Asian Movies
"My Sassy Girl" was from the intriuging file info/praise from Sharereactor.com, After downloading it not expecting much, I'll say i been watching/downloading/buying asian movies ever since. Movies just seem so much more interesting from asia as they seem to work on story telling that some flashy graphics.
This thread is just to discuss your favorite asian movies. My personal favorties -My Sassy Girl-every romantic comedy i've watched has to be compared to this funny film http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/com...ssy/sassy.html Friend-nostagila about gradeschool friendships and gangwar fare , 4 friends grow up together and then disapate to different ways of life. Such a gangster movie without drivebuys or major gun battles http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/dra...nd/friend.html Versus-okay, this doesnt live up to the storyline praise earlier, but just the concept is great. Yakuza gangsters return to thier "cemetary" where they bury there kills, but the cemetary is a portal to hell which allows them to comeback to life. And thats just a glimse of the storyline. Gun Battles w/ zombies, swordplay and great (no wire) fighting. http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/act...us/versus.html Battle Royale-stated simply- a highschool class is selected to goto a island and ordered to kill eachother to minimize the future problems of disobiediant teenagers. http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/hor...tleroyale.html Attack the Gas Station- a group of teenagers attempy to rob a gas station, but when no money is found, they decide to spend the night, tending to the consumers and taking the cash for themselves. Hilarious movie w/ great characters eventhough the plot doesnt sound that interesting, it stays funny throughout the whole film http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/com...attackgas.html Infernal Affairs-2 moles, 2 organizations. Cop vs Gangleader type scenario, but there are moles on both sides and its up to the moles to decide which side wins http://www.kfccinema.com/reviews/dra...alaffairs.html |

I am also a big fan of asian cinema. Kong Kong cinema I love John Woo's middle 80s early 90s when he teamed up with Chow Yun Fat on such awesome movies like The Killer, A Better Tomorrow, Once a Thief and Hard Boiled.
Japanese I love Beat Takeshi movies that he directed and starred in like Hana-Bi and Violent Cop. My favorite director of the moment has to be the man, the myth Takashi Miike. The man is a movie a minute kind of director in 13 years he already has directed 60 films. What films though : Odishon, Dead or Alive series, Visitor Q and Ichi the Killer. Southeast asia I like the Pang Brothers. The Eye and Bangkok Dangerous are 2 that really encompass what's coming out of southeast asian cinema now,

I mentioned it in another thread, but my favorite is Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky. Exploding heads! Man in a meat grinder! Vice-Prison warden with a scissor-hook hand who keeps mints in his artificial eye! (I wonder if that particular combination of words has ever been used in a sentence before...)
Back when my cable company was still carrying IFC, I never missed a Zatoichi movie. They're all more or less the same, when you've seen enough of them, but it's still a thrill to see Ichi cut down the thugs five at a time. I don't think even Lone Wolf could kick his ass.

If you like old Japanese movies, get all of Akira Kurosawa's movies. Probably the biggest influence on western filmmaking from the East. Sanjuro and Seven Samurai are my personal favorites, but they are all really amazing films.

Almost everything i watch is Asian media..
I just checked out Takishi Miike's "happyness of the Katakuri's" and Wong Kai Fai's "Fulltime Killers". There are lots og htrat and not so great asian movies out there other than fight/ cop movies.. Takeshi Kitano directed and wrote a beautiful movie named "Kikujiro" and i think he might have even wreitten/directed the mildly known, quasi-english fiilm "Brother". I love beat Takeshi and think he is a really sweet older gentleman. He reminds me of my grandpa. I guess Shaolin Soccer got picked up by Miramax and should actually be in theaters now.. (hopefully subbed and not dubbed)..also I'm not sure of the director but there is a cantonese movie out called "Happy times" which is conversely pretty goddamn depressing. Depite this it's a pretty decent movie and has it's good spots.. but If you're on any anti depresants i'd avoid it I didnt go into detail on any of the movies i mentioned because If you are remotely interested in them i hope you would look them up. There is a magazine you can find in most bookstores next to 2600 called "Asian Cult Cinema".. that's a good place to start looking for new movies. Giant Robot magazine is a great place to see what is currently going on in asian cinemea and is where i first heard of "Better Luck Tomorrow" (which Cynthetiq is gonna hook me up with a copy hopefully in the future seeing as how he works for mtv and all). Also there are loads of places to order online no need to download movies when you can rent them, or buy them on DVD or VCD. I wont go into my long "downloading materials is the devel" speech because some of these movies just just cant get on any legal media avenues.. so i understand. If it wasnt for downloading and VCD's i would have never watched "Hero" or a whole score of films.. So.. good luck! |

