Just got done watching this and wow I was impressed.

Now I don't know much about the comic daredevil but I loved the movie... Although I thought Collin Farrel (is that right) as BullsEye stole every scene he was in.

edit... PLUS JENNIFER GARNER WAS FRIGGIN HOT!!!

Now this movie has got me thinking about comics again and getting back into them (or really into them to start, the only comic I ever really collected was The Darkness a WitchBlade spinoff) But i stopped collecting that years ago.

I was actually thinking of collecting daredevil and when I saw that Kevin Smith was involved with the comic that made me want to buy some even more.

My question? Is daredevil still a good comic? Does smith still write for Daredevil or any other comic? If not daredevil any suggestions. I kinda go for the darker comics not light puffy superman crap.

What about graphic novels? I belong to the Science Fiction Book Club and they have a 4 book set of "The Preacher" Graphic Novel... I have been wanting to get this set it sounds good, the first book in the series is Gone to Texas or something like that. has anyone read this? any good?

thats all for now... I have been very bored with my reading lately and want to try comics for a change of pace... I read ALOT. Use to read mostly horror books aka stephen king, koontz, saul but lately have been just picking anything up at the supermarket have been scifi books lately read a good book callled concquistador by SM Stirling I really enjoyed...

I thought it was ok, it does seem to be underated alot of places though.

I thought the movie was ok. They did a fantastic job of explaining and demonstrating DD's powers, I was really impressed by that - the 'radar' visuals were cool.

Jennifer Garner is incredibly hot, and bullseye was neat. Seing the Kingpin was also neat, I had always wondered how they would pull that one off and it was quite good.

I did think that the storyline was a bit weak though and they could have done a better job with it.

With your comic questions...

Smith wrote DD a few years ago and it was incredible! Buy the trade paperback. He's been writing various mini-series as of late. He did a two part DD mini in which the first part came out at the beginning of the year and the second has yet to come out. Right now Daredevil is written by Brian Micheal Bendis and with the artist currently on it, it's dark and very enjoyable. I suggest getting the trades from when Bendis started and then if you like them pick up the issues.

I agree, Bendis is ruling with DD now. If you want some comic recommendations, there's a previous thread with that very subject, try searching for it.

I think Kevin Smith bit off a bit more than he could chew. He has yet to finish the spider-man/black cat mini and the DD/bullseye mini. Plus, I think he was gonna do a black cat series, possibly a spider-man and batman/superman. Although those projects would be cool, he'd never be able to do them all.

Spiderman ruined the Daredevil movie, imo. It felt like during post production, they tried to make it a bit more like SM. The movie would of been much better if they'd let it have an 'r' rating, and explore the darker bits that they only brushed at in the movie.

Another great daredevil comic apperance is in Garth Ennis's run on the Punisher.

The R rated version of DareDevil is being released later this year in November or December, I believe. It should be the directors cut... which includes an entire new subplot and things. Should make it a bit more interesting, though I really liked the movie as it is now, too.

Is "R" rating more or less strict than "NC17" in the US?

In Ireland, it was easy. Movies were classified by age.

R is less strict in the states, although the lines are more and more blurred here every year. NC17 is generaly for explicit sex only here. You can find the word fuck sprinkled throughout pg-13 films here now, along with minor nudity.

definitely get into the daredevil comic. its one of the best stories going right now. Bendis is doing an awesome job with it. actually i like all of the titles he is writing. also definitely get those preacher trades....and the rest of them as well. your local comic shop should be able to get them for you. that is an awesome storyline. also if your looking for some good gritty type comics check out 100 bullets by azarello its one of the best books out there right now also look for global frequency by warren ellis.....or pretty much anything he is writing. hes doing alot of little mini series right now. i could go on forever but ill leave it at that. there are so many good titles right now.

Also, "R" allows those under 17 to be admitted with a person above 17 whereas NC17 does not. Not many theaters will play NC17 films, essentially providing the MPAA a "kiss of death" with which to commercially bomb movies it does not approve.

BTW i thought spiderman pretty much sucked. I hated the green goblin. for a while i thought i was watching a episode of the power rangers with that stupid costume they had him in.

Personally I thought this whole film was a comple and utter joke, it seemed as though they didn't know where exactly the story was going and ended up rushing everything.

DareDevil's conflict with himself being "the bad-guy" was underused, if this was central to the movie it COULD have turned out great. Electra served no purpose other than to get *SPOILER get killed by Bullseye SPOILER END*.

And though I though Ving played a good KingPin there is no excuse for KingPin to be played by a black man.

btw the fanboy references were a nice touch.

Watching this movie makes you appreciate just how good Spider-man is. I agree that the Electra character served no purpose at all. Her relationship with Dare Devil/Matt was not believable. The pacing of the film was also erratic and fighting appeared out of nowhere. BTW, when DD, Bullseye, Electra were fighting, how did they know exactly where on the rooftop each other would be?

I've definitely seen worse, but after Spider-man, the bar for superhero movies have risen for me.

What do you mean Ving played a good Kingpin? Michael Clark Duncan played Kingpin, and they have gotten a lot of slack for having a black man play the Kigpin, however they said themselves if they could have found someone better they would have. They searched high and low and Michael Clark Duncan was the best man for the job, even if his skin didn't match that of the comic book characters. It still worked just fine.

And yeah, there were a hell of a lot of fanboy references. The one thing I liked most, though, was that some of the scenes in the movie were taken directly from the comic book. It was a very nice touch.

I have to agree with Mr Deflok on this one. The movie was lame. I am a DD fan from way back. Loved the Frank Miller work on the book which the movie was loosely based upon. Really what they did wrong with the movie was get DD's motivation all wrong.

1) When Matt is blinded it is an accident. In the comics he is blinded saving an old man from getting hit by a car. Thus he goes from hero to victim.

2) In the comic Matt makes a solemn promise to his Dad to never use his fists to solve anything. This is one of the central conflicts to the character.

3) What is he in this movie? He is supposed to be a defense attorney providing help for those who can not afford of get the help they need. He must sometimes even defend those he has captured as DD. So explain that first courtroom scene to me. He looks like a DA to me....

4) The man is blind. Everyone is supposed to realize this. No one is supposed to suspect that he can see. Yet everytime you move to a different scene he is performing some stunt that is impossible for a blind man.

5) He's just not likeable. I want Bullseye to win much more. Why do we want Matt to win? He is arrogant and vindictive.

In answer to the original query in this thread: DD has often been a good comic and has also gotten odd at times. When it has good writers like Frank Miller and Kevin Smith it is great.

Sorry i was watching Pulp Fiction earlier and Ving was on my mind. And I know Elektra isn't 'dead', read the comics too, it was nice how she was 'killed' in the same way but really, she still served no purpose. To top it off it seemed as though the director was trying to rip-off quality shots from Alex Proyas' The Crow (a film which is infinitely superior).

I was disappointed with DD because it was too kiddy. The actors did a good job, but the overall picture didn't satisfy me.

I went into the movie expecting to be severely dissappointed. I just don't get into the whole superhero thing. Yet the movie turned out alright. I didn't take it seriously, so it was fun. The _movie_ itself wasn't good though. It all depends on how you go into it. And how much you lust for

The Electra character served no purpose, and was unbelievable. She thinks DD killed her dad so she goes after him, but the second she finds out it is Matt, the hatred disappears and she just *KNOWS* that he didn't do it. That is very messed up. She should have at least asked him about it. I don't get how she can be alive after her heart stopped though. I do know that she is alive because of the ending.

Like I said, it's a comic book movie, don't try and look at everything from a scientific / realistic point of view and just take it for what it is.
