The ending of Gangs of New York
 

I rented the DVD and was not able to finish it. I saw the movie up to the point where the Butcher decided to hold the fights on the barge at the waterfront. Can someone please fill me in on basics of what happened after that. I assume Amsterdam killed the Butcher at some point. Thanks.

I'll tell you what happened.
The biggest fucking anti-climax ever and an ending that re-enforced my feelings that this was in fact a god awful film. A waste of time bar the performance of DDL, he was excellent.

Ok from what I remember, they go out for their big battle. But at the same time a riot breaks out and a massive mob is going about lynching ethnic minorites in the city. The navy takes action and begins firing cannonballs into the city in order to quell the mobs.
Which results in the battle between DiCaprios gang and Day-Lewis' gang basically being pushed aside. Through all the debris and dust DiCaprio eventually stabs and kills Day Lewis. That's it I think.
A LOAD OF FUCKING BOLLOCKS. I want my 3 hours back, or however long that film was, seemed like an eternity.

Just saw the movie the other night and i must say it was pretty bad ending but the historic stuff was just so damn coool... And gotta love irish people branding different weapons of old sorts hehe

Yeah I saw the movie back when it came out in theaters and was disappointed by the ending. I thought it really sucked personally. But in a way it was good because at the end the two sides' differences didn't matter because the Army stepped in and took over anyway. It was still a let down ending though.
