SPEED TRIBE -- Killer surround sound electronica on DVD/CD

SPEED TRIBE is an award-winning 2-disc DVD/CD from Dance.com, combining a sonic barrage of surround sound electronic beats with MTV-style films of the fast street and racing cars of Le Mans.

This "immersive entertainment" package combines the best media has to offer today: a DVD, an audio CD and additional online content. And, essentially, Speed Tribe is Baraka for the auto-racing set. Except for a few strategically placed sound bites, the film is dialog-free, thereby setting the sonic stage for the synchronized soundtrack courtesy of Front 242’s Daniel Bressanuti and Patrick Codenys. However, viewers aren’t subject to Front 242’s tell-tale tinny synths and gothic stomp but rather fuzzy soundscapes, LFO chirps and Underworld-inspired bass lines.

That soundtrack is the accompaniment to artfully filmed and craftily edited video imagery of the 24-hour Le Mans auto race in France–often cited as the world’s most grueling endurance race. Music-video directors Rod Chong and Sharon Matarazzo take viewers inside the race through images not only of the race itself but also of the drivers, the crews, the medics and the spectators. "We wanted to express how speed, technology and endurance come together in this amazing cultural event," says Chong. Exciting though the race may be, against the dreary, rainy French backdrop, Speed Tribe tells a stark, desolate story. It seems, then, that Chong and Matarazzo succeed in conveying the intense nature of Le Mans.

That is not to say that all of Speed Tribe’s 24 minutes are rain ponchos and long faces: The pace quickens; images blur; headlights bounce and leave trails as they scream past the camera. As the race continues on into the night, the DVD takes on somewhat of a different tone. Through clever camera tricks and beats optimized for surround sound, Speed Tribe’s nighttime footage really shines. It’s almost Lynchian.

Aside from its two cheesy catch phrases–"There is stillness in the speed" and "There is silence in the sound"–the Speed Tribe DVD (which contains exclusive driver-interview extras) and its 65-minute companion soundtrack walk the cutting edge of cool. Best-suited to watch during gloomy mornings or to listen to on long hazy drives, Speed Tribe is an exciting harbinger of things to come in the future of music entertainment.

RACE TECH
"The core of Speed Tribe consists of 25 minutes of beautifully captured footage of the 2001 Le Mans 24 Hour race not simply set against a background of modern electronic music, but edited to be in time with that music. Some of the footage contains camera shots that would make great photographs in their own right. The results are truly spectacular and probably unlike anything you will have seen before."

Digitally Obsessed
"Shot and assembled in digital video, the image quality is absolutely solid and, dare I say, perfect for the material presented. The manipulation of colors and effects on the footage creates all sorts of interesting visual effects, but nothing is flawed or unintentional; it's amazing video quality to say the least. Digital problems are simply not present, and instead, is a highly stylized and specially crafted image that shows a lot of care in how it was presented.

The musical score, as created by D. Bressanutti and P. Codenys, is not only good, but was specifically recorded and mixed into 6 channels for the Dolby 5.1 and DTS presentations. It's not often that music is actually recorded in 6 discreet channels for a DVD, and in this case, it paid off. The usage of all the speakers with the soundfield is simply amazing and Front 242 fans will go giddy with delight at this amazingly varied, textured, and bizarre electronic music creation. It's difficult to describe in words, but trust me, I doubt you will find a more unique sound experience anytime soon on DVD."

Super Street
"The makers of Speed Tribe are not foisting a virtual-reality gimmick on us - they've just taken the raw experience of the 2001 Le Mans 24-hour race and edited it into a gorgeous montage-style piece of music-video art that gives a whole new meaning to being a spectator. Speed Tribe's impressionistic take on Le Mans is the perfect union of rave culture, digital filmmaking, and sound manipulation - that or the result of way too many drugs."
