Unpopular Movie Opinions

You know that movie that everyone just keeps raving about and you just can't understand why? How about your favorite that everyone keeps badmouthing? Tell us about it here. This thread was inspired in part by Fire's Equilibrium thread, but mostly I saw this same thread on another forum and it got some pretty interesting responses.

Here we go:
The 25th Hour was a good movie, but the mirror monologue was stupid.
The Boondock Saints was fun, but the characters were terrible; especially Agent Smecker and Detective Greenly. Maybe it was just a terrible script.
Josie and the Pussycats is hilarious. I need to buy that movie.
Blade is by far the best movie to come from a Marvel comic book.
Robert DeNiro is great in comedies.

CSflim 09-21-2003 04:57 PM

But do you have the balls to say that The Godfather is the worst movie ever made?

Batman976 09-21-2003 05:00 PM

Haha, I thought about that thread too when I made this one. I figured this one would encompass more than that one did. Unpopular opinions don't always have to be negative.

JusticeForPhat 09-21-2003 05:22 PM

people hate the fact that I knew how sixth sense was going to end 15 minutes in. And i thought Unbreakable was 10 times better.

And i think Clash of the Titans is one of the finest movies ever made.

LaZy 09-21-2003 05:25 PM

I thought Matrix:Reloaded would be better than it was. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but after I watched it I left with kind of a *meh* feeling.

Renegade 09-21-2003 05:30 PM

The original Punisher movie was great! The new one they're making probably won't be better. I should pop over to that Highest Bodycount thread cause I bet Punisher is up there.

frankgrimes 09-21-2003 05:38 PM

how about this: Ishtar wasnt that bad, not the greatest movie ever, but sorta funny, certainly not the worst movie ever. i also thought ferris buellers day off sucked.

filtherton 09-21-2003 05:39 PM

Dune by that twin peaks guy sucked ass. Changed the story from the book in stupid ways, casted Sting. 'nuff said.

Derwood 09-21-2003 05:39 PM

I know half of the lines to "Bring it On"

So ashamed....

frankgrimes 09-21-2003 05:42 PM

when titanic was out i saw it, hated it so much. everyone seemed to love it. now however, it seems to be getting the derision it so deserves.

Batman976 09-21-2003 05:44 PM

Here's one from the other board I saw this thread on.

It's okay to badmouth a movie even if you've only seen the trailer.

drawerfixer 09-21-2003 06:04 PM

I thought 'Fear and Loathing in Los Vegas' was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

-Blade is a good movie!

Averett 09-21-2003 06:10 PM

"Bring it On" is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies... I love the brother in that movie

ok, and this... i think American Psycho and Rules of Attraction are some the best films iīve seen in ages... i own them both on DVD.

how about this... i actually sat through Antonion Banderasīs The Thriteenth Warrior - well, actually i was lying across the comfy counches having sex in the empy theatre, but hey, we lasted till the end credits.

I hated that movie and everyone I told that to would get pissed. I still can't figure out what the big deal about that movie was.

I second that. I even own it on video. Is it even on DVD?

I even saw Super Mario Bros. in the theater and thought it was piss out loud funny.

fugue_life 09-21-2003 09:04 PM

HAHA, some how it came up with my friends that we all liked "bring it on" I am amused that so many people agree. Clah of the titans was a fine film as well. I heard there are plans to remake it too. I hope I don't read about anyone dis-ing AoD

On that note, I would like to say that Star Wars, yes Star Wars is the most over-rated movie series. I am aware that this will be the death of me :)

onodrim 09-21-2003 09:14 PM

Lets see...I remember seeing "As Good as it Gets" and thinking, that really wasn't all that good. Just my opinion. "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" wasn't even remotely funny to me. I really liked "Original Sin" even though everyone else seems to think that it sucked. Heh. Those are the first ones that come to mind.

Hrothgar 09-21-2003 10:09 PM

I really hated Boondock Saints. Thats some of the worst acting in film history,i.e. Pappa Joe and the brother's friend with the stupid jokes and the one word vocabulary. Is the fact that the word "fuck" is said so many times supposed to make it "hip" or something?

Punch Drunk Love I liked it alot. It really was a different side to Adam Sandler and I liked it.

mystmarimatt 09-21-2003 11:38 PM

Goodfellas. i dunno, people say it's brilliant, but i don't see it. the first half is cool, gangster stories, lotsa stuff, but the second half was just Ray Liotta and his family turned into a bunch of sickened druggies. i understand that it came from a book and all...i dunno, just seemed weird and left me feeling uneasy.

