Jay and Silent Bob Movies?
I've seen Mallrats (a classic) and Jay and Silent Bob strike back, and I've been interested in seeing they're other films, such as Clerks, Chasing Amy and Dogma..I've heard Dogma is really good but I'm not sure about the others. Which are good?
|
If you're really religous, dogma=bad, if you're a homophobe or close minded chasing amy=bad, and if you are a total loser, clerks=bad. Really, these movies are all quite fun, just take them for what they are, movies. All of them are very quoteable, and i own them all. :)
|
*edit go buy/rent them all NOW. They are all really good. Most people havent seen chasing amy though, for some odd reason, so get some friends together, pop some popcorn, and go for it
|
Well, IMO, they all kick ass. I love Kevin Smith's movies, I think they're hilarious. And Dogma is actually a really smart film. If you liked those two, you'll love em all.
|
I second crow-daw, they are all great and worth watching. They all bring somehting a little bit different to the table.
|
I was first attracted to the series because of all the jokes, but Chasing Amy became my favorite, just because it's such a great and warm movie. Come to think of it, it's very funny, too.
|
Dogma was my Kevin Smith starter film. Now I'm hooked and have seen 'em all. It's still my favorite, though.
|
Listern to everyone's advice here and see them all.
Get a big tub of popcorn, some nachos and a big gulp, take the phone off the hook and watch them all in order. 1. Clerks 2. Mallrats 3. Chasing Amy 4. Dogma 5. Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back (In case you were not aware of the order of release) J&SBSB makes a lot more sense if you watch them all in order. Dogma is still the best IMHO. |
they are all pretty amazing - i agree w/ God of Thunder though; watch them in order. it isn't critical, but you will see the evolution of Kevin Smith and his characters.

i seen the jay n silent bob strike back, it was pretty damn hilarious.
especially the "i own the clit, i'm the ruler of the clit" etc... |
Excellent films, all. They're for a pretty specific audience though. With repeated viewings, you start to notice more and more things in the background, throwaway lines, sight gags, and the films get even better.
I only hope Smith can keep up the good work with his next films. They will DEFINTELY be different, and are most likely going to appeal to a different group of people. Any time you change from a format that was very popular among a cult following, you risk alienating them while still not appealing to the mainstream. -Mikey |
The Dude, watch the other movies, then watch J&SB again. There are a lot of in-jokes :)
|
All good movies. I have to say I was a bigger fan of his when I was going through my teen-angst phase... I still certainly recommend seen all of his movies but I recommend Chasing Amy the strongest as it has a firmer plot and is not sooo over the top. Though, I guess that is what Kevin Smith is good at... If I were to order them in most-favorite to least-favorite:
1. Chasing Amy 2. Mallrats 3. Clerks 4. Dogma 5. J&SB |
THey are all awesome movies...even with BenLo in them...Kevin Smith must be a genius to make not only watchable moveis with him in it, but great movies with that Daredevil-killing, wooden acting himbo!!!
Jay and Silent Bob Rule!!!!!!! |
A move about Jay and Silent Bob!? Who'd pay to see that!?
|
All great to watch 'cause you can enjoy the plot or just go for the silly fuckin' antics of Jay and Bob. Either way you're golden.
Then, watch 'em all on DVD with commentary. Even better. |
I have all of them on DVD. One of the best purchases that I've made. Definitely worth seeing.
|
Haven't seen them all yet. Dogma--didn't like. J&SB strike back-hysterical, I watch it everytime it comes on a movie channel....
|
I love them all, except Clerks. I just never could get into it no matter how many times I watch it.
I do enjoy the cartoons however. |
They are all great, I haven't seen Jay and Silent Bob strike back yet, but I will soon. Very soon. I hope.
yeah, they're all very funny and all, but they are all smart humor, if y'all know what i mean by that. They all are funny, but the humor makes sense to smart people, and the movies also are kinda moving, they make you think... a lot. Chasing Amy is probably my favorite |
Clerks and Mallrats are my favorites. Both are classics.
Chasing Amy was great but a little different. I throughly enjoyed Dogma, but not quite as much as Clerks or Mallrats. Jay and Silent Bob, while probably the weakest of the series is still a very good flick and worth a couple viewings. |
Hmm since you've never seen clerks I think some or Chasing Amy I think some of those Jay And Silent Bob Strikes back jokes don't really make sense yet..eh!?
|
Anyone see "vulgar", done by kevin smith. That movie is pretty fucked up, seriously, but pretty good too, i dont want to ruin it though, anyone got any feedback on it? My dvd version is really bad, horrible synch, everything is off, still a good movie though.

Worth watching, but don't go in under false pretenses or you may be disappointed. |
Interesting that a number of people here don't like Dogma or it's their least favorite.
Having been raised through catholic schools, it was very funny to me and made some of the best jokes about Catholic history. Of course God at the end....now that was funny allby itselft. |

I also have Vulgar, it's so messed up.
I'd recommend all of Kevin Smith's movies. Chasing Amy is my favorite though. Has anyone seen Drawing Flies? Smith was producer on that, its fairly good, a little odd though. |
Just like almost everyone else, I would to recommend all of them, preferably in order. And yes JASBSB is all dick and fart jokes but it is funny as hell. My favorite line from that movie or any other has to be " What the F@#K is the internet?"
|
Dogma's pretty good, but my favorites are Clerks and Mallrats. As the series went on, it looked more like a Hollywood-type movie instead of just raw humor. The first few movies weren't created with much money (Mallrats cost a good amount of money, but it shouldn't of. Kevin Smith says so in the commentary)
|
I own every one of them, all great movies...
|
I own all of them, finally...and Mallrats just went down in price, after I paid $25 for it. :( But the commentary on Mallrats is by far the funniest commentary on any DVD I have heard so far...It's basically 2 hours of Affleck abuse! :)
|
Clerks is my all-time favorite Kevin Smith movie. Working in a gas/grocery mart for 5 years probably makes me a bit biased. Everything in that movie is sooo true:) . As I understand it, Kevin himself worked in one while he was in college.
I have numerous "clerk" type stories i could share, that rank right up there with those in the movie, lol... I really enjoyed Chasing Amy alot, and loved the star wars/kkk analogy scene and the archie comics = gay scene... the other movies were a bit too "cheesy" as far as I am concerned but still found them enjoyable. I just saw a preview of kevin smiths' new film jersey girl errr whatever it's called, and it looks boring... |
"Ever have your asshole licked by a fat man in an overcoat" --Jay, Jay and Silent Bob Strikes Back.
One of the funniest quotes from any movie. PERIOD!! I own them all on VHS and DVD, excellent films from a director that is unique and utterly cool. Peace |
I think Clerks is the best one.
|
Don't forget when you watch jay and silent bob strike back to try and count the references to the previous kevin smith movies.
|
If you love Mallrats and Jay and Bob Strike Back, then you'll love Clerks and Dogma. They're both filled with the same type of humor and lots of Jay and Bob goodness.
As far as Chasing Amy goes, its one of my personal favorite movies. Its way different from Kevin Smith's other films. Check it out (and ya Jay and Bob have a small role, Bob gets a killer speech). |
i personally enjoyed chasing amy the least (except for the star wars/kkk joke - golden). my favourite is Dogma, so many little jokes that you'll miss if you're not paying attention. J&SBSB is a crackup, if you've seen the rest, but yes, it's not quite up there with the rest of them, plot wise
|
Personally, I think you can pass on Chasing Amy, but rent Clerks NOW!
Then watch Dogma :D |
Heh, the reply before me was number 37.
The commentaries are cool as hell to listen to on all his movies. |
