How long can you go without T.V.?

Seriously. A day? A month? A year? If anyone can go without T.V. for a year (anyone who doesn't live in a shack in the woods) I'd be damn impressed.

But getting back to the point. Do you think you watch too much television? And even if you only watch it a few times a week? Could you go a month without watching any?

I've abstained from watching television a number of times. And everytime I've gotten more stuff done throughout the day. But I've never gone more than a couple weeks. And I always slip back into watching it at some point.

So am I the only couch potato at Tilted? Or do people find that they watch a bit too much of the tube during their average day?

Is it time to turn off the television?

(except for simpson reruns, I mean you gotta watch those, right? :D )

YourNeverThere 08-03-2003 11:08 PM

i could go for a while, i wouldnt want to though. T.V's alright but there is much better things to do

World's King 08-04-2003 12:44 AM

About 5 minutes.

Looften 08-04-2003 02:23 AM

I haven't watched T.V. in at least a month. I have one, and it's on occasionally, I just don't sit down to watch it. Now... if my computer was in the same room at the TV....

Sigh, too lazy to watch TV

more fire 08-04-2003 04:29 AM

I watch tv a lot. I'd be very bored if I didn't watch it for any considerable amount of time

SiN 08-04-2003 05:11 AM

<--strongly dislikes TV.

i won't watch it by choice really..i haven't for years
(excepting a couple times at my mom's house watching educational things on cable)

...once in a great while, if it happens to be on wherever i am, and something catches my eye, i'll glance at it for a few moments...

why no TV?

i haven't the attention span for it. it's not interactive enough.
(on the other hand, i can sit at my puter on the inet for hours...)
when i was a kid i'd watch sometimes...but usually only whilst also reading a book or something.

oh, and i *hate* commercials. and most everything they stand for.

so there :D

redravin40 08-04-2003 07:39 AM

I couldn't afford cable (and we only have five regular channels that are very hard to pick up) a couple of years ago.
By the time I could afford it, I just sent the money to TFP.
I haven't watched TV, except for movies on DVD when my kiddos come over, for over two years.
It doesn't feel like I missed very much.

MPower 08-04-2003 07:48 AM

I dint watch for a couple of weeks when i was in belize. of course i recorded a bunch of stuff and watched when i got back. does that count?

Kaos 08-04-2003 07:51 AM

Ever since I got the internet, I can go a lot longer without TV :D

tweekman 08-04-2003 07:59 AM

with the internet i can go for months without it, most the stuff on is crap anyways except for a few cartoons.

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-04-2003 08:12 AM

I know i couldn't last too long without TV seeing as how all i do is watch TV and go on the internet...........I have a boring life.

thebigk 08-04-2003 04:43 PM

I put a TV card in my computer so I wouldn't miss TV while surfing the net...I'm watching TV in the corner of my window right now! I feel awfully antsy when I go visit my friend who gets only 2 channels. But I survive. If I absolutely had to, I think I could last the year. :)

Ganguro 08-04-2003 05:10 PM

i havnet had cable for about a year and havent watched much TV because of it..
we only get abc and cbs.. so you can guess how much i'm in front of the box..
now.. we rent movies and go out to see movies, and im on the internet quite a bit.. but as far as TV goes.. i can take it or leave it. Almost everything seems kinda stupid on t.v. lately..

Mephisto2 08-04-2003 06:04 PM

A lifetime if need be.

I watch mostly documentaries, though I do confess to having a weak spot for the US show Law & Order.

My wife watches a lot, so I end up sitting in front of it more than I would like.

I noticed Jennifer Garner (sp?) was looking particularly scrumptious in that silly spy show Alias.

docbungle 08-04-2003 06:07 PM

Until the next big boxing match.

hambone 08-04-2003 07:34 PM

I don't have a tv currently. The closest I get is watching Daily Show clips online.

rogue49 08-04-2003 07:37 PM

I hardly watch TV anymore.

bundy 08-05-2003 04:24 AM

wow
tough question.

iŽd really love to be able to say that i could last ages... but i doubt i could.

but, of course, my excuse is that i do study Žinternational televisionŽ this semester... so i guess it all adds up as extra study.

