ok, well I do recommend it, but with reservations. if you read some IMDB reviews, they tell the story with full spoilers, I don't want to go there. but if you are into way off the deep end like...Thundercrack ? or early John Waters...? small warning for moments of XXX. truly an amazing movie but most people I think would walk out in the first 15 minuets or so. it was so foul I don't think I could even talk about it to most people I know.

paranormal activity - 9/10. Outstanding horror movie. Very claustrophobic...the tension is unbearable. Scared me $hitless.

Paper Heart 7/10
It's a sort of fiction/nonfiction docu-story of a girl trying to find out about love. She, Charlyne Yi, is very endearing but the film also features Michael Cera, who I have never really liked, and the scenes with the two together felt very awkward. The interviews with real people were very interesting.

Stargate 7/10
In the middle of Paper Heart I suddenly got the urge to watch Stargate which I saw as a child in the cinema and once since then on TV but not for years. I definately recommend it for a first-time watch but I'd suggest to anyone tempted to see it again, fifteen years on, they should re-watch director Roland Emmerich's Independence Day instead. That really does hold up to repeat viewings thanks to its more charismatic leads, and its greater scope. I shall enjoy watching it again before going to see 2012, also Emmerich, on Imax. (Incidentally Stargate does feature some unusually impressive production design.)

I haven't been scared in the cinema for ages. Looking forward to seeing, and hopefully being scared by, both this and The Fourth Kind.

People in the theater were screaming and jumping out of their seats. Yup, Fourth Kind looked good in previews. Have fun if you go!

In Her Shoes 5/10
I have quite a high tolerance of a lot of female-targeted romcoms - I actually like a few and have watched them multiple times - but this one's nasty. It's really, really boring mostly because the characters are neither identifiable or likeable. Two sisters - Toni Colette and Cameron Diaz, both very shallow, vapid women - fall out then make friends again with the help of their equally unpleasant long-lost grandmother (Shirley MacLaine). Half of this film is set in a retirement community - just as tedious as you'd imagine - and the third act drags worse than anything I've seen ages. If a 'comedy' film lasts for more than two hours (as this one does) it better have a damn good reason to - this one doesn't. The extra time's used to explain all sorts of secrets and cover-ups that happened in the history of the awful family. The whole story is so trite and uninteresting that it seems absurd to expect an audience to sit through any more than about an hour and twenty minutes. This lasts for TWO HOURS and ten minutes. In that time I could have watched something really good, like the Lion King, AND and had something to eat.

Office Space 7/10
This is 10 years old now but didn't seem as dated as I was expecting. Pretty broad, easy-going comedy which I can neither find serious fault with nor get really enthusiastic about.

The Secret life of Bee's 8/10

Very good. Nice story, goodcharacters, I love Queen Latifa and Dakota Fanning, and I'm really starting to like Jennifer Hudson. Read the book before hand and fell in love with it, and I wasn't actually dissapointed with the movie. It incorporated the things I wasn't sure if it would and I thought they did very well.

The Hangover 10/10

Every movie lately claims to be the "Funniest movie of the year". Superbad was stupid, so were most of the others. But, I actually thought The Hangover WAS the funniest movie of the year. I laughed my ass right off, many many times. Worth a watch for anyone who drinks, likes stupid comedy, like comedy, doesnt want a big romance story, just wants to laugh. Great plot, good solid characters, very funny.