HugAPug 09-21-2003 11:47 PM

I really enjoyed Ghosts of Mars. I watched it twice in a row after I rented it. Whew. This feels pretty good getting off my chest.

Sledge 09-22-2003 12:20 AM

Boondock Saints: excellent style, shitty peripheral characters. I know, fellows, let's remind the audience that the detective is gay by making him pull a flamboyant stunt every twenty minutes, then dress up as a WOMAN and KICKING ASS! Woo!

To its credit, the psychology of the two brothers was really well done. To its discredit, you are not allowed to not give your film an ending. Maybe the scriptwriters missed that memo.

Now, if you said Jason and the Argonauts, you'd be talking about an underrated movie, but my wife just bought me Clash of the Titans on DVD. Lord, what a pile of crap. I'd managed to mentally edit Bubo out.

Not cool dude..not cool at all.

He was a criminal that turned good at the end, that realized the error in his ways, it was a transition. -_-.

Though, to each his own, no hard feelings.

When I read the thread title, I decided to post 1941. I think there were too many characters for most viewers to handle. Anyway, the dance/fight scene was incredible.

Also, Hudson Hawk was a lot of fun.

What does bad acting have to do with the transitional phase of a character? What transistional phase did Pappa Joe undergo? Pappa Joe's acting of an Italian Don was terrible. The director must have owed this guy money to let him in the movie.

Though to each his own, like you said.

brandon11983 09-22-2003 03:45 PM

1. Josie and the Pussycats was great! Buncha hot chicks runnin around in cat costumes playin' music

2. THE FUCKING RULES OF ATTRACTION!! I bitched about this just before the death of TFP 3.0, and still refuse to give it another chance. I saw absolutely no plot in this film, and most of the storylines had no correlation to one another.

3. Ghosts of Mars. I love hokey, violent films, featuring space zombies.

Is this an unpopular opinion? I didn't think it was, otherwise I would have mentioned that too.

Kaos 09-22-2003 07:29 PM

Josie and the Pussycats was an awesome movie...that and Bring It On are 2 of my guilty pleasures :D

Everyone I know has been badmouthing Punch Drunk Love...I thought it was an excellent movie.

mercury-hg 09-22-2003 09:43 PM

I sat all the way through Solaris. And liked it.

LaZy 09-22-2003 11:17 PM

I'm watching Masters of the Universe right now.......ON PURPOSE! :D

Batman976 09-22-2003 11:18 PM

Just so everyone knows where I stand on this issue.

Anime sucks.

Halx 09-23-2003 12:02 AM

I thought HULK was an incredible disaster. Oh man, if it weren't for Jennifer Connely, I would have walked out with or without my friends.

evilmongolian 09-23-2003 12:16 AM

Saving Private Ryan was boring, Ridley Scott is waaaaaaaaaay over-rated, Blade Runner was the biggest waste of my life, I wanted my money back after Matrix: Reloaded, I really enjoyed Tales from the Crypt: Bordello of Blood, Corey Feldman is a great actor, Blackhawk down was the worst war movie I have ever seen, The Lion King is the worst disney movie I have ever seen,
Julia Roberts should return her Best Actress award, considering she sucks, Jim Carrey deserved the Best Actor award in 2000, not Kevin Spacey, Seven was predictable and boring(saw the ending coming 20 minutes+ before the end), I dug Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, Jet Li movies are horrible, even by martial arts standards, Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai was a great movie, Silnece of the Lambs was waaaaaaaaaaay over-rated, as I ended up chatting on a compiter instead of paying attention to the movie(that rarely ever happens), Keanu Reeves was pretty good in Bram Stoker's Dracula.

And I agree, Anime sucks hard

Psivage 09-23-2003 11:41 AM

Saving Private Ryan- Didn't see what the big deal was.
Gone with the Wind- Never saw it don't want to see it
Resident Evil- great movie
Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2- Better then the first
Punisher- would of rock like hell if they would of painted a skull on his chest.

This movie hasn't been released yet and maybe not even made:
The Jessica Lynch Story- She got lost and capture, she is not a american hero. Won't see it ever.