Just to warn you Ganguro, "Better Luck Tomorrow" is an afterschool special at best.
"Hero" is amazing. I saw "pistol opera" recently and didn't like it that much. I have heard that Suicide Circle is worth seeing, and The Eye scared the shit out of me. It's nice to see some Korean and non-action films listed, because most of what people know (including me) of asian cinema is the Hong Kong action, and the over the top Japanese stuff (Battle Royale, Ichi the Killer etc) |

I just got done seeing A Better Tomorrow 1, 2, 3 back to back to back. Chow Yun Fat is the man. The coolest dude you've ever seen with dark shades, a trenchcoat, and dual berrettas coming after your ass.

i heard a Battlefield Baseball was being made or even already released.
Still hafta see A Better Tommarow trilogy, what should i expect? something like The Killer or Hardboiled? Just watched The Classic, dont see why people think its such a good romantic flick, the buildup was good but ending was disapointing.Or maybe i was expecting something like My Sassy Girl typa ending Also watch Ong Bak,and WOW, this guy is a amazing fighter, these fight scenes are AWESOME, he throws better knee's than Sagat himself. The stunts are just as cool, do yourself a favour and buy/borrow/download this at all cost even if u dont understand Thai |

I have to disagree with you on "Versus". That movie was aweful all the way. I almost turned it off several times through out the movie, but kept it on thinking it had to get better. It didn't. It was terrible and not even good for the "gore" if you can call it that.
Riki-Oh was great though, hilarious. I still have yet to see Battle Royale but i keep hearing good things. I'll have to see if i can rent it somewhere. If you need a good romantic comedy, my favorite of all time is Amelie. If you haven't checked it out yet, you need to. |

It's not even plot....hell, i like Riki-Oh. It was just badly acted, and the "special" effects were terrible. Dare I say Riki-Oh was better?
And the story itself was conveluted and there was twists for the sake of twists. I didn't care either way who won, and in the end, it didn't matter anyways. The runt was funny, but after awhile his schtick just got old. The crazy gangster and his long haired companion were better, but still couldn't save this crapfest. |

Musa The Warrior. If anyone hasn't seen this, I highly recommend it! Great action, great cinematography, great story. Just an all around great Korean film.

d horrible experiences with Korean Cinema..
:shudders: Shiri... why did i watch that movie? I like Akira Kurasawa's films, they tend to be a bit tooo long for me, 3+ hours of movie in black and white with subtitles moving at typical "japanese movie pacing" makes for a loooong movie. |

The old Jackie Chan films are great.
Police Story 1/2 Project A Drunken Master 1/2 Island of Fire Other good films, Once Upon a Time In China trilogy is very good. It shows that Jet Li actually has done good films. Also, Hitman. Japanese films, well I guess it's mostly Miike and Kitano films. Dead or Alive 1/2 City of Lost Souls Ichi The Killer Audition Brother Hana-Bi Boiling Point Violent Cop Battle Royale Sonatine Then there is the original Ringu, and 2, didn't like Ring 0 so much. |

my favourite korean movies :
* memento mori * sympathy for mr vengeance * friend * attack the gas station on the chinese movie-front : yesterday Hero arrived, stunning visuals, exhilirating sound, cool fights (to much wife-fu for my taste nevertheless) . the only problem for many wil be the narative structure, it is less captivating than e.g. crouching tiger. it was the first movie i could see on my new dts decoder, it was awesome. big difference with my dolby prologic from before. i pitty the neighbours :-)

I re-read my post, and probably mislead a bit. It's not an actual Korean film - it's a Hong Kong production. It is in Korean with english subtitles, but the story simply revolves around a group of Korean envoys in 1375 who go to China to make peace. They are, however, taken as spies and sent to the Gobi desert to die. The movie's main plot is them trying to get back to "Koryo". Highly recommended!

This thread has sparked new interest in me. I've wanted to see Battle Royale for a long time, but it's not available on DVD in region 1. Attack the Gas Station and Internal Affairs both seem pretty interesting. Are either of them available on R1 DVD? One of these days I'm going to have to watch The Killer too. That's another one I've been wanting to see for a long time.
The only movies mentioned in this thread that I've seen are Seven Samurai and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.

If y'all haven't seen it, check out Wild Zero! I CANNOT even begin to describe the greatness that is this movie. Seriously, it's by far the best rock-a-billy zombie movie I've seen in forever, plus it co-stars Guitar Wolf!!! That dude is the man!

The user comment by Sean Choi on that page is accurate. The movie doesn't try to reunite North and South, I wouldn't say there's "no substance" because of that. Anyhow, I bought a copy after just seeing it once. I enjoy watching it about every other month. |

i like the God of Gamblers series of movies, i don't know if any of you have heard of them, since you'd probably have to be in asia to see them, but the first one or two had chou yun fat. it usually has big poker tournaments to see who's the world #1 poker player and the main character usually has cool special abilities, like throwing cards like ninja stars and sleight of hand cheating tricks.

It is one of the ones where he is paired up with Samo Hung and Yuen Bao. Those three are so good together. |
