Gangs Of New York
This film copped alot of flack from some of the critics, but i thought it was awesome in every concievable manner. This is what cinema is all about. Daniel Day- Lewis is a freaking legend, the best actor of our generation in my opinion. I wonder if he went back to being a simple shoe maker like he was for some years before the film started.

I really enjoyed it to....
|
Everyone that I know disliked it, but I thought I was interesting.

I really enjoyed it, but I probably had the benefit of lowered expectations after all the bad reviews and such.
|
one of these days i will see this movie...leo needs more roles, honestly, i want to see him evolve as an actor, i think he has potential, once he gets out of his teenheartthrob phase
|
Have you guys read the book? It's non-fiction, but intriguing as hell. An interesting read, and frightening too. Some of those people were just... brutal.
|
I enjoyed it, although it clearly went a tad too long. The music was great, Daniel-Day-Lewis was great, and the sets and costumes were pretty cool. It also had a bit of a Clockwork Orange vibe going.

Was really looking forward to this. Purchased dvd sat and watched. The story and setting was good but felt a little let down seeing as it has been so long in the making. The end battle wasnt up to much either. Still worth having though some good performances.

Actually the book Gangs of New York by Herbert Asbury is a collection of lore, myth and lies....and that's why it's so great. It's hardly non-fiction. The same is true, I think of Scorsese's movie. It's surreal and unbelievable, and succeeds wonderfully as long as you don't start thinking it's actually historical.
I remember when I first saw it in December, I called it a "New York fantasia," and I still think that's the best term for it. |
Everyone who likes this movie justifies it by saying repeatedly, "Daniel-Day Lewis was great!!!" Unfortunately, whenever he wasn't on screen it was long, boring and got bogged down whenever Diaz and DiCaprio were in a scene together.

Fuckin' badass.
|
I definitely agree that Lewis made this movie. That has to be the best performance I have seen in a long time. It was just close enough to being over-the-top to remain powerful without going into silly. The final confrontation between the gangs was a bit weak, as was the duel between leo and lewis. But all in all, good movie, definitely better than that shitpile of a movie Chicago. God knows who the producers of that POS fucked to get the Oscar awards.

All the people that I know hated it. I however am a big history buff so I found this movie incredibly interesting. I knew nothing about this pivitol point in american history until I watched this movie. I question why it isn't in any of the history books I've ever read.
|
It could have been better if it were about an hour shorter. As it was there was a lot that happened in it that just prolonged everything and it got tiresome to me after a while. I don't really think it was a bad movie, but I don't think it was that great, either.

Daniel Day Lewis did a fantastic job. However, I felt that this was one of those "Braveheart" movies, where the ending should have been sooner and the good guy should have died. Instead, the DiCaprio character lives and the movie is drags on to it's weak finale.

LOved the movie!!! Ive watched it 5 times so far...

i thought it was great it did go for a while but it was awesome

This film is whole worlds away from most of the trash you find at movie theatres with 'just-add-water' plots and carbon copyed talentless pseudo model/actors (Oi, i know what your thinking, Leo has some talent). It also richly portrayed a time in history inconcievable today. And the whole agruement about it being to long and drawn out is probably fair enough for many peoples taste in film. I think it makes it better, it makes it a more real world- we arnt just following Leo around on another Titanic adventure. A lot of people said the same thing about The Thin Red Line. I guess it depends on what you want from a film. Im just thankful that it didnt get turned into an annoying teen flick- scrapped the old folk music for some rap, chucked in a predictable sidekick etc. The opening shot when they are walking through the catacombs, with the crude scary music, while arming themselves is alone more interesting and different to anything ive seen in ages. |
This movie had the potential to be awesome, but as mentioned, it was much too long. And the ending was horrible.
I don't understand why American ships would start blasting cannonballs into the heart of NYC. I know they were trying to control the gangs, but the whole mass destruction of the city was just stupid, in my opinion. |
I thought it was a great set piece. The plot was pretty generic mobster fair with nothing to write home about. But the scenery, costumes, dialect, and cinematography, and music all kicked ass.

Good movie. It was interesting to learn something about New York that I hadn't already known.
