SNL Sketches Turned into Movies
I really like the MacGruber sketch, but I'm a bit afraid to see the movie.
Most SNL sketches are pretty funny for 2 minutes, but not so much for 2 hours, in my opinion. The ones I've seen: The Blues Brothers... definitely the best one. Very funny. Wayne's World... also good. Quite funny, but didn't warrant a sequel. Wayne's World 2... not good. Tried to capitalize on the success of the first, obviously, but fell far short for me. Also cost more to make and grossed far less $. Coneheads... this one I like. I know it's stupid, but it made me laugh. Superstar... I hated this one. I'm not even sure why I watched it as I never liked Mary Katherine Gallagher even as a sketch. It's Pat... I liked the Pat sketch a lot, but the movie bit, imo. Ones I haven't seen: Stuart Saves His Family... I never liked this sketch. A Night at the Roxbury... one of my favorite sketches of it's SNL time period, and I'm afraid a full 2 hours would ruin it. Blues Brothers 2000 The Ladies Man... really? MacGruber... another favorite sketch I think I'd grow to hate over the span of a movie. There are probably more that I'm forgetting about... I think Astronaut Jones might make a reasonably funny movie, and I'd have definitely watched a Church Lady movie or a Perfect Cheer movie or a Judy Miller movie. What do you think? Do SNL sketches make good movies? Which sketches do you think should be, or should have been, made into movies? |
Spoiler: MacGruber is basically a giant turd joke. Save your $30 and rent a Leslie Nielsen comedy like Repossessed or Police Squad.

The Blues Brothers and Wayne's World are the only ones on that list worth watching.
These were the only two that didn't feel like the premise had to be stretched to make it fit into 90 mins. I can't think of any SNL sketches that would work as a full film. Perhaps they might have had some luck doing an ensemble piece like a Monty Python film. Maybe. |
Actually, I enjoyed every one of the movies you mentioned, except three:
I didn't know they made a Pat movie. I might have to look into it, though it doesn't sound promising. I have no idea what Stuart Saves His Family is... I didn't know MacGruber is based off of an SNL skit. I'm guessing it's a newer skit and there's a reason I quit watching SNL about five years ago. |
addressing Punk: I quit watching SNL, circa 1995, so I've probably lost more of the context here than anyone.
Of the films I have seen that evolved from SNL skits, though, I liked 'em all, though the jokes and gags wore thin right after the first viewing, more often than not. That's probably not saying much, as I've only watched three of them in their entirety. Plus, towards Charlatan, did you not enjoy Coneheads? But, that said, if you are a fan of comedy, I wouldn't steer you away from any of these films: The Blues Brothers (1980) Coneheads (1993) The Ladies Man (2000) That last film, though, I didn't initially link to being an SNL skit until I saw that Will Ferrell was in the film as well. |
To be honest, I didn't like the Coneheads as a sketch, so the idea of 90 minutes of what I already find annoying, not so much.

I think, in general, guys tend to like these movies more than chicks.
I can't stand Will Ferrell at all... on SNL or anywhere else. The only things he's done that I've liked are the movie Dick (in which he had a pretty small part) and the cartoon The Oblongs... that was a very funny cartoon. Oh, and the perfect cheer sketch! Repossessed... now that's a great, funny movie! |
