Another MTV Exploitation - Spider Man
has anybody seen the new spider-man series they show on MTV? they show two episodes friday on the ten spot and unlike the spidey cartoons before it, this one is in CGI.
spidey/peter parkers voice is done by neil patrick harris (doogie howser) flash tompson - ian ziering (90210) mary jane - lisa loeb and they use other notable actors to voice minor roles. for example, the rapper eve was on an episode playing a theif that falls in love with flash. if youve seen it, what do you guys think? i think its a lot more darker than any other spider man series ever shown. im afraid that because its on MTV and its on friday night, its gonna be just another mtv animation casualty.

I liked the two episodes I saw...I mean, Bendis is working on it, so it can't be all bad. I hope that Friday night doesn't kill it.

I think it's pretty good, the celebrity voices is a bit distracting though. I spend half the time wondering where I've heard that voice before. I hope they get a couple seasons out of it instead of becoming discouraged and scrapping the whole thing.

I actually think that it is quite good. Wierd as hell that it is on Mtv tho'. I like the fact that they use the cel-shading on the cgi so that it retains that "comic book" look. I also think that the "pg-13" type storylines (mild swearing, sexual tension), is better than any of the animated Spidey incarnations of old. It will be really cool if they run it long enough to get to the Venom/Carnage plotline.

With the above comments, I'll re-examine the show next time it's on, as I admitably only half watched it the first time. All the same though, I thought it was horrible. I've never been a big fan of any of the spiderman cartoons, though. Plus, cell shaded cgi makes me want to retch on my own.

Hmm. I hadn't heard about this. Maybe I'll give it a look, even though I try to keep my TV off of that channel as much as possible.

interesting... I didn't see this on the schedule, and when I looked at the financials I thought it was from the movie. I'll try to catch it when it airs, or get some screeners delivered to my office.
I do think that it looks like it should appear more on SpikeTV, or even a cross polination like they did with Ren & Stimpy on MTV and Nickolodeon.

I'm really enjoying it. The computer animation helps give Spidey the moves he could never show on TV before. In the 90's show, he crawled along the wall like a snail. But now, he can go fast enough to keep up with a car.
I also love the extra little details they throw in whenever he's swinging around. For example, the 1st Electro episode. He flips off a lightpost, does a little twirly spin in the air, swings around another post, and goes into his classic hanging upside down pose. It made this Spidey fan very happy. |
