Milk: 9.5/10
This movie won two Oscars but deserved several more. The story is true to the actual story of the life of Harvey Milk. The director used stock footage from the 70s in several scenes. It worked out so well. The scenes Spoiler: between Sean Penn and James Franco were wonderful.. I have never been a huge fan of James Franco because he usually just plays brooding but he was excellent here.

Seven-Six-Two millimeter... Full Metal Jacket. 10/10
I try to notice something new every time I watch it and this time I did. It was a mistake in a line by Gunny Hartman. The scene where they're doing the obstacle course they're going down the monkey bars and he's yelling and says "It should take no less than 10 seconds to get through this section!" He should have said "it should take no more than 10 seconds.." That is assuming he's actually trying to make them go faster and not slower.. Not that it hurts the film, It just adds a little realism because sometimes words don't come out like you want em too.

Just Finished I Love You, Man. It's a 8/10, maybe better.
Comedies have recently been blessed with some great talent. It's actually surprising to see so many funny people that aren't SNL alumni making really good comedies. Paul Rudd is hilariously awkward in the movie. I cringe as he says something completely incomprehensible and facepalms as he walks out of the room.

Iran: Land of the Free, Home of the Brave - 8/10
A very good and timely thriller based upon the real-life exploits of a top iranian intelligence agent (Trazzakemonarckkoliac) who singlehandedly uncovers and snuffs out an Israeli plot to assassinate the Iranian President. Brilliant performances by Mohammed Guttamenhanamaiymeini and Henza Rentagafaiyeh. |

Spirited Away 3/10
The animation was really cute, but the story line was hard weird to follow, there were a few times where one sentence that was to 'explain' stuff, with no back-up, follow-up, or nothing. it was just weird, we had to pause it more than once to just look at each other and give that 'wtf' face.

I also like Howl's Moving Castle. My favorite from Studio Ghibli is Princess Mononoke. I am so looking forward to Ponyo!

Castle in the Sky is my favorite Miyazaki movie. Spirited Away is a little over the top, though, even for anime, lol.
I agree that it is a fantastically beautiful movie.

so far, I still like Spirited away as my #1 because of the over the top characters and animation. But princess mononoke is definitely a great one! and Howl's moving castle is my gf's favorite. I liked it but there was something a bit odd about it. I dunno.

some parts were just weird, like, how did she know he was the dragon, why she start calling the witch 'grandma' i thought that was for the twin ... yeah, just not the movie for me.

It had several laugh out loud moments, it was decent but the thing that killed it was lots of scenes that just went on too long. The funniest parts were old real home videos of adam sandler back in the day.

District 9 - I was unimpressed. Good visual effects but lacked a consistent way of filming the story. 5/10. Spoiler: I really expected a stronger story line... but the movie reminded me of something my high school English teachers used to say about my essays, "Lots of ideas here, great potential, but no over all focus."
I changed my mind. 10/10. I just watched it again and what I first thought was a haphazard film, was just a lacking of Hollywood's forced conversations. Even good Hollywood movies, I know the conversations feel really staged and fake. This movie, the characters said things that were slightly wrong, or not in the best way. It actually made the movie more interesting to watch the second time around.

Funny People 8/10
This is the movie Adam Sandler's been trying to make for years now. I truly enjoyed this flick. It had the perfect amount of dark comedy, serious moments, and flat out hilarity through most of it. I docked a couple points because the whole scene with the girl dragged out and kind of came off as filler. The Hangover 9/10 This is the movie everybody wishes Dude Where's My Car could've been! This movie was fucking hilarious. I don't think I really stopped laughing at any point. Zack Galiafanakus put the whole movie over the top. Spoiler: That picture of him getting his dick sucked by the housekeeping lady at the end had me laughing all the way home! Jen wants to go see this again tonight, and I could definitely watch it a few more times.

My Neighbour Totoro (Hayao Miyazaki)
adamthewordking August 11th, 19:16 The main thing that struck me about this movie was the lack of what I would call a conventional narrative. I havent seen enough of Anime, or enough of Miyazaki's work to know if it is typical, to tell if this a trait of this genre - but it was a positive to me. The story certainy has a beginning. Two children (the spirited Satsuki and her younger sister Mei) move to the country with their father. The house is slightly spooky and strange, but the children seem delighted with this rather than upset. Both children are spirited, obedient, and bright.... and we soon learn that their mother is currently confined to a nearby hospital with an unknown condition. And the story develops on, the Totoro (a kind of elemental or spirit which seems to both be bound to and to embody the local forest) are introduced, a triplet of varying sizes - a baby, a child, and the giant - who seems to spend much of his time asleep and can only communicate by his smile, or his huge roar which summons the forest wind. A crisis point, of sorts, is reached, and then resolved - but at no point does the story feel dynamic or forced along a path - we merely follow a string of related scenes telling the story of the summer. The animation is tidy, and at times beautiful. The Totoro character is cute, and the girls story - their struggle to come to terms with their mothers illness and their contrasting wonder at the magical world of the Totoro - is engaging. Only one scene did I find both disturbing and out of place. Perhaps it says something about cultural differences - but near the start of th movie we see (although self consciously not explicitly) the girls (aged 4 and about 11) bathing naked with their absent minded professor father. Perhaps the director means to say something about innocence, about childhood - but it struck me as wierd, unsettling and gratutitous. Certainly no Western cartoon would feature such a scene - maybe the Director would say that this says more about the West and our manical fear of paedophilia or its signs: but all the same this part of the movie both said nothing to me and seemed to exist solely for the sake of showing the children almost naked. It seemed totally out of place with the magical, charming, tone of the film... it didnt spoil the movie for me - but as I said I found it out of place. All in all, this was a well made animation, and I would check out more of this director's work. 3/5 !!!