CSflim 09-23-2003 12:21 PM

I didn't think that Eyes Wide Shut was that bad. Without a doubt it was Kubrick's weakest offering, but it's not like it was the worst film ever made, or anything like that.

I think the whole fascination with Star Wars is a bit of a generational thing, as in "you had to be there".
Me as a synical 19 year old, I don't see what the big screaming deal is.
I mean, the original trilogy is so blatantly one-dimensional, I don't see how people can read all sorts of crap into it. There is nothing profound or amazing about it. And don't even get me started on the script!
It had some pretty visuals (for its time), but THATS IT.
Yes Episode I & II sucked major ass...but this news just in...so did 4,5, and 6!
Face facts, your beloved trilogy was nothing more than a six hour toy commercial.

I loved "Matrix: Reloaded"

All anime sucks? That's a lot of stuff out there that sucks.

EeOh1 09-23-2003 03:42 PM

Like many others here, I got my hopes up about Matrix Reloaded and was tremendously disappointed. Hope the last movie is better.

The Hulk sucked very badly. So did Spider Man.

Anyone even remotely responsible for Titanic should be horsewhipped until they promise never, ever to inflict something so goddamned awful on society again.

I know it's an exceptionally cheesy movie, but I really enjoyed Hudson Hawk.

I enjoyed the Thirteenth Warrior as well.

Add another to the "anime truly sucks" group.

Just my opinion.

Lasereth 09-24-2003 06:53 PM

I saw Matrix Reloaded in the theatre four times, the fourth time being in IMAX. That movie is incredible; most people were simply pissed because it wasn't like the first one at all. The first Matrix was like a videogame, and the second one was like a novel. I'm really looking forward to Revolutions. I think that most of the people that were disappointed with Reloaded were simply expecting something completely different. I sure as hell was, but seeing the movie a second time definitely showed me how good it really was. There's a big difference in "not what I expected" and "sucked." Hell, I'll say it was even better than the first one in nearly every aspect. Just because it wasn't like what anyone was expecting and completely different from the first one doesn't mean that it's a bad movie. If one were to analyze it based on the first one, it really is a weird comparison. They seem like two completely different series, only with Reloaded being far more in-depth about Zion and the real-world.

That could not have been said any better. It seems that some of the people that didn't like reloaded didn't really understand it. I'm glad that it didn't turn out to be all action and no thought.

Waterworld with Kevin Costner? I personally really enjoyed that flick. Jeanne Tripplethorne has always beguiled me and when Costner's character grabbed a water skiing line and a harpoon, then jumped off the back of his catamaran to use himself as a fishing lure...I thought...holy shit is that neat :)

Xiangsu 09-25-2003 06:30 PM

I like Titanic. I like the Harry Potter books, the movies are ok. I didn't like the LOTR books but I love the movies. Oh and I think Andy Dick is great and I am deeply saddened by the cancelling of his show on mtv.

Xiangsu 09-25-2003 06:31 PM

I liked The Matrix Reloaded, the Hulk and I own Spiderman.

hawkeye 09-25-2003 09:49 PM

Personally I can't see anything funny in Scary Movie
(although I will go see Scary Movie III 'cause Kevin Smith's involved)
I never got American Pie either.

Four Fingers 09-25-2003 10:30 PM

I think Swept Away is Guy Ritchie's best film. And Alien 4 was the best of the series.

These are real opinions BTW.

Batman976 09-25-2003 10:36 PM

I think Zoolander may well be the funniest movie ever made.

Mr_Q 09-26-2003 08:08 AM

Well... here goes...

I love the movie Kung Pow. I think it's hilarious.

And The DVD has this option to turn off the dubbing, where you can hear what the main character was actually saying before they dubbed him to hake it look like a dubbed movie.

scansinboy 09-26-2003 12:03 PM

I'm gald to see that I'm not the only one who thinks that Spiderman was just TERRIBLE.
The acting was flat, Tobey McGuire couldn't have delivered his lines any worse if he was a cardboard cutout. There was no character development, Willam Defoe went from sensitive rich guy to bi-polar split-personality in an instant, and the ending, where he rejects MJ, after pining for her the whole movie? WTF was that all about? The First batman was far superior to this piece of dreck.

Mr. Spacemonkey 09-26-2003 12:12 PM

Okay everyone, be prepared. I thought Kung Pow was funny . . . zoolander wasn't all that bad either.

archer2371 09-26-2003 03:53 PM

Kung Pow was hilarious! I couldn't stop laughing!

