasa and Kenwood U.S.A.)
|

Im reading Catch 22 now. I love the book but Ive read the first 50 pages 7 times in the past year and keep putting it down. Im determined to get through it this time. |
recently finished up "Great Gatsby"
Now i'm working on "Cold Mountain", "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and the original "Peter Pan" for like the 30th time :D |
I just finished "Make Your Own Damn Movie" by Lloyd Kaufman (president of Troma Films, one of the oldest truly independent movie studios, and director of such "B" classics as Toxic Avenger...etc.) ... A must read for anyone remotely interested in making their own films...or are interested in film/the filmmaking process.....useful and hilarious.
|
2 books atm, Maze of Mormonism and FastFood Nation. It is too bad that I am fickle, as I am about halfway thru both and have no interest to continue. Very good reads, but I would rather do nothing.
|
This Thread !!!
sorry had to be said :) |
Started rereading Stephen King's "Skeleton Crew" for the 5th time.
Still working on "Where are they buried, how did they die?" by Tod Benoit and "Fallen Angels" by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle and Michael Flynn |

That's easily one of the best books I have ever read. The movie is quite good, but I read the book first, and to me, the book is a lot better. I loved every page of it, I damn-near cried at the end, it is way more emotional in the book than with the movie. McMurphy is more of a "caricature" in the book also. I love it. |

Moved on to Wolves of the Calla by Stephen King. After that is Voices in the Fire by Alan Moore.
|
Bones of the Moon By Jonathan Carroll. The reviews on the back are by Pat Conroy, Stanislaw Lem and Stephen King. Talk about an odd amalgamation...
|
I'm getting ready to start reading The Jungle by Upton Sinclair. From what I hear it's pretty graphic and interesting...
|
Hell To Pay, George Pelicanos.
So far, so good. I put down both Dennis Lehane & Carl Hiassen midbook as unreadable. Life is too short for shitty books. |
Just finished "Heretics of Dune." Starting on "Chapterhouse: Dune."
|
Blue Highways by William Least Heat Moon. A more realistic Kerouac type road trip made by a Native American.
|
There are quite a few books that I'm somwhere between the beginning and end of:
"Kavalier & Clay" by Michael Chabon "Islam" by Karen Armstrong "Art & Fear" by Bayles and Orlando "The Future of Freedom" by Fareed Zakaria Also got a Kafka collection from the library but haven't dug into that yet. |
Frankenstein.... Before that, Seabiscuit. highly recommend it.

I've just finished his "1984" which I think is awesome! the rest of my "must read list" is: Animal Farm (just had to add this to the list!) Brave New World Lord of the rings Harry Potter |
Moby Dick! Great Book! I recommend reading it with a group so that you can discuss the philosophy and everything in the book in book talks! Otherwise it might be dull.
|
I just finished Jennifer Government by Max Barry. It's really good--sort of a 1984 for corporate America.

Switched over to
"Live Rich" by Stephen M. Pollen and Mark Levine "Care of the Soul" by Thomas Moore Still making my way through "Skeleton Crew" by Stephen King. |
When I realized I was reading three books at once, I had to resurrect the thread.
The Simulacra by Philip K. Dick America:What Went Wrong by Donald Bartlett and James Steele, a pair of Inquirer reporters and The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks I'm not deep enough into America to feel one way or the other. Simulacra is good but depressing, and Zombie(which is exactly what it's titled) is hilarious and useful. |
My sister just got me Stephen King's Dark Tower Books I-V for my birthday, so I'm starting those.
|
Im reading Helter Skelter by Vincent Bugliosi
|
American Gods by Neil Gaiman, good stuff.
|
The Last Juror - John Grisham
It's pretty good so far. I'm so glad he's back to his law-related books. I like them a lot more than the last two (A Painted House and Bleachers) he wrote. |
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice.
I've read Lestat 3 or 4 times now and obviously love it, but I've disliked everything else I've read by her. So far Interview is pretty good though. I wonder what that means. |
The Koran
We Were Soldiers Once..and Young-L.Gen(Ret)Hal Moore&Joe Gallowway |
"Point Counter Point" by Aldous Huxley
|
The most recent Star Wars book, by Timothy Zahn and
"Refiners Fire" by Mark Helprin |

Recently finished The Bitch in the House, a collection of essays edited by Cathi Hanauer. "26 women tell the truth about sex, solitude, work, motherhood, and marriage." Very interesting stuff--and I saw more of myself in some of the essays than I would've cared to admit. |
Durant's History of Civilization, Volume II: The Life of Greece.
