withnail and i
i hadnt seen this until last night. i dont know what i was thinking what a fine fine film. |
dogville
excellent film. technically amazing, given the constraint (sets) von trier work within. and i think he is right. |
THX 1138.
9/10 This is what science fiction is all about, a social statement. It's very clear that this movie set the stage stylestically for the vast majority of science fiction movies that followed. It's one of the best realized science fiction worlds of the 20th century. |

Garden State- 8. 99/10. I recommend seeing it.
|
The Hidden Fortress - 9/10
Royalty & peasantry work together to save an entire Clan in this great Japanese civil-war era flick. The equivalent of a star wars film circa 1960. Huge sets, thousands of extras, expansive cinematography. |
hero - 3/5
cool fighting scenes and costume design seemed longer than it actually was perhaps the best movie in the cineplex right now? (wouldn't mind seeing The Yes Men but it's not playing here...) kill bill v. 2 - 3/5 caucasians are slower ninja-types the action sequences were cut repeatedly to show single attacks close up this method made the fight sequences less exciting than those in hero but the dialogue and morricone music made up for it end credits were pretty cool, but tarantino has lost a little spice "based on the bride character by Q & U" awww, how sweet, they DO belong together |
Ran - Akira Kurosawa.
This movie is so good I almost soiled myself. |
Popeye-With Robin Williams
Its a kitchy flick back from the early 80's, but its a lot of fun to watch. 5.5/10. V. |
Ghosts...of the Civil Dead
John Hillcoat features music and acting by Nick Cave This is a jail movie, but its main focus is the changing nature of power. Set inside a "new-generation" prison (like that in the tv series Oz), It follows the true story of a prison neglected by the state which led to overcrowding, violence between inmates, and an eventual lockdown (being confined to your cell) that lasted in excess of 6 months. The movie starts cautiously, but the tension is built very well, and the real turning point of the movie is when the prisoners' drugs and personal belongings are confiscated, pushing them to the edge of sanity. The movie looks great, clever camera angles give a real sense of claustrophobia, not to mention outstanding acting. Nick Cave's soundtrack is equally as twisted as the film. This is an Australian movie, and so might be harder to find, also you need to suspend your disbelief to get over the accents if your not an aussie. 9/10 NB: not for the kiddies, there are a couple of violent scenes. |
Careful
7/10 An interesting visual style, probably my favorite part of the film. It's funny and worth at least one watch, but probably not one of the best movies ever made. Overall, an interesting and weird ride... |
the shining
8/10 id hoped for some horror but didnt get any only suspense jack nicholas rocked in it(like he always does) his wife was scary looking hto :p |
eternal sunshine of the spotless mind -- 10/10
i just got done watching this for the first time. i bought it tonight b/c i heard it was good and it was by far the best $20 i've spent in a long time. it's so incredibly well written and complex, it's just amazing. i guess it helps that im a sucker for movies that really make you reflect on your own life and appreciate everything you've gone through. anyway, if you havent seen it, you should. |
Envy - 2/5
Jack Black, Ben Stiller and Christopher Walken made the movie, I love those guys.. too bad the script sucked balls.. |
Dodgeball 1/10
stupid movie, I hate the ever repeating kind of comedy. Stupid old stereotypical jokes. Japanes dressed as Sumo wrestlers, German team named "Blitzkrieg" .... new jokes ... really ... Hellboy 8/10 cool movie, the movie is nor too serious about itself. very enjoyable. but I'm biased because I love Hellboy :) White Chicks 1/10 same as Dodgeball: stupid, 08/15 comedy |
Big Fish - 7/10
I somehow was hoping for more. It was charming, but charm alone doesn't cut it for me. The ending saved it for me, as otherwise I thought a lot of it was clever for the sake of cleverness. |
AvP - Shitty, but unintentionally hilarious.
Some highlights: A whaling station a few miles inland. A giant laser which bores a tunnel which doesn't have smooth sides. Predators and Aliens both, (as far as they have been portrayed in other films) are susceptible to the cold, that's why the whole thing goes down, in Antarctica, at night. A woman in a tank top in Antarctica at night. Apparently Antarctica was inhabited back in the old days. Inhabited by people who spoke Egyptian, Cambodian and Aztec... The list goes on and on. Still, pretty funny. |
mystic river.
crap. i was surprised at how bad the directing and soundtrack were. just before the end, the dvd jammed. i did not care. |
amelie - 3.25/5
nice stylistic feel, similar to wes anderson stuff i got impatient 3/4 of the way through obviously she was going to hook up with the guy but it was dragged out too much "meet me here. when you do so, i'll tell you another place to meet me." after three or more iterations, i was ready for the payoff |
Throne of Blood - 9.75/10
Not too shabby. Tad short. |
i watched casino again last night, havent seen it in a few years.
great acting all round, sharon stone humiliates herself as the slave to her pimp boyfriend, deniro presents an honest and likeable bookie, and pesci stabs everyone in the chest. nicely directed, and actually very funny look at why "this would be the last time anyone trusted a couple of wiseguys to run a casino" 4.5 / 5 |
cure
very interesting film. really a pleasure to watch, even at those moments when it veers quite close to being a detective. great use of sound, smart direction. good stuff. |
I watched "Saved" lastnight
I thought it was really well done....had good laughs and had interesting ideas towards organized religion. Jena Malone did an amazing job with her role as the confused born again. Mandy Moore did a great job as the religiously obsessed b*tch. Maculay Culkin was suprisingly good in his role as the crippled rebellious brother I always liked Patrick Fugit...especially his role in Spun...great actor And Eva Amurri did good at making sure she wasn't too over the top with her bad ass outcast role. I give it the thumbs up....so check it out and let me know what you thought. |
Notorious - A 1946 movie by Alfred Hitchcock with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman.
I always miss the first 10 minutes of this movie, but it deals with CG and IB as a team of detectives trying to track down something fishy going on (this is all I was able to pick up on before the real plot kind of unravelled.) It's really hard to explain how the whole thing unfolds, but it is actually quite interesting, by the fact that you're trying to figure out what the hell is going on the whole time, but still be thoroughly into it. Check it out next time it's on TCM. |
I just saw Coffee and Cigarettes on dvd from netflix.
The movie feature several shorts with celebrities such as Iggy Pop, Tom Waits, Bill Murray, RZA, GZA, Steven Wright, and Roberto Benigni chatting over... cigarettes and coffee. Bill Murray with RZA and GZA was a great scene with RZA as an herbal doctor and Bill Murray as their waiter. Jack White was also pretty funny describing the genius of Nikola Tesla to Meg White, who doesn't seem too good in front of the camera. All in all a good flick. |
Sat up with a sick baby last night so I watched Equillibrium:
Sci fi movie set in a future where emotions are regulated by drugs, so there is no hate, greed, jealousy etc. But all the positive emotions are gone as well. Christian Bale stars as the main character, he's a member of an elite police force called the "clerics" who keep the peace and track down and kill "sense offenders" which is pretty much anyone who feels emotion. They're trained in "gun kata", a martial arts style that uses firearms, basically Matrix/Hong Kong cinema style gun-fu stepped up a notch. When he misses a dose of his medicine though he starts to feel and things get interesting (and bloody). Sean Bean has a small part, he dies of course, he's such an awesome actor but directors feel the need to kill him off in every movie he's in for some reason. Its basically an action movie, Christian Bale's character is BADASS and the gun fights are amazing. But it has a thoughtful aspect to it as well, its kind of a mix of 1984 and The Matrix. Has some plotholes and the message is pretty heavyhanded but overall thoroughly enjoyable, 4/5 |
clockwork orange
damn good movie about a dystopian future where crime is controlled by mind control and the side effects only 1984 beats this movie in its catagory |
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Can't give it more than a 7 out of 10, unfortunately. I guess all the hype surrounding it led me to believe it was going to be very good. The weakness came, in my opinion, from the secondary story line, that contributed little to the main story. And halfway through, I realized that I could stop watching and not be bothered by the fact that I'd miss the ending. It's probably just me, though. Maybe a lot of people like the "wacky-ness" factor. I thought it was a bit over the top. |

