Jackass 2.
These boys are nuts! |
Saw and SawII
Much better than the cheap slasher films I thought them to be! I shouldnt judge a movie by its title it seems! |
The Departed
Usually I don't like anything by Martin Scorsese or anything very violent but this movie was different in its portrayal of things. The music was great. I agree that the plot was a little muddled but it gets sorted out by the end. 9/10 |
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Don't know where to begin...let's just suffice it to say that I was disappointed by this movie. 5/10. And the only reason it's not a 3 is because of Johnny Depp's sometimes charming impressions of William H. Macy & Francis McDormand in Fargo. Not that they were particularly fitting for the role, but it was somewhat accomplished mimicry regardless. And the little dude stole the show.
Also, I just realized something about this movie, I never thought I'd see a version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where the build-up to the chocolate factory tour would be more entertaining than the spectacle of entering Willie Wonka's world. But I saw it. |
Saw III.... 9/10
Never in my life have I ever had to close my eyes and turn my face away in a movie! If you like movies as realistic as they come this is for you! Ties up any and all lose ends. Want to know what eventually became of the cop at the end of SawII? Gotta watch III. Havent watched I or II yet? Dont watch III. This series is so jam packed with twists and turns if you dont watch them in order you will be hopelessly lost! III refers back to I and II. Watch them out of order and youll spoil the fun! Happy horror movie. :D |
party girl.
parker posey in fabulous outfits wandering through a film that is pretty funny in a geeky way until they decided that it had to end, but hey, who cares, it's 3/4 of a fine movie for watching on one of those night where the remote for the dvd player is the outer limit of the complexity you want to deal with. |
The Bridge ***
A documentary that captures on film 24 suicides committed by people jumping from the Golden Gate Bridge in 2004, along with one survivor. It's interspersed with talking heads discussing suicide. I'm not sure at this point how good it actually is. It's compelling because it deals with such a profound subject, and moving because you're literally watching the last seconds of someone's life. Those two elements ramp up the emotions so much that it becomes difficult to really evaluate things. Still, for emotional power alone, it's quite effective. |
Saw 3
wow was this movie not like the other ones. i'll admit right now that the story was good and FUCKing twisted BUT the movie was horrible. i had to close my eyes because there was too much FLASHES. every scene was a flash. not flashback. but a flash. kinda like watching a preview. and the end was jsut retarded. they had flashbacks of what happened 2min before. "hey rememeber when i shot that bitch?" "ya. that was 2min ago. urgh. you have a bad memory dude!" so i dont recommend it at all. sorry. 4/10 |
The Prestige 6/10
I don't know. The acting was fine, and some of the stuff was interesting, but the movie felt very slow at points. I can't really recommend it. |
I realize I am pitifully behind on my movie watching and reviewing films that most of ya'll saw long ago, but I don't get out much (single mom) and I just recently re-joined Netflix so I have a lot of catching up to do.
Downfall 9/10 - My 17 y.o. daughter insisted I watch this film with her. She is fascinated with all things German and particularly with Nazi Germany. Not in a positive way, of course. It is more of the fascination of disbelief, I think. She is horrified by the Holocaust...but I am digressing. I loved the film. I found it very enlightening as to the "inner sanctum" figures of the Third Reich. A subject I've not been well-educated on. But I found the performances to be both chilling and unexpectedly sympathetic. Not that I sympathize with their cause, just that they were shown to be just what they were, humans with frailties and flaws and a quite remarkably ignoble gullibility. I have not witnessed on film a more chilling and pathetic example of this than Frau Goebbles in a very long time. All in all I found the film to be very engaging, exceptionally performed, and photographed with a skillful modesty considering the bunker set most of the film takes place on - in fact, I was impressed with the unassuming tone of the film overall. I could go on and on about the thoughts and feelings this film left me with, but primarily I came away with this impression: In the end, how feebly and pathetically fall even the most breathtakingly ignominious of humankind's follies. I highly recommend this film to anyone and everyone except, of course, the very young - there are a few gruesome scenes. |