(especially since a MASSIVE amount of Aussie TV is American - and thus international - no seriously).

tj2001cobra 08-05-2003 06:58 PM

I went to Colorado a couple of weeks ago. I didn't watch TV for about 10 days. It didn't bother me at all. I had my laptop but didn't use it except for offloading some pictures from our camera. It was alot harder not to have internet access than it was not to watch TV. I REALLY wanted to check my e-mail a few times but couldn't.

giblfiz 08-05-2003 07:16 PM

I really don't like TV, at least not as it is broadcast. In the last three months I have watched one episode of the simpsons (when I was at a freinds house)

On the other hand I have downloaded and watched A lot of Invader Zim, and Tick, and Watch a huge number of movies ect. On the whole I don't think its so hard to stop watching TV, you just have to do it.

cetacean 08-07-2003 02:41 PM

I keep it on most of the time when I am home, but don't really stare at it much... It's on right now.

bussman 08-07-2003 06:21 PM

A week maybe, because I have to have my stargate!

kel 08-07-2003 06:27 PM

Year

did it for two years in highschool

bobw 08-07-2003 06:47 PM

I once moved into a new apt. and after about 4 months a friend noticed my TV didn't work and I then realized I never even plugged it in...

-Ever- 08-07-2003 07:31 PM

Forever. However there will always be a TV in my house cause I love movies ;)

Speed_Gibson 08-07-2003 08:32 PM

forever as well....no TV in my apartment, just watch a few DVDs (and VHS movies via the the VCR through the AIW 7500 card) on my computer system. Could not live without my old time radio shows though, so much funnier/more entertaining/scarier than most any of that shit on TV now.
I have to endure cable at my job (as a hab tech) at times - a client likes to watch CNN, a channel that I fucking hate to look at for more than five seconds.

TRPF 08-12-2003 01:21 PM

Can go without TV for any period of time, as long as I have the computer. No computer, gotta have the TV.

Blu2e354 08-12-2003 05:12 PM

Probably a week tops. Gotta watch my sports

bobw 08-12-2003 05:15 PM

Football season... about 4 days

non football season... until football season

grayman 08-13-2003 05:48 AM

About all I use my tv for anymore is a receptacle for video game consoles and my dvd player and vcr. I will watch occasionally if it is on, but I don't watch anything religiously. I could probably go the year.

Silvy 08-13-2003 06:07 AM

I seldomly watch T.V. except for the news reports....

Every now and then (once a month?) I'll watch T.V. night after night for 2-3 days... but other than that: only if I walk by while its on.

I've got TFP, what do I need T.V. for?

agentsmith 08-13-2003 08:19 AM

I could prolly go for a month. Naturally, as of right now, I go every few days without TV.

Kyp 08-13-2003 11:34 AM

Would movies count as TV? I don't watch TV shows at all, but I do watch movies. Even so, I could easily go for a very very long time without watching a movie or TV or anything. Probably however long as I wanted, I have no all-powerful force that's drawing me to the television.

theinfamous 08-13-2003 01:29 PM

the tv's only on to watch sports and sports news. so...maybe a week

AntHackerX 08-13-2003 02:55 PM

I used to not watch TV at all. After I got DSL at my house, I was just in my room and was too lazy to get a coaxial cable to put into my room for Cable TV. But, now that I moved again, I finally got one and have watched a little bit of TV every now and then.

I can go without it for a while...

iktoweya 08-14-2003 12:11 AM

i havent seen TV in about 7 months unless video games count

Gman 08-14-2003 06:20 AM

I could probably go quite a long time. Thinking about it, I watch about 6-8 hours now (Off for summer) and all of the shows are just reruns I've seen before, so...

But would TV shows you download off the Internet count as TV?

BigGov 08-14-2003 06:29 AM

I've gone a week with zero TV, zero internet, nothing at all.

One week on vacation in Michigan. Jet ski, driving into town, screwing around with people, lots of fun, no need for anything else.

BubblegumTeflon 08-16-2003 01:03 AM

hehe three years and still going. . .

Tex 08-17-2003 04:49 PM

Not long. I watch too much sports to stay away from the T.V. I have MLB extra innings and NHL center ice yearly. Also, I watch Jay Leno pretty much every day. ;)