District 9 - 9, only because I fear a sequel
I was pleased with the depth that was taken with the characters of the aliens. That was impressive. Initially, what I could only see as aliens became, further into the film, individuals with unique charateristics and personalities. The fact that they were aliens came second to who they were and what they were doing. Highly successful.

Great thread. I have just resumed my movie watching.
Angels and Demons : Quite predictable, if you have read Dan Brown's earlier works or seen Da Vinci Code. 2.5/5 The Hangover: I have seen better slapstick stuff. This one was somehow a sad attempt at it. 2/5 Also saw Occupation 101 but that's more of a documentary. |

I didn't know what to expect, but I definitely didn't expect what I got from this movie. The freshest and most brilliant handle of a classic theme; it hits you without even trying. My girls wanted to see it and I thought they might have been bored, but they loved it, too. Make sure any kids are over 16ish. Spoiler: Was I the only one who cried right before the end?

What can I say? It's something I can relate to it and it's fucking hilarious. It's really just another stupid humor movie from people who are best known for it, but this one really went over the top and succeeded where the others did not.

GI Joe: On the plus- hella cool shit blowing up, scorching hot chicks, 80s retro sentimental happy. On the minus- With the exception of Christopher Eccleston, none of the actors could act a damn-- or at least they weren't acting worth a damn, plot was nearly nonexistent, dialogue was arguably the worst I have ever heard. Not a total waste of 2 hours if you're a guy who played with GI Joes and/or watched the cartoon in the 80s, but not worth seeing twice. 4/10
Julie & Julia: This was a great little movie. Meryl Streep absulotely inhabited Julia Child...it was incredible to watch, she stole every scene she was in. And I am always happy to watch Amy Adams. She's a great actress, always puts in a good working day in her roles, and she's loveable as hell (with one of the world's perkiest asses). The rest of the cast was great also, and Nora Ephron did a surprisingly deft turn both at the screenplay and in the director's chair-- I have liked some of her other films, but in the past I've thought her a little heavy-handed as a director, and this was done with a good, sure touch. But overall, the real star of the film was the food: it looked great, it was treated well, and man, did I come away wanting to cook! 9/10

District 9 - I changed my mind. 10/10. I just watched it again and really thought the movie was well done. Originally, I felt the movie was haphazardly put together, but then I realized it was the conversations between characters that was throwing me. For so long, I have criticized main stream Hollywood movies for having painfully forced conversations. Even good movies, the interactions between characters feel unnaturally perfect, obviously staged. This movie lacked that, and in effect, upon second viewing, made the characters, even the aliens, feel more real.

I really didn't like the early part of the film. It felt like Murray from Flight of the Conchords doing an episode of Cops. The interviews just seemed odd and out of place. The plot was really good though as was the action. Overall, I enjoyed it.

Time Traveler's Wife, the book, is supposed to be excellent (I've heard nothing but good things about it from a number of people, male and female). Time Traveler's Wife, the movie, is supposed to be terrible, and the people I know who read the book all got bad impressions based on the trailer. They say that an excellent book looks to have been watered down into a generic love movie with a time travel aspect thrown in. The written reviews have said much the same thing. Anyway, just saying if you like the concept you should read the book. I haven't yet, nor have I seen the movie, just figured I'd share what I've heard in discussions with others.
Anyway: Moon: 8.5/10 District 9: 8.5/10 The two best sci-fi movies of the year, hands-down. Done properly, I wouldn't actually mind a District 9 sequel (and Moon was made with it in mind to be the first of a trilogy). I fear a "real" budget could corrupt either film sequel though. What I'd really like to see is a well-made District 9 video game. If you've seen it, you know how awesome that could be. Holy fuck.

Very good movie. All aspects were well done, I just didn't like how Spoiler: they dragged out the main character's redemption. He didn't have to be a sniveling coward as long as he was. I felt this aspect was simply to make the movie a bit longer, and nothing else.. Other than that, an excellent film.
