Dark Days [2000]

- A gritty documentary on the homeless living in the Amtrak subways tunnels in New York City and their struggle with day to day life.

It really reminds me that given the opportunity and means to do so, the homeless can contribute more to society and gain confidence in themselves by having a stable residence and being lifted of poverished conditions.

Definitely recommend it and does not receive as much attention as it should have, given the overall film and it was well received at sundance and other festivals when released.

A soundtrack that is entirely composed and performed by DJ Shadow is icing on the cake.

8.5/10

The Fog of War -- An interview with Robert McNamara, Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam War. Thoroughly depressing at times, especially when he's describing the firebombing campaigns on Japan in WWII. He comes off as more sympathetic here than other times, but he's still a man who helped orchestrate many, many human deaths, and it's not clear if he really regrets it, though he professes to. 7/10 -- Interesting, but a little simplistic.

Undead 10/10

If you like zombies, aliens & chicks in their undies wielding shotguns, this is the movie for you. An obvious tribute to the genius that is Dead Alive (aka Braindead).

I have a few in the last two weeks...

Ice Age 2 - 8.5/10

I actually liked it more than the first, but my wife and I both enjoyed it quite a bit. Sure, it's animated, but it's funny and quite entertaining to watch. I highly recommend it, even if you've never seen the first.

Capote - 9.5/10

Wow! There's no wonder this was an award winning movie and performance. I never expected someone could play Truman Capote so dead on. It was a fantastic movie to watch. Now I need to pick up his book, "In Cold Blood", which the writing of is the basis for the movie.

What the BLEEP Do We Know? - 7/10

It's an interesting movie. I recommend at least some fundamental udnerstnad of physics or science in general to even be mildly interested. I'm not sure how accurate all of the accounts are in it, but it surely brings quantum physics into a psuedo-sci-fi type of movie. Worth a rental if you want something different.

blahblah454 04-12-2006 01:46 PM

Tremors 3 - 6.5/10

If you like cheesy B movie flicks then check this one out. It starts out frighteningly slow, then about half way through it really picks up and just turns into a total killer. This movie has THE worst computer annimation I have ever seen in my life, so if you like cheese check it out!

imouseone 04-12-2006 07:49 PM

Inside man 6/10 - Too slow at a lot of points in the movie, I would turn and look at my girlfriend, she would look bad in boredom.

V for Vendetta 8/10 - Hugo Weaving is the man.

noodle 04-13-2006 12:45 PM

Gozu

Effing hilarious. I understand that this is supposed to be a horror film, but I haven't laughed so hard in a long time. Disappearing dead mob bodies, yakuza-killing chihuhuas, grandmothers milking themselves, crossdressing poopers... 9.5/10, man.

Lucifer 04-15-2006 10:21 AM

Sabah 10/10. Absolutely wonderful movie. A Muslim Canadian woman, whose life has passed her by while she takes care of her mother, unexpectedly falls in love with a 100% WASP man. Cue: Culture clash!

blahblah454 04-15-2006 10:52 AM

Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back
9/10

If you like the Clerks/Mallrats movies then defanitly see this one. I bet ya I have seen this one 10 times and it still cracks me up every time. Tons of immature humor and swearing up the wazoo but damn its a funny movie.

Grasshopper Green 04-16-2006 03:59 PM

We just saw Thank You For Smoking. It was hilarious. I rarely laugh out loud at films, but I laughed almost the entire way through this one. It's really not about smoking as much as it is making fun of lobbying and politics. All of the acting was fantastic, but the kid annoyed me for some reason...can't put my finger on it. Hubby and I wanted to see this since we saw the first trailer for it, and it was well worth the wait...funniest movie I've seen in a long, long time. 4.5/5

noodle 04-16-2006 04:56 PM

Code 46

Still not quite sure what to make of this movie. Definitely intelligent. Quality cinetmatography. Interesting plot. Strange choice of actors. I'm going to give it a 7/10, I think. A Code 46 violation, by the way, is the futuristic act of procreating with someone who shares 100%, 50% or 25% of your DNA.

Locke7 04-16-2006 07:07 PM

Walk the line - 9/10

I thought Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash was great. I could see him winning the oscar. I also thought Reese was great as well. She sounded better than the original June Carter Cash IMO.

hunnychile 04-16-2006 10:08 PM

Good Night and Good Luck - 9/10

Surprisingly good, in fact...I'm glad I finally saw this short but worthy film. George Clooney shows some moxie in his script about a few media people who did have the balls to speak up against McCarthy & his "commie pinko" campaign in the 1950s.

