Questions about Tears Of The Sun
Hey there...I just watched Tears of the Sun...I was just wondering how realistic is this??? Does this kind of stuff really happen in Africa??? Like are there people that really do those horrible things to other ppl just because of cultural differences??? If so is there anything being done about it??? This movie was sad...and it pissed me off too...at the bad guys of course...I almost even shed a few tears at the end where the mother and child were reunited...anyone else have any comments on this film??? THANX

um...yeah dude, africa has been in that state for a long time, that kind of "tribal warfare" has been happening for at least a 1000 years. it's just been affected more by politics and the invention of more powerful weaponry lately.

Africa is a mess due to all that tribal warfare. They'll still come into neighboring village, take all the women and leave.
Now there's so many people over there, so many small countries wanting to be independant it's just a mess. What really scares me is the way the AID epidemic is over there.. Talk about a world problem. |

small scale tribal warfare that rarely crossed much in the way of territory exploded into continent-wide genocyde, due to the introduction of modern weaponry imo. its a mess.
as Ebert said of the movie, would have been cool if halfway through the movie, instead of pulling off this "core group of people must be saved and ill go back to my commanders after that", they did a sort of Heart of Darkness train of thought, say, the group continues fighting in the jungles indefinately. would have added a sort of morbid despondancy to the film, kind of regressed into typical american patriotic bunk through the latter third of the film.

For your information, more than 5 million Sudanese blacks were murdered by Muslim Arabs during the last two decades. And these are just the official numbers. Nobody knows how many more were raped and killed brutally.
Also, in Algeria the extreme Muslims are called rebels and they fight the government by invading villages of so-called moderate Muslims and kill everyone there. They murder about 100,000 non-rebel Algerians a year. Their case is really interesting because they are the most brutal killers out there. They peel the skin of their victims while they are alive... and leave the father of the family alive till the very end so he can see his family die. Nasty shit. Haven't seen the movie, though.
