Do the right thing -
Very solid movie. Shows some great dialogue [especially between the few guys sitting on the sidewalk in the lawn chairs drinking]; I enjoyed the character (the old 'drunk' man, I forget his name) in particular - he was witty and I was sympathetic to him. The ending did seem a bit 'preachy' per se, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. 8.5/10 Borat - Maybe I had too high expectations or too the film too seriously, but I felt it wasn't comedic. A couple humorous moments were there with the brown bear and the car dealership, but that was about it. 4/10 cya, will. |
Lucky Number Slevin -
7 / 7 The way this movie turned out vs how the previews showed it to be was beyond satisfying. I love a movie that just throws a huge twist in the end and have it all still make perfect sense! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Borat - 5 / 10 It made me laugh sure, but so does channel 61 and its free. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Casino Royale - 8.5 / 10 So the last few bond movies flat out sucked, I went into this one expected a half-decent Roger Moore style quality bond. But damn was I shocked when the movie got rolling. Daniel Craig is the new Bond ladies & gents, no doubt about it. No longer does our friend Mr.Bond rely on his savy voice and extreme gadgets. Bond finally has some style again. |
V for Vendetta 11/10
I finally got around to watching V for Vendetta I had always wanted to see it but never did. Now I wish I had been able to see it in the theater. I thought it was very well done. well thought out well acted the cast seemed perfect. I don't own many movies, I don't even rent movies often but I think I may need to go buy this one. |
watched saw3 the other day and it wasn't as good as the first two. a few new good twists though. many "ah-ha" moments and some "oh my goodness" moments. i'd give it a 7 for plot and story line and new twists.

So we have this big new fancy HDTV and HD on demand. I noticed FARGO was available for free, so I watched it again last night. It had been a few years since I'd seen that move and HOLY CRAP! This is without a doubt one of the top 5 movies of all time.
Much like many "classics" from way back when, this film has NO special effects, NO explosions, NO hunky leading man or hottie showboating her cleavage, NO CGI, NO cast of thousands.... none of that stuff that typically gets the "wow factor" these days. This film has ACTORS, playing roles to perfection. It has DIALOGUE that keeps you begging for more. There is not one second that was put in that didn't belong. The mucical score is absolutely haunting, I literally would get chills when that violin theme would play. I simply cannot say enough good things about this movie. The Coen brothers just rule, and this is their crown jewel. I can't beleive it didn't win the Oscar for best picture. If you havent seen Fargo, stop what you are doing, RIGHT NOW, and go rent it. If it has been a while since you have seen it, go watch it again tonight. So, yeah... 10 out of 10 for me, duh. |
o k ... i haven't posted in a couple of weeks so heres the latest movies i've seen. the bad then the good.
pirates of the caribbean 2: Dead man's Chest eh. i saw the 1st one and it was good with a good ending. the sequel however just seemed long and it felt like a bad sequel. It wasn't as funny as the 1st one, the story was stretched over 2hrs30min, and the acting could have been better. i didn't feel for any character so if they died i couldn't care. 5/10 Superman returns I had the same reaction as many ppl from the "i hated the new superman" thread. it was allright but i would never watch it again. this wasn't as good as i expected. i thought for sure there would be some kickass action and something to stop superman apart from the usual kryptonite. the acting was just tv quality. rent it if you must but don't expect a masterpiece. 6/10 The Crow i heard only good things from this movie from a few friends and reviews and after finishing it, i was SUPER dissappointed! wow. this felt like an amateur movie! i guess i'm just not goth or emo enough to get this movie... 4/10 Little Miss Sunshine This was a suprisingly good movie! i checked it out this weekend - it was well done and the acting was great. felt nice to see a movie without special effects or anything CG. and it's also a bit funny. i recommend it for ppl who like good acting in the drama/comedy genre. although the ending was a bit weak... i wished there was more. 8.5/10 The Lake House I saw this with my gf and i think i liked it more than she did! haha. for once, the romantic movie does something i like. "time travel". if you've seen the previews you'll know what i'm talking about. although some parts could have been better, like the acting and some scenes, it was still a good chickflick with a good story line. 8/10 |

