MTV's Real World? Road Rules? Has the novelty worn off yet?

I'm sure a lot of people will say the novelty wore off along time ago. Personally, I think they have been, for the most part, entertaining enough to keep going. At least until now.

Does anyone think MTV needs some new ideas and quick? I know the Real World/Road Rules shows (with the challenges) have been MTV's bread and butter but the last seasons Road Rules was just awful and even the fight that caused the one guy to get kicked off wasn't enough to get me into the show.

And the Real World Paris couldn't be more boring.

Then there's The Real World/Road Rules Challenge: The Gauntlet which, if the first few episodes are any indication, is shaping up to be the least exciting challenge game ever. And I've really liked the previous challenges.

But, come on, The whole Gauntlet name suggests difficulty, complexity, and maybe even danger? So far it's only been dumb. Hanging upside down over a pool? Riding a mechanical bull? Putting some silly puzzel together? I think I'd probably find more excitement on bingo night at that nursing home near my house.

So, isn't it time to start with a clean slate and come up with a new formula? Sure Real World was groundbreaking (as the producers Bunim and Murray are quick to point out) when it started. But that was in 1992 and 11 years later, I think it's finally starting to get stale.

I don't think they're going to change the formula for something that they know attracts the attention of the countless teenage Americans of easy-to-please tastes.

It seems that despite its crappiness, you still watch it sometimes. I don't like it much myself, but I must confess to getting stuck watching it sometimes.

Nope, people eat it up for some odd reason. I like watching Fear Factor to see hot chicks do disgusting stunts although Fear Factor isn't like those stupid shows.

The Real World is like crack. I fucking hate it, but I'm hooked when its around. That brunette girl this season is fucking gorgeous. One of my friends went to the casting call in Raliegh NC, but he was passed over for a callback in favor of a closeted soccer player. Ain't life a bitch.

have seen it in large fragments a few times and I must have completely missed the "appeal" or "novelty" of the show. Wrote it off as yet more MTV drek when I first saw it and have seen nothing to change my mind yet.

I really hated it at the begining and didn't check it out until they did the Hawaii season or whatever with that fuckin Tech dude (whom I hated at the time) then I kept my eye on it after that. Basically if they keep putting hot chicks on it and stupid assholes who cause unecessary drama then there will always be a reason to watch it instead of many of the other VERY EXCITING television programs they usually air in the mornings (since the only times I do watch it is when they're showing re-runs early in the morning and I didn't sleep. Nothing else is on!) Plus I'd reeeeeeeeeeeeally like to fuck the brunette and I'm always on the look out for her in a bathing suit. That Mallory bitch is pretty damn gorgeous too but that other blond bitch gets on my nerves and I can't stand her.

I never liked real world, but I thought road rules was cool. You could see different parts of the world, and do REAL challenges. Unlike survivor which was just a joke. The last season wasn't my favorite, but I just wanted to see Donnell sp? voted off. I was amazed he stayed there that long.

I don't like these shows anymore. All of the people are too camera-aware and don't seem to be "real" anymore. This could also be because I'm 29 and remember how great RW was in it's first few seasons before people started going on the show trying to springboard into acting

I'm way out of the MTV demo, but I still watch Real World--Usually on sat. a.m. when I'm laying around like a lump [i.e. my real world].

Never watched Road Rules. Actually met a girl on a plane a few months back that had been on it a few years ago...she was great...still never watched it.

The shows have gone downhill because the producers are too manipulative these days. At first, it was an interesting social experiment, letting 7 strangers live together and see what happened. Now they go out of their way to cast people with problems and a need for exhibitionsim. 22 episodes of people getting drunk, not working, and fucking isn't really that interesting.

The Challenge seasons really do a bad thing: they make these former cast members think they are celebrities. You better bet that most of those people are self righteous pricks who think they are special because they were on the RW or RR. Notice the same camera whores keep coming back every year, while plenty of former cast members (Aaron from LA, Judd and Pam from SF, etc.) never come back. For some people, it was an interesting experience in life to be put on the shelf with other experiences, while for others, RW IS their life.

I don't know why, but I can't stop watching these shows, even though they are terrible.
I think one of the biggest problems with the shows is the fact that all the participants are a little too self-aware.
They've all seen all the shows, and know the formula by heart.
The cast members seem to be creating "conversation events" or "explosive dramatic moments" to increase their screen time.

And yet, nothing happens anymore on these shows. Just over 20 minutes of fluff, with a few "buzz-worthy" clips.
It's almost like we're watching a commercial for the real show.

I've always thought the show should go to an hour format...some of the most interesting moments happen in the spaces between stories, the random conversations.
I think MTV should consider a break, and re-invent the genre.

the thing you have to understand about mtv is that they are out to catch a certain audience. as you get older you arent drawn in as much by the content on the show as it is not geared for you. however what is being displayed now has already attracted a whole lot more younger viewers. at least thats my go at it. as for these real world/road rules shows i catch them like once a month because they show like four at a time. i really dont see much in them just something to watch while i surf the net.

If there isn't anyone naked then it isn't worth watching.

Not to mention they've had the same cast members in different bodies for the past five years. They found the type of people that work and they keep bringing them in.

The Homosexual, The Black Guy, The Black Girl, The Frat Boy, The Dumb Blonde Girl, The Smart Guy, The Alcoholic, and The One that Doesn't Do Anything.

I think MTV has lost alot of it's luster lately.I mean I don't know about you ,but I don't really care about Jessica Simpson and her husband and I'm really not interested looking at their life for 30 minutes to a hour.So for sure I don't care about looking at people I don't know at all for the same amount of time.Didn't some body did a news story about how both roed rule and real world are scripted.

It's shows like this that make me glad that my TV is broken

The first season of Road Rules was great, along with the second season. It was all good up until the 5th or so. What are they on now, like the 16th or some shit like that?

Novelty has worn off. Find something new, and it better not have Ashton Kucher in it!

I don't know why, but I still watch them all the time.

and I noticed that the current real world doesn't connect episode to episode as well as previous seaons. Its getting a bit too focused. Like how for two-three episodes they focused mainly on their job (cause of the turmoil with getting their shit done). Since then there hasn't been a single mention of their job, sans the occasional part where they're talking shit in the office.

I'll keep watching though until something comes along that better grabs my 'baby-dick' sized attention span.
