I absolutely loathe them. Their music gives me a headache and I rage quit the radio when they come on. It's just not my type of music at all. Welcome to TFP btw!!!!!!!!!

Evanescense isn't "enough" for me, although it was a good start for me to ultimately find the genre Gothic Metal, something like Nightwish. I like the more operatic lead vocals I find there, as well as the stronger background accompaniment.
If you don't know them, try:

Musically Evanescence is just another goth pop band; lyrically they're junior high melodrama. Amy Lee isn't a great vocalist, but she's strong and distinctive, and the only thing that sets Evanescence apart.

It all sounds the same to me, which is fine. They have a formula that apparently works. It just so happens to sound like pretty emo vocals over top of generic metal (or "metalvator music" or "smooth metal," if you will).
I liked them when I heard their song the first few times.

"Fallen" spent some heavy rotation time on my CD player when it first came out. I wasn't as into anything after that, to be honest.

Similarly, I enjoyed Evanescence when they first came out, but it was really just a gateway to what I think are better bands like the already mentioned Nightwish (with Tarja Turunen, not so much with the new singer) and Lacuna Coil.
Here's some Lacuna Coil for you since Nightwish was already posted...

Glad you liked the Nightwish! And, because I have to pimp them out every chance I can...
...here's Van Canto performing a Nightwish cover. The thing that makes this awesome is that it is only voices and drums. No guitar, no bass, no keyboard. Van Canto has been my favorite band for the last 14 months.
