Female Doctor (Who)!

There was an article making its way around the internet a little while back about how there was, for a brief time, a Doctor who was a woman (played by Joanna Lumley in "Doctor Who and the Curse of Fatal Death"). I thought this was kinda awesome.

After Matt Smith's done a few wonderful seasons, bringing more richness to the character and having a wonderful death, why couldn't The Doctor regenerate as a woman?

I keep thinking about someone like Kate Winslet taking on the part and bringing her incredible dramatic talent along with the quirkiness from Eternal Sunshine. Someone else I spoke to about this recommended Miranda Otto, which is another interesting choice.

Thoughts?

As long as they don't mess with the Police Box!

To be clear, Curse of the Fatal Death was a parody (Rowan Atkinson was the Master!) created for a charity special but I wouldn't mind..

One aspect of Doctor Who I like is that the canon is a bit loose and you can mix things up for the sake of a good story. He has his 12th and final regeneration coming soon and how ballsy would it be to emphasize its importance with a gender change?

Overall it wouldn't be popular but you could make that female iteration a short but very memorable stint and really rock the mythology.

Kirsten Scott Thomas? Noomie Rapace? I don't know...Some one with a lot of natural character and presence. Perhaps an unknown from the British Theatre scene.

I think the Master was Johnathan Pryce (the whole episode is available on Youtube: and ).

As I understand it, in Romana's regeneration sequence she changed gender at least once, so it is theoretically possible within existing canon.

Do people still watch Dr Who? Blimey

Having a female lead wouldnt both me - but it isnt especially new or special (Alias, Buffy, Dark Angel, etc...)

I think the show really has to decide if its a kids show or an adult show. It will never compete with US shows in terms of budget, so if it doesnt want to always be a cult show famed for the bad special effects, I guess they do have to take some chances with it.

I'd make Dave Lister into the new Dr Who myself

The last series with Matt Smith as the doctor and Moffat at the helm was one of the best of the series. If you've not seen it and you enjoyed Doctor Who in the past, you'll almost certainly enjoy this last series.

The show is a dark fairy tale for the family, meaning it has some stuff for kids and some for adults.

Would that make River Song a lesbian? thats hot :)

They could do a really risque Torchwood crossover episode. Ah, the possibilities.

Jack Harkness does Dr. Who.....I love it. Actually there doesnt seem to be anything in the lore that would preclude a female, just being referred to as "The Doctor" seems to fit as well. Of course, Jack would do the Doctor in any gender incarnation, I would think....

Something about making the Doctor a woman seems like it would just be pandering or doing it for the sake of provoking controversy. I don't know that it would add anything to the story to make the Doctor a woman other than spending a lot of episode time going over how crazy it is that she's a woman now, and isn't that new and different. That does not strike me as particularly compelling, compared to the rest of what makes Dr. Who an entertaining series.

To me it seems like saying "What if we made the next James Bond JAMIE Bond." Sure, you could do it, but would it add anything to the series? For my money, no it wouldn't. The companions (at least in the new series, I can't say much for the old) are far from damsels in distress. There are plenty of strong female characters, and making the iconic Doctor one of them just for the sake of making him a female seems silly to me.