The end was the worst part, you didn't miss much ;) |
THX1138 9/10
Very cool movie. Watching it again with the director's commentary (George Lucas) is a must to understand just how much is going on in the film. Saved 7.5/10 Good, fun movie. Simple message, odd development, wouldn't have watched it if my girlfriend didn't rent it... Worth seeing once tho |
I love movies, but don't go to the theater anymore. I just can't justify the money, and knowing that I'm going to have some jerk around me talking, kicking the chair, or any other number of assface things. Plus, with my set up at home, I have a better picture and sound, and a much better seat :)
That being said, I'm a huge fan of Netflix. So, I'm always a little behind the current hits, but they're current to me. Two nights ago I watched "Radio." I'm usually a sucker for emotional movies, but this one just wasn't very good. I'd give it 2 out of 5. Up next is Hidalgo and Hellboy.......I'm into the one word movie titles right now, preferably starting with an "H." |
Kill Bill v2 - 6/10
v1 was a lot better. I don't know the history behind this movie, but the action scenes (except for the eyeball scene) sucked. Uma's beginning to show some mileage as well, which pains me to say, as I used to drool like Pavlov's dog at the sight of her. This role in general is more suited to someone like, say, Juliette Lewis - someone with a real wild streak, not a classic beauty like Thurman. Complete waste, and I suspect she chose this role because of her recent divorce. I was expecting more from Michael Madsen too, but it was a shit part played with zero enthusiasm. David Carradine was fantastic, where the hell did that performance come from!?! Oh well...pretty disappointing Tarantino flick. |
Nosferatu - 1921 F. W. Murnau.
Ahhh, what brilliance. Dawn of the Dead - 1979 George A. Romero. Shits all over the new version. Violent, hilarious, caustic and overall classic B grade horror. |
I just saw Team America - World Police. I thought it was really really funny. It was South Park funny. Lots of vulgarity, lots of over the top stuff, but I won't lie - I was laughing till I cried. All the songs alone are enough to give this movie a good rating in my opinion. You couldn't go to this movie and not laugh. Well, you could if you were expecting to see Remains of the Day. So many good and memorable lines as well.
What did you think? "You had me at dicks fuck assholes" |
lilies
great, smart film. |
Napoleon Dynamite - Best Episode Ever
No, it was very good though! I loved it! "i caught you a delicious bass" |
Mystic river 7/10 well acted thoughtful (if flawed) piece of filmmaking, it's been kicked a bit in previous posts but I think it held up well, I'd watch it again just for sean penns acting
|
Kwaidan - 7/10
Japanese flick made up of four different ghost stories. This is a QUIET movie. Dialogue and sound are quite sparse, and it definitely sets an effective mood for telling ghost stories. 'Hoichi The Earless' is creepy in the extreme. The atmosphere this movie creates is spellbounding. |
The Day After Tomorrow
5/10. a mildly entertaining piece of crap. i didn't have high hopes, and i enjoyed it for the most part (the first half more than the second). it's a little long, though. |

LOVED both 28 Days Later and the new Dawn of the Dead. i didn't really find either particularly scary, but i did find both to be tons of fun nonetheless. |