Cabin Fever 2/10
Neither Pan nor I saw the point of this flick... Plenty of blood to be had though which is why it earned the 2. |
Silent Hill
Much to my dismay, my daughters love this video game and LOVED this movie. I finally sat down and watched it with them the other night. It sucked. It sucked so bad that my ears are still popping. This ambitious piece of shit proves once and for all that films based on the plots of video games, much like the saga of Britney Spears and K-Fed, are crushing the soul of America. Good night and good luck. 2/10 - that includes 2 stars for set dressing. |
Nacho Libre......all I can say is soooo dissapointing......we need some good comedies!
|
Borat 10/10
I laughed the entire duration of this movie. Some of the humor may be a little low-brow for some, but certainly not for me. But a word of warning: leave the kids at home. Don't be like the moronic parent who brought their kids to the showing that I saw. The movie is rated R for very good reasons. |
I watched Wicker Park last night. I had been putting it off because I assumed it would be a cliche-ridden psycho-stalker flick. I'm glad it wasn't.
I'll give it a 7/10. |
Borat:
Saw it last night. Very rude, but also very funny! |
Borat: Somewhat funny, but in the end it was more awkward, like Life Aquatic. Spoiler: It was extremly depressing seeing a Supreme Court Justice saying that America was a Christian nation. He should be crucified.
3/10 |
UHF 7/10
Fun and pure nonsense, where does he come up with this stuff?? |
napoleon dynamite.
i live on the planet dvd...what can i say? i thought this film was hilarious. for some reason, napoleon being hit in the face by a steak thrown by uncle rico really sticks in my mind...but the whole film is excellent AS IS the dance sequence AND as is the fact that it doesn't do the usual hollywood thing and bail out in the end, trying to send all us back into the world loaded with a good dose of cheese. |
Borat:
it was very funny! i recommend it but beware some stuff is really gross. you'll know when you see it! i dont want to spoil it. this it a movie that i hope is still funny when it's on dvd. i'll rent it so everyone can see it too! 9.5/10 |
Casino Royale (12 a.m. showing, of course) 10/10
Words cannot describe it. Just go see for yourself. Borat: There were good parts... 2.7/10 |
The Retarded ... um sorry, Departed
Poor old Martin, alzhiemers has set in and they still give him unlimited freedoms with script and money ... sad really ... time to move to florida old man ... this is the worst movie the man has ever made |
Joyeux Noel --
about the WW1 spontaneous ceasefire on Christmas Eve. What a great movie, it gave a very human face to the War. Dark Water --Japanese version I was so distracted by the subserviant behaviour of the main character (female) that it ruined the entire film for me. I found that more horrifying than the dead kid trying to kill her. |
Stranger Than Fiction (10/10)
This was a truly great movie. It was funny and moving. The acting and directing were perfect. My wife and I both loved it. Anything else could be considered a spoiler because part of the fun of this movie is the way it slowly reveals its nature. Spoiler: It was mysterious but at the same time it was set in the middle of normal workdays and normal life issues. It was nothing at all like Office Space or an obscure French movie, though a story outline might make you think so. It was funny and romantic. It was sexy without nudity & action-packed with little on-screen violence. The characters seemed real but heroic; I don't think I will ever forget them. The mythological and cultural references were surprising and often humorous. The ending was exactly what it should be. Stranger Than Fiction had something worthwhile to say and said it well, and it made me laugh my ass off in the process. I highly recommend going to see it on a date. |
The Fountain: 10/10
This movie is what film making is for. Darren Aronofsky delivers an outstandingly poetic and intriguingly thought provoking story that deals with mankind's obsession with immortality. Some thought it was too fragmented, but I thought Aronofsky tied the movie's intricate plot together very well, and with amazing imagery. The cinematography alone was enough to watch this movie a few more times. I highly recommend it. |