I know for sure that The Departed was based on an Asian move (Infernal Affairs), and I want to see it before I see Scorcese's remake. |
The Break Up - 3/10
Utterly dull. I am tired of seeing Vince Vaughn play himself. Amelie - 10/10 Absolutely great. Funny and clever, with some beautiful visuals. biznatch, The Lake House is a remake of Il Mare, a Korean film. |

it doesn't get funnier than the preview. |
The Departed - 8/10
Leonardo DiCaprio is probably the best actor in the industry. Matt Damon is probably the worst. Jack Nicholson gets away with just acting the same way in every role he plays. Marky Mark and Alec Baldwin are the best characters (aside from Leo) and they get some of the best lines. The movie itself is satisfying. No excuses given... it shows you exactly what you expect out of it. Then it gives you a little more than you bargained for. |
Click
predictable!! wow. This was a bad movie! all the jokes revolve around farts, hitting or getting hit and a few sex jokes. lame. I think Adam Sandler should stop making movies right now because they're always the same. This COULD have been a good story but it fell for the old predictable lame " falls asleep, wake up and do awesome story and then wake up again and notice it was all a dream and now my life is changed" story. it's a good example of what bad writers do when they can't find an ending. "oh i know! let's make him wake up and it was all a dream! that will be a good twist!" bleh. sorry for the spoilers but i don't want you wasting your money on this. 3/10 just because the remote was cool and Kate Beckinsale was in it. |
I had a strong suspicion just from the previews that Click would suck, and now I know I definitely don't want to see it. Still some people I know liked it, but I don't think it's my kind of movie.
|
On the subject of Adam Sandler: I don't write him off completely because of Punch-Drunk Love and (to a lesser extent) Spanglish. I think the bottom line is he can be in intelligent movies but he's always going to make his money doing sophmoric garbage and that's fine.

I saw Clerks II.
I liked it a lot, very funny movie. Everyone who's a fan of that series of movies (with Jay and Silent Bob) should see it. 9/10 |

Also, that's funny that you mention that about the jokes because I thought the best part of the movie was Terry Crews singing Working for the Weekend. I mean, the man has an amazing voice. I was personally pissed when Sandler muted him. Strangely enough, that wasn't a fart, hitting or getting hit, or sex joke. |

Just finished watching Wal-Mart The High Cost of Low Price. It's a documentary so it is biased, but man, if 10% of what they say is true, Wal-Mart is evil. It was very shocking to see that some of the richest people in America have the most workers below the poverty level. Definitely worthy of the Netflix queue.

Night At The Museum
Wholesome family film with tons of laughs and a moral message. 7/10 |
Jet Li - Fearless
10/10 (if you're a fan of kung fu movies) - the best Jet Li film ever (and his last). It's the old Wushu style kung-fu movie. Every fight is fabulously choreographed. The story is more deeply philosophic about a spiritual journey acted and directed with immense sincerity. By "sincerity" I mean that the story isn't just an excuse to string together various fights - it's Jet Li's personal statement about martial arts, violence and making peace. Never has Jet Li played such a flawed, sympathetic and ultimately heroic character. I won't spoil it for you but there were moments in the film that made me cry. This film has it all .... if you're a fan of kung fu movies. If you're not a fan of kung fu movies it'd probably be more like 7/10 - because the cinematography is on par with Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and it's just a good story. But Fearless has a little more depth. |
^^ Is that REALLY going to be Jet Li's last kung fu movie? Or is that just hype? I have always wanted to see a live-action Dragonball-Z movie made, and Jet Li is taylor made to play Vegeta.

I'd like to see Christopher Walken in the role of Vegeta. He'd bring an odd depth to the character. I mean all of his superpowered movements would be CGI anyway, so why not go all out?

the hired hand
what a beautiful film: peter fonda starred and directed this after easy rider. the cinematography, the acting and (especially) the music are all lovely--very sad, quite slow, just lovely. if you can get ahold of the dvd, watch this film. |
The Pursuit Of Happyness: 9/10
I loved this movie. I didn't know about watching a Will Smith flick, but he really did a good job. I can't say enough about his kid either, he was amazing. Great acting all around, a good story that made my eyes well up a couple times, a couple funny parts thrown in there... all around, just a really good movie. |
Thank You For Smoking was in my opinion just a fair movie. I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I thought the idea was brilliant, and the script was pretty good, but there was just something kind of predictable about it. I guess I didn't like the 'grinch has his heart grow three sizes by the end of the movie' thing. I mean, I knew it made sense, but I guess I was looking for something a little less transparent.
Beyond The Gates Of Splendor is a documentary that I challenge all TFP'ers to pick up, if they happen to see it on their store shelf. It's about 5 missionary couples who go to Ecuador in the 1950's into the jungles to a tribal community and how they interact with them. It is a great film, not preachy at all, with a great message. |

I finally got around to watching Grease for the first time ever.
9/10 I was amazed at how fun the movie was! I guess I should listen to people more often? |

