Funny or Action-packed

Ok, TFP. I need your help. I am sick and tired of watching romantic comedies that end up making me cry (even if they are stupid). I need FUNNY or ACTION, or both, movie ideas. Keep in mind that I watch these alone, so nothing horror. Suspense is ok, as long as I can go to sleep after watching it.

Noodle has already recommended The Transporter, which I have now added to my list.

What can you add to my Netflix list? A short description will be most helpful, just in case I never heard of it.

But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my daughter go now, that'll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don't, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.

Funny and action-packed:
Big Trouble in Little China - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Trucker Jack Burton encounters martial arts and mystical Chinese men in San Francisco, while helping his friend rescue his kidnapped fiance.

Action-packed and a bit funny:
Showdown in Little Tokyo - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Two police detectives use martial arts to go after the Yakuza that have taken over the drug empire in Little Tokyo.

If you want credible and believable action watch the Bourne trilogy and Rescue Dawn. If you want stupid OTT action then I recommend Shoot 'Em Up, Knight and Day and probably (as I haven't watched them) the Cranks and Transporters.

Worthwhile comedies from the last few years, I suggest, are Sideways, Bad Santa, Burn After Reading, Cemetery Junction, Observe and Report and Perrier's Bounty. The World's Fastest Indian isn't really a comedy but there are many funny scenes and anyone who watches it will feel excellent afterwards.

If you can stand to watch animation then check out Bolt, How to Train Your Dragon and Ratatouille - they all have plenty of good action and comedy.

Disclaimer - by action I wasn't sure if you meant violence action or just fast moving non drama type action. So I would read up on these and see if they fall within your interest zone.

Kill Bill Vol 1 and 2

The Italian Job (new version)

Fight Club

More funny than action: A Fish Called Wanda and Big Trouble, both of which have huge casts, and work as great farces.

+1 for Big Trouble in Little China. Nothing But Trouble with Chevy Chase is also good.

Just saw Knight and Day in theaters and found it to be enjoyable as long as you ignore how stupid Cameron Diaz is.

John Candy is absolutely hilarious and Who's Harry Crumb? and The Great Outdoors are classics.

If you like sight gags (they kill me), Leslie Nielsen can't be beat in Wrongfully Accused, Spy Hard, and The Naked Gun trilogy.

I also recommend The Tenth Kingdom. It's really long, but it's a thoroughly enjoyable mishmash of fairy tales and odd comedy ('frige that endlessly dispenses beer, Midas touch gone wrong, mushrooms that sing you to sleep, etc). It's girl approved and has some great actors.

For action-packed and with suspense, I highly recommend The Bourne Trilogy:
  • The Bourne Identity (2002)
  • The Bourne Supremacy (2004)
  • The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

As oliver mentioned above, these films seem more serious and less campy/over-the-top. The critics tended to like them too, which is a big deal with action films.

I want to rewatch them actually, which is huge. I seldom rewatch films.

Good that you mentioned Naked Gun and Leslie Nielsen: reminds me of Airplane! which is also recommended. That and its sequel (Airplane II: The Sequel) lose some of their hilarity out of context with the Airport films but they're still very funny. Also heaps of absurd visual gags in Top Secret! The silly spoof genre's something of a lost art now with all these rancid cynical zero effort Scary Movie/Date Movie/Epic Movies stinking up the box office.

Don't forget Val Kilmer's other funny film, Real Genius.

About a super smart fourteen year old going to college to work with lasers, meets some weird and funny characters, and pops the world's largest jiffy pop popcorn ball.
