Cuz Sauron would have given them the evil eye, making them drop from the sky. Or the Nazgul would've fought them in the air. Think of it like choppers coming in to pick up the marines in the venezuelan jungle, after the marines had to walk in on foot for 20 miles to blow up the druglord's den and rescue the president's daughter.
