Been to a movie premiere?

How many of you have ever been to a movie premiere and was it worth it?

I am working in Orange County this summer(I got to school in Chicago) and I want to attend the Tomb Raider 2 premiere since I, like many people in this world, have a fascination with Angelina Jolie. I think I will go regardless just to say I went, but I wanted to know what to expect. It is going to be held at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood if that makes any difference.

I appreciate any advice or stories about this. Thanks.

No movies ever premiere down here, its so sad.

My sister went to the Sixth Sense premiere, as it was in Philly. She's very into Bruce and it was her sixteenth, so my mom got it done. They said they totally didn't fit in; it was clear that everyone there was all about premieres and my mother and sister were much more at home with "the help" than the viewers. I don't know if that's how Mann's does it, since I've only ever flown through California.

premieres...nope i always go to press screeners or junkets. Junkets are the best, but rare. Screeners...well it's just a thank you to the industry.

I have a screener pass for Tomb Raider 2 sitting on my desk. Paramount is a sister company so we get these once a month usually.

I used to hit a lot of press screenings, but my job changed, so I lost touch with the people who could get me those. I've been to one official premiere - City Slickers II in Atlanta. It was kind of fun, but wasn't an experience I'm anxious to repeat or one that I'd suggest doing whatever you can to attend.

The highlight for me actually took place about 100 yards away from the theater, when I saw a motorcade stop and out stepped Jimmy Carter, who was all dressed up in dude ranch clothes. Gotta love an ex-president with a sense of humor!

We went to the premier of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" a few years back.

Unfortunately, they gave out too many tickets so they had to run the film twice and we got into the second showing.

I'll never forget Francis Ford Coppola coming out of the theater and saying to us in line, "It's a wierd movie".

Thanks Francis, you should know.

Yes

I went to the premier of Mr. Holand's Opus in Portland, OR. I was in highschool and many of my band friends were in it during the filiming and they got me a pass. Apparantly Richard Dreyfus is a jerk in real life. The premier was ok as movies go. It was free. Too bad I had to see that one.

Hmm, never been to one but it sounds interesting.

How does one go about getting in? I mean, do you have to know someone or can you just buy a pass? It would definitely be a unique experience.

hambone 07-14-2003 06:05 PM

I would also like to know how does one go about getting in? I had a couple of leads through friends, but they fell through. I think I will just end up going and waiting around outside just to say I did it. Its gotta be more interesting than anything back home...

I went to the premiere of Termanator 3, which was very exciting and cool. The afterparty consited of a bunch of drink serving robots and weird flying radio/voice-controlled planes and boats and cars and weird robots and fire and music. Oh yeah, the entire cast was there and Arnold rode around on a motor bike for a while but I was buisy stuffing the decorations and food into my pockets.

Thanks for the replies. However, could anyone tell me some more information about the premiere? Like about how early should I get there.

The reason I ask is I had tried to go to ComiCon in San Diego today since Angelina Jolie was supposed to be signing autographs. I had no idea what it was all about, but we still got there 2 hours early and had to wait in an over a mile long line, and that was just to get in the building. She was supposed to sign fom 10-11 and the place opened at 10. Needless to say I did not even get in the building and was only halfway at like 10:30.

I don't have a ticket to this premiere so I was going to go stand around outside to watch. Will I even be able to see anything, or is this another lost cause? Thanks for any quick responses, the premiere is Monday.

i dont know, man. I went to the sneak preview of X-Men, and it was crowded as all hell.

wiseguy1100 07-22-2003 07:24 PM

I have been to a lot of premieres here in DC through a local organization. They are usually a lot of fun - sometimes they will give out freebies like soundtracks, T-shirts, etc.

I would definitely recommend getting there at least 45 min before showtime - just because you have a ticket does not normally guarantee admission.

hambone 07-22-2003 09:41 PM

In case anyone cares, I did end up going to the premiere. And I got to be within 10 feet of Angelina Jolie, so it was most definitely worth it.

twiztid 07-22-2003 10:54 PM

Nope, never been to one. Probably has something to do with my location, seeing as how small towns dont draw movie premieres. =\

leon2345 07-22-2003 10:56 PM

I've been to a showing of Made where Favreau and Vaughn fielded some questions. I actually sat next to the fonz if you can believe it. I also went to a screening of Bubba Ho-tep where Campbell introduced the film. That was a real treat seeing how that film is still far from being released

Well not entirely sure how you'd classify this, but went to Big Apple Anime Fest last august, ended up seeing the premiere of the Cowboy Bebop movie and the world premiere of Millenium Actress. The former was really quite cool for anyone into that sort of thing. After the screening, the Director (Watanabe), the character designer, and the artist who did the music (Yoko Kanno) fielded questions for damn near an hour. The second movie, the producer was there, but this was the first screening anywhere in the world. Probably one of the more entertaining pieces of film I've yet to see, anime or otherwise. See it if you have the chance, and can stand the Anime style.

Granted this might not be the highest profile premiere ever, the experience was pretty awesome. The Marriot on Times Square was significantly discounted, so we were able to stay pretty affordably. Then the movies were shown in the Leows at the Virgin store. Pretty great experience for my first time in NYC :)

I just went to a "Seabiscuit" premiere in Boise, Idaho just last week. It was attended by the Producer and Gary Stevens (jockey; actor) who are both from Boise.

Not the same as a full-blown premiere but still fun.

Yeah, I suspect that the little films like that are a lot more fun. I went to the Toxic avenger 4 premiere (hell it was across the street, why not?) and it was pretty cool, a very relaxed atmosphere, and some giveaways. got some stuff signed by the director too.