Tekkonkinkreet: Black & White - 8.5/10 - great story line and characters ... left a few loose ends, but nothing you wouldn't have fun tying up yourself.

oliver9184 11-17-2009 02:59 PM

2012 went on for a bit too long and its ending disappointed me dreadfully but was spectacular, funny and had the appeal of some pretty respectable actors saying some of the most clanging lines and overearnest speeches you could ever hope to hear.... 6/10 (a full review here 2012 (2009/I) - IMDb user comments)

Wedding Crashers I didn't see from the very beginning but didn't feel I needed to. A one-note performance by the eternally dislikeable Vince Vaughn and another by Owen Wilson - whose charming nature I can get along with a whole lot easier than I can Vaughn's sarcasm. This is really basic, lowbrow, dull-minded stuff along the lines of Meet the Parents. I watched it mostly because of Rachel McAdams; she's wasted here. The best thing about it was her evil fiance, Bradley Cooper (more recently seen in The Hangover).... 5/10

Harry Brown is a new British crime/vigilante thriller starring Michael Caine. I went to watch it because of him, and because it had got a surprisingly high 8.1/10 rating on the IMDB. It isn't that good - the story is terribly hackneyed and feels like a hundred old TV dramas - but it does have some fairly tense moments and lurid thrills. Aside from the film's merits or failings, however, it's a shame Sir Michael seems to buy into the bullshit and it's ALWAYS a shame, in my opinion, to have a film endorsing vigilatism as wholeheartedly as this one does.... 6/10

[rec] - 8/10. Same movie as Quarantine, the American horror movie based on this movie. Same plot, same sets, same screenplay, same everything except made in Spain and with a hotter leading chick (chica muy caliente!). Still a great movie...I liked Quarantine better except for the last scene which was awesome in both movies, maybe better in this one. Very, very freaky. Points taken away for overexuberant and tacky musical soundtrack at the end credits...messed up the scary ending afterglow.

I saw this not so long ago, agreed with pretty much everything you said especially the hotness of the lead. I thought the opening was really really good and the rest didn't quite live up to that somehow. Felt a little formulaic. Anyway, if you haven't seen The Descent check that out. It's scary in a similar way but slightly more professional and accomplished.

Brewster's Millions apparently there are at least six film versions of this; the one I saw is the one most people will know, from 1985 starring Richard Pryor. He was an excellent comedian but not a particularly good actor, and while this film mostly requires him to be the former his lack of skill in the latter sometimes shows - though there aren't many scenes that demand heavy acting. John Candy, supporting, is even less convincing. This film is from a time when greed was good and that really shows. This and Trading Places (1983) are the most greedy films I can think of. The moral of the story (i.e. greed is NOT good) is perverted by the very conspicuous - not to mention distasteful - spending on display. I think it's expected and intended that you watch this film and think "I want to be rich and spend money like Brewster"... 6/10

oliver9184 11-22-2009 03:24 PM

The Hot Chick was the worst film I have seen in a long time. I wasn't expecting to like it (watched it purely because of Rachel McAdams) but it was searingly bad - one of those bottom-feeding films (like Scary Movie and so on) that are made exclusively for quite cretinous, unimaginative people. Rachel's presence is the only reason it even gets one point. 1/10

Antichrist - William Dafoe , Charlotte Gainsbourg
yeesh. intense. good acting, fully committed to the roles. can't say much w/o spoilage. hard to rate. some beautifully photographed scenes but some very harsh imagery to say the least. I'd recommend it but not for the vanilla crowd at all.

Anti-christ

Wanted to like it. Was very nice to look at, and had some seriously disturbing stuff in it. But, in the end, was a wee bit too experimental and made no sense. I like my movies to at least make a subtle effort to be comprehensible.

Even the director hasn't been able to answer questions such as: "wtf are you trying to say here?"

I feel that the acting was very good. But still, thumbs down.

boink 11-24-2009 09:43 PM

well, I'd say it made sense to me, but I know what your saying so I guess I'll say I made sense of it.
I don't want to get into it for the sake of spoilage.
I can say, I take it as a story of psychosis. so when it gets confusing or weird, as a story it makes sense in that framework. I don't see it as a psychotronic or
superfreakoutsploitation thing, like a movie on the "something weird " label.

oliver9184 11-26-2009 05:26 PM

Where to begin with Antichrist? I had listened to quite a lot of the hype before watching this and been familiar with (and really liked) most of Lars Von Trier's previous films so I sort of half knew what to expect but I was still squirming and cringing as much as anyone. Like docbungle I wanted to like it more than I did and think I would on a second viewing. Hopefully, at its core this film is a rather a marvelous and delicious joke in the grand guignol style which at first only the director understands but which the audience is, eventually, gradually, let in on.

