The Director's Label Series: Fianlly some quality Music Videos on DVD
For all the people who think that there are some excellent music videos out there that deserve a DVD release (I'm not the only one am I?) Palm Pictures (http://www.palmpictures.com) is putting out a series of DVD's on their new Director's Label (http://www.directorslabel.com/) that feature the works of respected music video directors.
The first three DVD's they're putting out feature Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and Chris Cunningham (whose excellent videos are usually deemed too disturbing for MTV). Personally, I've been waiting a long time for something like this. And since MTV killed off all its shows that played good music videos (in my opinion, MTV's Amp was the last show to consistently play interesting videos) there's really no other place to find the goods. I can't wait 'till they're released. |
Mark Romanek is one of the few music video directors out there whose name I recognize. I would definately buy a DVD of his work, if it were ever released.
He wrote and directed One Hour Photo, too. Granted, that wasn't the best movie or anything, but I thought it was amazing from a purely visual standpoint: every frame was a gorgeous picture. I'm looking forward to him directing a film written by a more competent screenwriter. |
yay Chris Cunningham and Michael Gondry rule, also I like Paul Hunter's eye for the dark and brooding..
Im a big video nerd. Ther are some stunnig videos comming out of japan right now by a group called "Vampires and Rainbows" really colorful and kinetic stuff.. Im definately adding these to my wishlist for holiday gifts. |
If they include the Fatboy Slim/Christopher Walken video, I'll buy the Spike collection. That is an AWESOME video. :)
As for Romanek, I hadn't heard of him before seeing Hurt but I have plenty of respect for him after that one. |

You've never seen the NIN "Closer" video he directed? Now that's a classic video (although I thought Hurt was excellent too). |
Excellent idea. A Romaneck volume would be especially welcome. sk

Hey, check this page out, found that off Google. A full listing of Fincher's directing career, music videos included. A lot of memorable ones there.... a handful old school Madonna and Paula Abdul (hey, I had an older sister who liked that stuff when I was younger, ok? :D) I think Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun" stands out from the list for me though. **EDIT** That site I linked to is pretty nice. Very comprehensive (or seems to be) list of music videos and directors. Anyone interested in the subject should poke around. |