Solitude 09-26-2003 07:33 PM

Boondock Saints was fun, but definitely not a good movie. The best thing about it was Willem Dafoe's creepy character.

Goodfellas is far overrated. Watch the first half and then just shut it off.

Heat has the worst ending to any great film. *Spoiler here. Skip down to the next paragraph. Robert DeNiro's character talks about walking away at any time, no matter what the cost, during the entire movie. So what happens at the end? He's got the money, he's got the girl. He's getting away. Then for no reason at all, his character does a complete 180. He turns back to take revenge and gets killed. Bah! I can't watch the ending ever again. It ruins the movie.

Saving Private Ryan. Uh. Nice battle scenes. That's about it. The story was corny. The ending was blah. Anyone see > When Trumpets Fade < ?

Bram Stoker's Dracula is a great film.

Waterworld and The Postman are going to become cult classics like Blade Runner.

American Pie series... some funny parts, but if I want to see a comedy with titties, I'll watch Showgirls instead.

Sixteen 09-27-2003 07:31 PM

Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers, I love war movies. Especially WWII.

Kung Pow was the shiz, some of the parts there were so incredibly funny to me for some reason.

I like Stalag(sp) 17....

Hal Incandenza 09-27-2003 09:36 PM

Unpopular dislikes:
* Anything by Kevin Smith (with the possible exception of Clerks). Clumsy dialogue, awful direction, no idea what to do with either his camera or his actors.
* The Royal Tennenbaums is a weak, weak movie. It's shallow, manipulative, emotionally one-dimensional...I'll still see Wes Anderson's new one the day it comes out, though, because Rushmore and Bottle Rocket were both brilliant.
* American Pie was stupid and soulless from beginning to end.
* Kids sucked.

Unpopular likes:
* I really liked Matrix Reloaded, and I'm reeeaally looking forward to the third one.
* I thought Eyes Wide Shut was a fine movie. Kubrick and Paul Thomas Anderson have both used Tom Cruise perfectly: he's a truly awful actor, probably the worst major actor alive, but both directors used him for parts in which his character needed to be wooden/emotionally dead.
* Mars Attacks is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. Lukas Haas's speech at the end of the movie floors me every time.
* Anyone remember Joe vs. the Volcano? Great movie.

Solitude 09-27-2003 10:51 PM

Ack! Ack, ack ack ack. Ack Ack!

Batman976 09-27-2003 11:54 PM

Sweet, a fellow Kids hater. I thought that movie blew too. I don't hear too many people talking about it anymore, but when I do they usually like it.

Mars Attacks I definately need to see again. I'll probably just buy it someday.

Miserlou 09-28-2003 06:35 PM

My friends and I always looked down on Zoolander just because it looked like it was trying too hard to be funny, plus it just looked dumb.

Then I watched it. Will Farell's Mugatu character alone brightened up my day.

savethenaugs 09-28-2003 07:23 PM

Someone else likes Josie and the Pussycats? Amazing!

The fact that the Hot band-of-the-minute is named Dujour and none of the band members know what it means is great. And check out the lyrics (and Choreography!) to Back Door Lover.

Others:
Ninth Gate: Very underrated and poorly marketed as an action flick.

New Jersey trilogy: Fantastic.

Batman976 10-19-2003 06:04 PM

I gotta revive this thread because I just saw Bend It Like Beckham. This movie got an 87% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes, so I expected a decent flick. I was very disappointed. It was just another cliché sports movie with the same old overcoming the odds crap. Her parents don't agree with her throughout the whole movie, then all of a sudden they fully support her.

Blah... I guess it wasn't horrible, but I don't see myself seeing it again in the future.

phukraut 10-19-2003 06:57 PM

i don't know anyone personally who liked The Thin Red Line, but i think it's one of the best films ever made. go figure.

HugAPug 10-19-2003 07:23 PM

I thought Kill Bill was disappointing. I know this may not be that unpopular of an opinion, but around my friends it is. I didn't think it was bad, just not as great as it could have been.

maximusveritas 10-19-2003 07:38 PM

i like Thin Red Line and Eyes Wide Shut.
i dislike Boondock Saints and Citizen Kane.

lordjeebus 10-19-2003 08:42 PM

I thought Eyes Wide Shut was fabulous (I saw it unedited in Japan).
I also love Last Action Hero and Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.