I think it will be higher on second viewing but for now Antichrist 8/10

Swordfish 3/10

Space Cowboys 7/10

Children of Men 9/10 - this would be a 10 were it not for some slightly clunkly writing and acting (by that dreadlocked middle-aged woman) that I only noticed 5th or 6th time around. Nitpicking aside this would be a pretty astonishing film even without the showstopping minutes-long steadicam shots, but those shots are what you can rewind over and over and over again, watching it thinking, how the fuck did they do THAT?

boink 11-27-2009 01:06 AM

boy I'm not shure if I'll be watching Anti-Christ again. I liked it but once is enough... I may just hunt up Lars Von Trier's career on IMDB and see what else he's made.

Willie Dynamite 4/10 an old 70's blacksploitation flick...ehh... Willie is No.2 Pimp but he wants to be No.1...

Thriller, a Cruel Picture 8/10 supposedly inspired Tarentino to do Kill Bill...I can see that. it pretty much lived up to it's rep from what I read. not really shure why I wanted to watch it, it's a foul story, the low budget 70's production certainly isn't eyecandy.

The Twilight Samurai 9/10
A Japanese film about a petty samurai raising his two daughters and caring for his senile mother. It was very compelling.

Night at The Museum, the first one. Finally saw it and I was surprised. Tt was a fun, clever and good family film. Highly recommend - if you have people of all ages hanging around and needing a "good, safe" choice.

Yep, extremely vanilla. 7/10.

sapiens 11-27-2009 01:17 PM

The Fantastic Mr. Fox 8/10
My wife and I took our kids to the movie yesterday. I enjoyed it. The stop-motion animation was striking. Some of the dialogue seemed a bit too clever (it IS a Wes Anderson film). There were a few loose ends as well, but overall it was very entertaining. Don' take your kids if they can't handle villains smoking cigarettes and squabs/rats dying gruesome deaths.

Haven't seen it but I'm glad to hear this happens. However it's been AGES since we saw the goodies smoking in a childrens film. When Toy Story 3 comes out I'd really like it if ALL the characters are constantly smoking and there's really heavy product placement by real cigarette brands throughout. Like all the toys had to make a fort out of cartons of Marlboro or something.

New Moon: 8/10

Before watching the latest installment in the Twilight saga, I was concerned with three things in the movie that were mentioned in the book. The first would be the actor playing Jacob. Since in the book he increases in height and physique due to his rising status in the werewolf pack, the actor would have to put on some serious muscle before this movie was released. And we all know from the first movie, the actor was not exactly the strongest person shown on screen. The second issue would be the fact that in the book New Moon, nothing interesting or exciting happens for 200 pages after Edward breaks up with Bella. The third issue is the special effects of the werewolves. From the preview, the special effects looked rather weak, but the previews can hide the truth.

After viewing the film, the issues I raised in the previous paragraph were answered. According to the November issue of Men’s Health, the actor playing Jacob gained 40lbs of muscle to look the part of a werewolf and it shows on screen since he is shirtless for most of the movie.

The 200 pages in the book where nothing happens is diminished to 1 minute on screen where Bella sits in a chair for three months while the camera moves around her and the window showing the changes in the seasons.

And I was impressed with the special effects of the werewolves since it doesn’t look tacky because they look like massive wolves on steroids.

Now that the issues are out of the way, I must admit I was impressed with the movie because it followed the story quite well and I enjoyed the special effects of how the vampires fought against each other in the Volturi banquet room. The Volturi fight scene between Edward and Felix was intense and I liked how they showed the injury on Edward’s face is similar to the damage of the marble floors.

oliver9184 11-29-2009 06:44 AM

Bunny and the Bull 5/10 This is an extremely laboured, tedious and self-conscious British comedy made on the cheap. The jokes come at you like massive juggernauts stuck in first gear and blaring their horns. The best thing about it is the sets, but as a wise man once said "great sets do not a good film make".