/an original slant on spin-doctoring/

SecretMethod70 04-17-2006 12:42 AM

Broken Flowers

Excellent movie. Similar to Lost in Translation - and with Bill Murray too - but not quite as good. Still well worth watching though. While the style is similar to Lost in Translation, the subject is very different.

7/10

Kostya 04-17-2006 12:45 AM

Tsotsi - I can't say enough for this film.

blahblah454 04-18-2006 06:25 PM

King Kong (new one)

5/10

Total cheese. All it was was special effects and corny ass dialouge. I saw it in theaters before and thought it was decent, then just watching it again on TV and hated it.

Daoust 04-19-2006 04:47 PM

Good Night, And Good Luck

A great little film. One of the best movies I've seen in a while. I loved all the performances. I loved Strathairn's speech, at the beginning and the end of the film. I found myself cheering for Murrow throughout the film.

Clooney does a good job on the writing. He is attentive to detail, but at the same time the script is not laiden with inside, subtle, political savvy dialogue. I think someone who wrote a college paper on McCarthyism and someone who has never heard of Murrow or the Red Scare could sit down together and enjoy this film.

9/10 (One of my only 9's ever given on TFP)

I can't wait to see Tsotsi either. It's on it's way to me this week from Netflix!

Hello,

Has anyone ever been really surprised about a movie being good. I just watched A History of Violence and I guess I had real low expectations, but I was really surprised by the gore, I just didn't expect it to be like that. Worth watching

Min 04-19-2006 08:47 PM

I went on a bit of a bender:
The Passion of the Christ, without subtitles, thus, I have no impression of what was being said. I only understood the counting in Latin and Christ's comment on the cross (in Aramaic) asking why G-d had abandoned him. I kind of guessed at the part he says, 'forgive them they know not what they do'. Either way, from a purely visual standpoint, the acting and scenes are powerful. I would recommend it for the sake of being a good movie.

Nightwatch, I had subtitles for this Russian film. It was convoluted in the beginning but, it picked up enough pace and enough of my interest I have the book on pre-order for when it is published in English. I would call it a mix between Underworld (with its vampires) and Matrix (a world within a world) concept. I confess those aren't the best analogies. Just see it :)

Lastly, A Distant Sound of Thunder, an adaptation from the Bradbury short story. It really isn't that bad. Yes, the budget was cut and some of the effects are amateurish, however, the main creature is spectacular, the acting strong and the plot feasible.

None of the movies changed my life, each passed the time well, I give them all a 7/10. I'm a rough critic. If it is 10/10 for me, it's the best freakin' movie ever made.

Grasshopper Green 04-23-2006 05:22 PM

Hubby and I just saw Match Point. It was highly disturbing to both of us; I guess it Spoiler: the fact that the main character could just kill his lover like that. Anyway, the acting was pretty good... the story dragged a bit in the beginning...and I was ready for it to be over 15 minutes before it was. I'd say 3/5.

Locke7 04-23-2006 06:53 PM

Just watched Harry Potter: The goblet of fire.

5/10

It was OK, just another Harry adventure. Sure set up the next one though.

I totally agree except I didn't have a problem with the kid, I don't have a Hubby, and 5/5. Great Movie

The Assassination of Richard Nixon

Really, surprisingly amazing.
4.5/5

Lucky Number Slevin

I downloaded and watched it yesterday. I loved it. The way that the story was told seem like a Shyamalan and Tarantino film rolled into one. Great job by all the actors in the film.

9/10

blahblah454 04-24-2006 09:32 PM

Fun with Dick and Jane

2/10

I thought this movie was a total piece of shit. It had about 5 minuits of total funny in it, the rest I just wanted to fall asleep.

Hubby really wanted to see this, but after I read the bad reviews I didn't want to. I'll make sure I don't rent it.

The beach 4/10

The visuals were nice, but about the time the movie turned in to a video game, I asked myself what in the world is going on.

blahblah454 04-30-2006 03:22 PM

Good call Medusa, it had almost no redeaming points to it at all.

