equalibriam a huge letdown?
ok- without spoiling the movie- I had it highly recomended to me, and the FX were good, but it seemed the plot was nothing but a bunch of dirivative crap, a hokey blend of 1984 meets brave new world meets thx1138 with a matrixey veneer. overall it was a huge letdown- anybody else agree or am I way off base?

You won't find much agreement on this board...everyone here seems to love it.
I agree with you however...the film SCREAMS derivative, derivative, DERIVATIVE! It wasn't all bad, but there is no way in hell that you could consider it to be "original" as so many people seem to have done. Also some of the action scenes were just plain idiotic! I mean Bale is tighly surrounded by about eight guys with M16-like guns, and he proceeds to...pistol whip them all! I mean, all one guy has to do is take a step back and let rip with his machine gun! At least in The Matrix, we are given a reason to suspend our belief. **Some minor spoliers follow** Second off all, the plot doesn't hold up to much scrutiny, and it was never really explained why the death of this leader was so vitally important. If all of these rebel groups were in hiding, just waiting to jump out and rebel (quite literally...the streets are flooded within seconds), surely there would have been an easier way to send a signal to unite these groups? Decent no-brainer film, with some very nice action sequences. But to call it original, or profound, is in my opinion, a bit misguided. EDIT: BTW, some moderator is probably going to leap down your throat for not doing a search!

I too recently saw this for the first time, after also hearing countless good things about. And yup, I basicaly agree it was a letdown for me, through and through. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, thought it had a couple great scenes, but plot wise I was expecting to hear a modest proposal on eating soylent babies to survive the upcomming trip through (insert generic FTL travel name here) about half way into the movie.

Watching Equalibriam for the plot is like watching The Matrix for the religious undertones.
The movie is made great by the fact that Bale's character does some moves that would make Neo go "Whoa".