Thanks, UK Lottery Fund, for financing yet ANOTHER crap film that hardly anyone will see and that has no chance of making any money.

Ninja Assassin - 10/10

I *just* got home from the movies I have to say to I'm still gushing like a geeky fan boy. It's like a ninja wet dream come true for me.

Leaving Las Vegas 9/10 YEAH!!!! Watch Nic Cage furiously smash up the casino - CRASH! POW! BAM!!! - pour liqueur all over Elizabeth Shue's lovely body and lick it off her - HUBBA HUBBA!!!! PHHWWWOAAAR!! - and otherwise act his ass off, excellently showing what the super-strength DTs are like and wholly deserving the oscar he got for this film.

The Gauntlet 7/10 is a 1977 Clint Eastwood action vehicle. His vehicle, meanwhile, is a bus which he reinforces with iron because he has to get a witness from Las Vegas to Phoenix City Hall and every single cop in the city is trying to shoot him.

Boondock Saints 2: All Saints Day

1st movie spoiler alert!
Spoiler: 2 guys(brothers) see their bar taken over by the russian mob so they kick the shit out of the russians in a drunk bar fight. Next day, mafia guys try to kill the 2 guys but they survive and manage to kill the russians. Next day, they decide to start killing all the mafia guys when they receive a message on the stolen pager. After they kill everyone in a spectacular scene, they decide along with another friend to kill bad guys. Story ends with them reuniting with their dad, loosing their friend(dies) and killing the HEAD of the italian mafia in a crowded court room.

Wow was this a great movie!!

This has a ton more story than the 1st movie. A great cast which is so much better if you've seen the 1st movie. And like the 1st movie, this is still up for a sequel to end the series maybe? Even some old characters come back. the ones you wouldn't expect. overall, if you enjoy B movies or saw the classic original and liked it, you will love this one. Action and story make this one.

Rating of 9/10

Funny People 7/10

Overall a pretty good film. Well written with a pretty unique plot, it does however run a little long and I found the middle to drag on a bit before reaching its climax otherwise I might have bumped it up to an 8 or 9.

One aspect of this movie I loved was the portrayal of the characters as both good and bad. You don't feel guided or pushed to a conclusion based on the writers need to garner sympathy or disgust for certain characters as a device to draw you to a specific conclusion. It made the characters feel human and gave the plot a very raw feel.

Over all not a bad movie.

Terminator Resurrection...well, if T2 is a 10/10 I'll give T4 a 10/10 too. overall I sorta like the Terminator series I'd give them a 8/10 agenst movies in general. so I spose that leaves T4 with an 8/10 just as a movie unto it'self. if that makes any sence. I don't think Bale gave it anything special, but he didn't wreck it either. I liked the hybrid T and the chick best.

I think T1 is 8/10, T2 is 10/10, T3 is maybe 7/10 and T4 is 5/10. Schwarzenegger was key to this franchise and Bale has none of his charm and heavy grace. He could have been John Connor is T3 perhaps, but he's too sour to be at the centre of the film.

Get Smart 7/10 I was drinking heavily for a long time before this, and during it so I can't remember it very well. I remember laughing a lot but probably wouldn't have sober. But Bill Murray mournfully disguised as a tree would be funny whatever.

Ten Canoes 7.5/10 I wanna give it a higher rating. :)

I DVRed this this a few weeks ago because it had David Gumpilil doing the narration who I remember being in one of my other favorite Aussie films Walkabout. It's a cool little story about a brother's jealousy and lust for his older brother's youngest wife and since it takes place before western contact with the indigenous tribes of Australia, it consists of an entirely Aborigine cast.

One thing about it which bugged me is that the subtitles in the black and white scenes were extremely hard to read sometimes. I missed a lot of the talking done by the storyteller's tribe due to white subtitles on white screen.
