Best movie of all time...

With thanks to h2g2fan for the thread idea...

Now, without setting up a poll that necessarily won't be inclusive enough, I was wondering if users would post their favourite movie.

I will tabulate the results and maintain a running total below.

My vote goes to CASABLANCA

Mr Mephisto

As I haven't seen many of the classics I have to go with LA Confidential... it has everything in it including a wonderful cast and memorable story...

Scarface

djtestudo 08-03-2003 06:49 PM

Favorite movie: Bull Durham

shred_head 08-03-2003 10:32 PM

Gotta say The Godfather. Schindler's List is incredible too, though of a completely different nature.

hotzot 08-03-2003 11:15 PM

too many to count.

viveleroi0 08-04-2003 06:18 PM

Fibrosa 08-04-2003 06:32 PM

Army of Darkness, hands down.

h2g2Fan 08-04-2003 06:49 PM

One vote for Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.

Petter Sellers is one of my heroes.

the best movie ever is....

The Big Lebowski

It's tough to choose. I'll have to say either Godfather, Part 2 or The Pianist.

stinkynutz 08-06-2003 11:43 AM

godfather

rogue49 08-06-2003 12:06 PM

Star Wars
the original

changed the genre, changed movie-making
changed marketing, changed product after-market
changed everything

and a great story to boot,
based on classic storytelling
and philosophies from centuries of development.

name one geek that hasn't been influenced by this movie.

Snoogans 08-06-2003 12:13 PM

Fight Club

or

Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back (wich incorporates all of the five movies)

Mr. Spacemonkey 08-06-2003 12:45 PM

dy156 08-06-2003 01:55 PM

Star wars was very influential, but my vote is for Empire Strikes Back, which was better.

nostalgic1 08-06-2003 05:08 PM

fight club is by far one of my favorite movies... followed very closely by donnie darko, and igby goes down.

the godfather movies are amazing though.

labob 08-06-2003 09:51 PM

My #1 Seven Samurai.... Everyone has taken from Kurosawa. Lucas, Spielberg & Tarantino to name a few.

My #2 Citzen Kane. Another brilliant, visionary film. Written & directed by a man ahead of his time.

baboora 08-06-2003 10:50 PM

Legends of the Fall

sadatx 08-07-2003 12:43 AM

In no particular order:

RULES OF THE GAME (Renior)
CITIZEN KANE (Welles)
AU HASARD BALTHAZAR (Bresson)
M (Lang)
THE WEDDING MARCH (von Stroheim)

Okay, so don't I feel like the movie snob of the bunch so far (there could be some more cineastes who have yet to post). So I'll throw in one more of my favortie movies to offset the snobbishness.

And that film is:

THE THREE AMIGOS

Why?

because,

"My little buttercup, has the sweetest-"

"eh smile, SMILE...."

XenuHubbard 08-07-2003 04:19 AM

Another vote for The Big Lebowski.

djflish 08-07-2003 10:04 AM

So many films, so little time. What to do!!

My votes go to (in no particular order):

Trainspotting
The Godfather
Life of Brian
and Toy Story

ghostF98 08-07-2003 10:59 AM

White Men Can't Jump

ghostF98 08-07-2003 11:00 AM

The existing thread is not even on the second page!

Mr Mephisto

Someones opinion of the best movie and their favorite movie may be two seperate things. You may think one movie is a great film with everything it needs, but you may enjoy watching another movie more. I do think that they can be considered 2 different topics, but it's not up for me to decide.

Mephisto2 08-08-2003 03:02 AM

Fair enough

Mr Mephisto

Daval 08-08-2003 05:36 AM

I consider them close enough that I've merged the threads....

floonine 08-08-2003 05:56 AM

Shawshank Redemption is the best in my opinion.
2nd. Donnie Darko
3rd. Run Lola Run

theinfamous 08-08-2003 10:26 AM

for me, definitely seven samurai.

edmos1 08-08-2003 02:56 PM

Silence of the Lambs
One Flew over the Cukoos nest
Goodfellas

best movie trilogy godfather

Mephisto2 08-08-2003 04:20 PM

OK, finally tabulated the results.

Where people entered MULTIPLE votes, I picked the one I thought most appropriate. For example, in a list that includes the Godfather and Toy Story, I took that as a vote for Godfather.

I can't believe some of the movies some of you picked.

White Men Can't Jump?!
The BEST movie of all time?!!!

Some of you need to get out more often.

Sheesh...

:)

Mr Mephisto

PS - Feel free to continue voting.

Thank you. I had been waiting for someone to post accordingly.

As for the best film, I would have to vote for Hitchcock's Vertigo with the following films tied for second:
- Felini's 8 1/2
- Kurosawa's Seven Samurai
- Kubrick's Dr. Strangelove
- Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc
- Coppola's The Godfather
- Ozu's Tokyo Story
- Godard's Breathless
- Welles' Citizen Kane
- Lang's Metropolis

Pellaz 08-08-2003 05:43 PM

The Usual Suspects, for me, I think.

BigGov 08-09-2003 12:36 AM

This one is hard. I'll have to go with South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. The funniest movie I've ever seen.

the next few are: Scarface, Snatch, Saving Private Ryan, Dogma, Office Space, and Jackass: The Movie.

Now THIS is more like it.

Whilst I don't agree that Vertigo should be number one, I'm both surprised and delighted you include Tokyo Story.

Had it not been for the entirely personal and sentimental reasons I picked Casablanca, this would have been my choice.

Mr Mephisto

castex 08-09-2003 05:57 AM

Goodfellas is a supreme achievement. Worth inclusion here for the continuous shot where they go for dinner through the kitchen, alone.

2001 is just fabulous. A veritable masterpiece.

I'd also like to mention Unforgiven. Clint's finest hour; Gene Hackman is on top form, and, well, it's intense.

My wife would like to nominate Cinema Paradiso and Delicatessen. She'd vote herself, but we can't work out how to set up another account.

Oh, and Diva. What a treat!

castex 08-09-2003 05:59 AM

What about The Cook, the Thief, his Wife and her Lover?
Right, I'll shut up.

The Fifth Element

The Shawshank Redemption
The Parent Trap (1998)
Princess Mononoke

They are my personal favourite movies.

I would say that The Shawshank Redemption is the greatest movie to exist to date and that Princess Mononoke is the greatest anime movie to exist to date.

The Parent Trap (1998) is the movie that I most enjoy watching. I have watched it more times than any other movie. I have seen it over 50 times, spread out over a few years.

I find I usually enjoy watching chick flicks or family flicks more than other movies. The reason for this is probably because action, drama, suspense movies and such are only effective the first and second time watching. After that, the buildups to the climatic endings don't work.

Beltruckus 08-09-2003 09:56 PM

American Beauty
Fight Club
Shawshank Redemption
