Today I learned that my mind's eye + GRRM's prose are about 80 times better at coming up with scary shit than HBO is. The zombie attack was WAY creepier in my head, to the point I was uncomfortable as it approached in the episode, and then it just looked stupid. The treatment of the white walkers overall have not been nearly creepy enough since the first episode. Oh well at least I was able to sleep.

Oh, and, come on HBO, flex your uncensoredness and give us wooden sword in eye-socket...that scene was pretty lamed out as well, relative to the book's awesomesauce.

Still happy, and trying not to be 'that guy', but those two scenes were highlights of good writing for me so I was sad to see them present but weak.

I agree with you about the Water Dancer vs Everybody scene, it was dumbed down for the tv. I was looking forward to that scene since I heard there was going to be an HBO series. Syrio fucked some dudes up in the book and all he did was pop a few guards on the head with a stick. In the book he broke one guard's leg and jammed the sword into a guard's FACE. That's the awesomesauce I want to see. I guess the FX department didn't have the budget for the wooden stick applied to face scene.

The whole episode let me down and it's my least favorite ep so far. This was GRRM's ep and it wasn't as good as other episodes. I can kinda see why they are advancing the way they are, they want the two big ending plot points (Spoiler: Ned dying and the dragons being born ) to end at the same time. Go out with a big bang.

They have been doing so good with the show, let's not fuck up the end.

*****

I think I need to watch it again, to see if it stays low on the list for me.

I thought the episode was all right. It was another of those transition episodes. I'm expecting some heavy, heavy shit for eps. 9 and 10.

Sure, Syrio's fight scene was downplayed a bit (in graphic violence only, really), but Drogo's was fucking fantastic! This does make me wonder now, though. Why keep the one "clean," but let the other be so gory? Maybe they thought the wooden sword thing was limited in terms of believability and realism. I dunno. It's a bit odd when you compare the two and ask why the difference.

On the plus side, the Stone Crows, Burned Men, Black Ears, etc., were well done in look and disposition. I hope they show them in battle with some fucked-up shit.

Arya is going to be one to watch now.

Also REAL ACTUAL SPOILER ABOUT ANOTHER CHARACTER DYING SERIOUSLY DON'T READ Spoiler: the wound Drogo got is WAY too minor for him to die from. I seem to remember a flap of chest hanging open.

Lame.

How do you guys think they'll handle the ALSO REAL ACTUAL SPOILER ABOUT PERSON DYING Spoiler: stillborn half dragon? That could be pretty gross

Seriously??? You read the damn spoiler after I marked it spoiler??? I thought I was doing good by marking it SPOILER. BG is right, you guys are killing cats around here. (Also, the damn TITLE of the thread has spoiler in it, knuckleheads).

*Sigh*, now I feel bad I spoiled it for people.

TK, I agree with you with your OMFG SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER Spoiler: Drogo's boo-boo, but I think it was more how it was taken care of (meds wise) that got him. Even a small cut can kill when infected..

I'm downloading the ep today, I think that I let my dislike of how they handled the water dance scene cloud my view of the ep. I'm going to come back with more opinions on SPOILER Spoiler: Will, Noodle, if you are reading this... this is why shows get spoiled for you. STOP LOOKING AT SPOILER TAGS!

I disagree. Spoiler: You'd be surprised by what could kill you in the absence of modern medicine and hygiene. Plus the injury looks pretty deep.

I'm just comparing it to the book's version:

Spoiler: "The cut was wide but shallow, his left nipple was gone, and a flap of bloody flesh and skin dangled from his chest like a wet rag."

Sure enough, but maybe the producers didn't want to Spoiler: make Drogo look too gory, considering his eye-candy quotient for the female viewers. Remember, this is television, not fantasy fiction. It's a different ball of wax.

My friend (who hates fantasy) was all "WTF They killed ned?" and was actually pissed about it. He was also pissed that Ned admitted treason before his death. He (and I) liked the exchange between the spider and Ned in the black cells.

Late Lord Frey, he was awesome even if he wasn't as old as he needed to be.

When they had ned on the steps, a small part of me was (if they fuck this up, it's the death of the series). Ned died and all was well (well for us).

Disliked how they handled Tyron's part in the battle. It's fine for those that haven't read the books, but I wanted to see the dwarf fuck some people up. The logistics of it couldn't be done, so I understand why they did it. Still don't like it tho.

*****

This Site is awesome.

It's become really obvious in this episode how they've gone the route of rich drama over sweeping action. The battles are happening offscreen. This is understandable considering the budgetary limitations, but at the same time, if you had more action sequences, there would be less running time for the drama.

Offscreen action of big battles like that is so Shakespearean. Though I'm sure modern audiences might find it a bit lame. Sucks to be them. The drama's the thing.

I'm glad John Snow wasn't there to see Ned falsely admit to treason. I have a feeling John's rose-colored glasses view of his father will remain as a guiding moral light for him continuing into the future.

And if I remember correctly, the capture of Jamie Lannister happened mostly "off screen" in the book as well.

The finale was great! It closed off the first sequence of the story while setting up the pieces of the next like a true epic.

My one concern was alleviated tonight: the dragons look awesome!

I'm already looking forward to Season Two. It's only months away!

I just read the book, dont know how it stacks up against the TV series and dont want to spoil anyone's viewing

I quite liked it, although the huge cast of characters can be a bit dizzying. I like how in most fantasy books there are very clear cut "good guys" and "evil lords and lesser races who follow them"... while the characters in this book are at least human and dont easily fall into categories of "good" and "bad"

That said, I utterly detest Catelyn Stark and her sister. The only two characters I could find nothing sympathetic in. Even the insipid Sansa, as much as she is annoying, is basically good hearted (and 12 years old to be fair to her)

Im not saying that I like Joffrey, but he has been poisoned all his life.

Catelyn is a manipulative, evil, self righteous, bitch

Joffrey's mother is a manipulative, evil, bitch. At least she doesnt lie to herself and claim that she is innocent..