Not a big fan of American History X.
I dislike The Usual Suspects and Saving Private Ryan.
The English Patient is the most boring movie ever made.

Jack Ruby 10-19-2003 08:59 PM

Well it's not realy an opinion, but I'm 18 and I've never seen a Star Wars movie, and when I mention that everyone looks at me like I'm a horrible penile disease or something.

Terminator 3 was ok, but no where near great.

Bend it like Beckham and My Big Fat Greek Wedding were stupid. I watched them and went "Haven't I see that before? And didn't it suck then too?"
Kill Bill was watchable as a pointless action movie, but it was no where near even close to being anything resembling a "masterpeice" which so many have called it.
I don't see what the big deal is about the Lord of the Rings. The first one was mind numblingly boring at many parts of it. The second didn't seem to have much to it, but at least it wasn't quite so boring.
I liked Joe Dirt and Dickie Roberts.
I hate Dumb and Dumber (yes, the first one), and both Ace Venturas.
I liked Josie and the Pussycats.
I can't stand Anime
I wonder how many people have bothered to read this far.
There's many more I'm sure but I can't think of them and I'll just go ahead and stop now. Have a safe trip home, always honk for the gremlins before going over a cattle guard.

Edit: Ooh, thought of another one. Batman Forever is my favorite of the series.

-I like jason takes manhatten.
-scarface is extremly overrated and started pacinos trend of overacting.
-last crusade is the best indiana jones movie.
-star wars is really overrated especially when examining the special editions
-of the charles bronson movies i've seen so far white buffalo was my favorite

JusticeForPhat:

I know how that feels..i knew it too. Same thing with "The Others"

Chit-chatting with new aquaintances, at parties and so on, i often manage to elaborate on the virtues of the Jim Carrey movie "Dumb and Dumber". Not as a comedy, but as a deep and enlightening experience that will benefit young and old... :D

I hated all the Porky's movies and the American Pie movies

The one I get made fun of the most for loving is Beastmaster

crayzeeredhead 11-04-2003 10:26 AM

ok here are a few I can't stand :
Scary movie - I just don't get it, some of it was too stupid so it was funny i guess?
I never saw any of the Godfather flicks!
Titanic does suck and I am a girl!!
Castaway- stunk!
Lord of the Rings is good only because i read the books!
I love alot of sci fi but star trek nemesis stunk although, the special effects rocked!
Joe Dirt was one of the dumbest movies I have ever seen!!
Jack Ass made me realize that society thinks immaturity is funny!
8 Mile---- ummmm who cared?
now some i liked that no one else seemed to:
Suger and spice dont ask why i just do!
Crouching tiger hidden dragon loved it !
I actually got blade runner!

I think you misread the title of this thread. With the exception of Sugar and Spice, I think a lot of people can agree with several things you said.

Stanley Kubrick is terribly, terribly overrated.

(commence beating)

I agree totally with CSflim. If I am really bored on a Saturday, and nothing is on tv, I will pop in one of the original trilogy tapes, and take a really great nap. I swear I have not made it through in one sitting ever without dozing off.

Have never seen even the trailer for those first three, but I did enjoy both Blade and the last sequel quite a bit.

Starship Troopers is the best movie EVER.
truly an atrocious adaptation of a classic novel that almost ranks up there with The Running Man on the "fucked up movies that threw away all of the good source material to start with" list.

i think Charlies Angels and Charlies Angels: Full Throttle are masterpieces.

they should be lauded as the greatest films ever...

wannabenakid247 11-05-2003 04:33 AM

I thought that the film 8 mile was really dissapointing.

The Usual Suspects, Seven, and the back to the future films are cool!

Spinach_Indeed 11-07-2003 10:39 PM

I hate "A Beautiful Mind" with a sheer, unrelenting passion. It was just overplayed till the point of physical pain. I liked "Josie and the Pussycats" simply for Alan Cummings. I love Alan Cummings.

Also, I'm not sure how many people dislike the film "Willard", but judging from reviews, it was not well liked. I loved it. I bought the Dvd, and even if the movie had sucked.. seeing Crispin Glover roll around in Mice with Women in Lingerie while Lip Syncing a Micheal Jackson cover would make it worth the 17 bucks.