Howard the Duck!
9/10

One of the greatest flops ever made! This was a childhood favorite of mine when I owned it on Beta, I just got myself a copy on DVD (bootleg :() from Ebay and I love it just as much now as I did as a kid!

Anywho, I borrowed 'The Island' from a friend.

I like the cloneing SciFi aspect to it ... but the ending of the movie was what killed it for me - predictable and pretty uneventful.

platoon
8/10
realistic? war movie...rated 140 on the imdb list

mandy 05-03-2006 08:32 AM

Mindhunters with LL Cool J and Christian Slater.dont really know much of the other actors.

definately a 10/10. totally and completely makes you want to be right ther in the middle of all that psycological thrilleryness:) it makes you think and has a twist at the very end that you would not believe.
EXCELLENT!

the movie i saw before that was called Waiting. it was about a day in the life of waiters and waitresses and all the bullshit they have to go through.

being a waiter myself, i could totally relate to everything they did and said and even found myself singing along to the birthday song they sang. most of it was all bullshit though like spitting in difficult customers food and playing stupid games.

a fun movie to watch. i'd rate it a 8/10.

Grasshopper Green 05-06-2006 07:29 AM

Ok, not really a movie but....I just re-watched Band of Brothers. I can't express how much I like this miniseries. After watching it, I know exactly why these men were called the Great Generation. 5/5

Willravel 05-06-2006 07:43 AM

Thank You for Smoking 8/10
-Very funny, relevent, interesting, great acting, great directing, and an excelent performance from William H. Macy. Whether or not you smoke, this movie is worth your time, IMHO.

The Sentinal 4/10
-In an attempt to creat a 24 movie these people remade every boring government movie I've ever seen. Keifer Southerland and Michael Douglas couldn't save this script. And thanks to Kim Basinger for supporting my believe that she can't act for beans.

Silent Hill, 2/10
-Not scary, not interesating, derivitive, boring, transparent. The only thing the movie had going for it was having Sean Bean cast, and they underuntilized him in a major way. I'm dissapointed.

MI3, 3/10
-MI2 was WAY better. Was John Woo busy or something? Oversold Tom Cruise, and underutilized Maggie Q, Ving Rhames, and Laurence Fishburne...

Kadath 05-06-2006 08:39 PM

Run Lola Run 7/10
Finally got around to watching this. Even at only 80 minutes, it dragged a bit in the middle, but the ending was very strong. Enjoyable.

fresnelly 05-07-2006 06:38 AM

The Transporter 2

7/10

I was in the mood for something escapist and this completely fit the bill. Jason Statham has a strong enough presence to ground the over the top action, and the fight scenes were pretty creative and entertaining. Think Jackie Chan without the mugging.

I counted 3 stunts that were completely ludicrous, but the rest of the film was exciting enough that I could overlook them.

Grasshopper Green 05-07-2006 04:12 PM

We saw Mission Impossible 3 last night. The first half was boring and the second half was beyond silly. I liked the first two, but the ludicrousness (if that's even a word) of this movie just bugged me the entire time, even though that's what MI is supposed to be about. Plus, I really can't stand Tom Cruise's acting, which may have biased me against the movie. Complete waste of money and time....1/5.

Mantus 05-09-2006 01:33 PM

Scary Movie 4.

Should I even bother saying anything? The first 10 mintues had me laughing my pants off. The remaining 80 minutes forced me to keep them off just so I can entertain myself - and you thought it was spilled pop didn't you? Thankfully it was mercifully short. Come to think of it, it's a bit superfluous to add humor to the horror genre. Ah well, I didn't need those $11 anyways.

fresnelly 05-09-2006 06:58 PM

Match Point, written and directed by Woody Allen.

Boooo-ring. It's playing right now, but I'm ignoring it except for the sex scenes. How odd for a movie with a forgone conclusion of a plot that's stocked with one-note characters, to start with a quote about luck and the unpredictablity of life.

1 star for the London scenery, snippets of opera, and Scarlett Johannsen looking fetching.

Just to be clear, there's no actual nudity.

blahblah454 05-11-2006 03:20 AM

The Princess Bride
8.5/10

Great movie, the little kid from the wonder years is a little irritating but overall this is an excellent movie. I watched it with a friend and her four year old son and the boy just loved it. He was laughing his head off during the fight scene between Westley and Fezzik (Andre the Giant). I recommend this movie to everyone, any age at all.