Stranger Than Fiction 8/10
I liked this movie but my date didn't. Don't go to see this movie if you want to see a Will Farrel movie. you will probably be disappointed. Go see this movie because it is a pretty good movie. I wont get into any spoilers but this seems to be a well thought out original story, I cant recall seeing anything similar and that in its self is a good enough reason to see it. The acting was good the chosen actors were good too. I really liked the story line. it made you like the characters and care for them long before the end of the movie. As for the ending...it was good, I like how it was written, but.....This is one movie where I hope alternate endings are included on the DVD version. it is also one witch could easily accommodate alternate endings. |
The Descent
this was a GREAT movie about 6girls that go out exploring caves for fun but end up in more trouble than expected. it's probably the best horror movie i saw in a few years. made my gf really scared! and it's not the typical american horror. i think this one was made in england. 9/10 |

I think he scored big with this one. No mean feat capturing the darker side of Boston. 8/10 Just finished watching The Death Of Mr Lazerescu... Great drama, very upsetting. 8.5/10  |
The last two movies I watched:
Donnie Darko: 8/10 - I was surprised by how good this movie actually was. I was expecting some teen-drama crap about a crazy high schooler. Instead I got a movie about time travel and alternate realities. Spirited Away: 6/10 - This movie was decent. I frequently like anime, but this movie just didn't do anything special for me. |
"Three...Extremes"
A collection of three short films from China, Korea, and Japan. I typically think that China "The Eye" and Japan "Ju-On" produce some of the best horror flicks I've seen. Of course, like a great home run hitter, one cannot hit home runs without striking out an awful lot. "Three...Extremes" was one of those strikeouts, I think. It was as if they had studied Tales From the Crypt but forgot the tongue-in-cheek aspect of it. 3/10 |
"Brat" (English title, "Brother"). Russian film from 1997. This film was excellent. Although the story can be hard to follow at times, it is still an excellently detailed plot.
The movie follows a man stright out of his mandatory military service, who goes to St. Petersburg to see his brother and start a new life, but through deception of his brother he ends up becoming a hitman. This movie is difficult to find in the US, but if you can find it, I recommend you watch it. It is in russian with about about 7 language options for subtitles (including english). |
"Manuale d'Amore"
7/10 - a recent Italian movie that is a simple but enjoyable sketch on the several stages of love and relationships. A little clichéd but I laughed out loud a couple of times watching it. What in Portugal is called a tragicomedy. Sad but true portrait of love and its hardships and of the frailty of the human will. |
V for Vendetta:
I've seen this two or three times and I can't decide if it is just an awesome ride or if there is some deeper meaning to it. Either way, Hugo Weaving is a great orator and it shows. Even if it doesn't mean anything, it does a great job of it. 9/10 |
The fountain - 3/10 ..
I just couldn't get into this one. This is one of those movies that you either love, or you hate. All 3 people I saw it with (and half the theatre) walked out of the theater upset they paid to see this movie. |

I agree 100%. I saw this movie myself for the first time a few days ago. Didnt want to because I felt the previews looked cheesy. Hugo Weaving is simply sensational! he adds something to this movie that I cant describe. This role has shot this man with nuclear intensity straight into my favorite actors category. 9/10 |
I just saw "Happy Feet". It sucked, there was no plot, it was a tired formula flick that was poorly done --it was insulting and if you're thinking of bringing your kids to see it, don't. They're smarter than this film. We walked out. 2/10 (visually very nice).

Superman Returns 2.5/10 - see my review:

Apocalypto
I think I'm done trying to give Mel Gibson another shot. In my opinion, he shoulda stopped after Braveheart. This was so disappointing. Yes, there was gratuitious violence, which I enjoy. And, yes, there is historical significance to the story. But give it a rest already. The scenery is great, makeup great, etc. I'm still trying to figure out the point of making this movie. 5/10 and it only gets that much because Mel has a knack for inserting violence right when I'm about to nod off. |