LOL, the summer this movie came to our little town my friends and I saw it no less than 8 times in our little pissant local theater. I don't think I've seen it since then. |
The Constant Gardener - 7/10
Enjoyable, affecting film. I really ought to give Le Carre a shot; I always thought his novels were fluff. |
"The Holiday" 9/10
It is a little slow in the beginning but totally hits its stride towards the end. I keep telling myself that I don't need to see it in the theater again, that I can wait till it comes out on DVD or to the ghetto theater at the very least. |
HoodWinked 9/10
I had forgotten I wanted to watch this one until it was referred to in another thread. So I promptly acquired a copy for my viewing pleasure. I loved the characters and the story line, it is a great movie for the entire family. the writers did an excellent job of tieing several plot lines together and making them overlap. The animation was not the best, but in no way did it detract from the overall experience. Watch it today! |

Kill Bill Volume 1 - 9.5/10
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen (I've seen it before and own both volumes on DVD. I just felt like watching it the other day.). The fight scenes are outstanding, and I love the anime portion. |
Movies I've seen lately...
Concert for Bangladesh - 10/10 Maybe not the best concert film ever, but certainly one of the most significant concerts ever put down on film. The line-up for the band: George Harrison Leon Russell Eric Clapton Billy Preston Ringo Starr Klaus Voormann Jim Keltner Jesse Ed Davis and many others Opening set by Ravi Shankar & Ali Akbar Khan And Bob Dylan does a remarkable walk-on set. One of his best performances on film that I've seen. This is a great concert film if you're into the good music of that era. I intend to buy myself a copy. V for Vendetta 8.5/10 I bought this film for my daughter for Christmas because she is a huge Hugo Weaving fan. Neither of had seen it but it was only a small disappointment that you never see his face in the film, lol. I found it to be enjoyable with, of course, an eerily relevant plot. The choice of John Hurt to play the role of the fear-mongering chancellor in this rather Orwellian drama I thought was a neat little *nudge, nudge, wink, wink* for the fans of the film version of Orwell's 1984. The movie has some flaws - stilted moments, plot holes, etc. - but overall we both liked it very much. Okay, last night.... The Descent 10/10 I LOVED this film. But I NEVER want to see it again, lol. Probably the best horror movie to be made in...I don't know, I can't even say. I can't remember the last time I saw a horror film that used suspense (excruciating suspense) and DARKNESS to better effect. Normally I would find all of the jarring cuts of the action scenes to be annoying, but they worked perfectly in this case to convey the sense of disorientation you would have in that situation - Spoiler: being in a dark, enclosed place under attack by unknown, slimy white, blind, wall-crawling, cannibalistic humanoids. *shiver* It seems to take a long time for the action to build up, but when it does it is non-stop - just be patient and soak up the atmosphere. I also commend this film for its sincere attempt to establish solid characterizations with conflicts and motives - unusually so for a horror flick - but at the same time, not being overbearing with it. And finally, the performances by the all female cast are rock solid and if you're a woman you might take more than a little satisfaction from watching these chicks throw down with the "bad guys" and kick a good deal of Spoiler: slimy white ass :p - there is no cowering in the corner waiting for a guy to come and save them. It was kind of exhilarating. :) I could go on more about this flick, but that's probably enough, lol. I recommend it highly for those who like horror films and are not squeamish - it is quite gory. The version I got from Netflix is an unrated version so I'm not sure how it compares to the theatrical version. Also, from what I understand, the ending in this version is different from the US theatrical release. |
Kinsey - 8/10
Being the sexuality enthusiast that I am, there's no way I could have approached this movie with anything less than a deep, vested interest. So, I watched what I would consider to be a boring movie to anyone else with unwavering attention. The movie illustrates the worth of education. Anyone who knows what the TFP is about will also appreciate it. I was deeply satisfied with how the importance of Kinsey's work came across and wasn't too bothered with the flimsy extra relationships that the movie depicts. The movie gets points for boobs, vaginas and penises. I'd just like to say that the only way we are going to advance as a society is to discuss things openly. This movie is about a man who saw that and fought for that in a time when nobody wanted to acknowledge anything. Times are still much like that, but we have made strides and I think we owe a lot of that to Dr Kinsey. The TFP is here to continue that progress. |
Eragon 7/10
The cgi was superb, the acting was good and it was a cute movie over all. I havent read the book though so perhaps I am not as biased as most. |
Last night I watched "The Outlaw Josey Wales".
It's an old Spaghetti Western type with Clint Eastwood. Before last week I probably haven't watched 8-10 westerns in my life. Don't ask me why I've been on a kick this week, but I've watched 3-4 back to back. :o It was fairly decent, I'd say 6 or 7 out of 10. :) |

Casino Royale: 3/10
The explosions and first ten minutes were cool, and one of the ladies was pretty hot. Otherwise, the film was boring and predictable. I'll never go see another Bond flick again. |
