Who's your favorite X-Man?

I gotta go with Nightcrawler. I dunno why, I just always liked the blue-furred kraut.

(Only ten options with the poll, so if it's "other," add it it your post.)

Took a while to get the poll up

And there's like over 9000 past and present members of the X-Men.

Tough one. So tough, in fact, I decided to limit myself only to the 9 poll options. There are a few different reasons why an X-Man might be a favorite too. There are the characters with cool powers, or with good personalities, and there are also the characters that have other, *ahem*, qualities.

I voted Nightcrawler, because I've always liked his power and he's a pretty interesting character in general.... but it sure was tempting to vote for Kitty Pryde! Of course, there's also Emma Frost.........

Beast has been on board since day one, and has been the soul and moral compass of the team all along. His brilliance is only matched by his compassion and reason. He also has to deal with a far less human appearance than most other X-Men (at least the main ones). Like Data on Star Trek, despite the fact he seems inhuman, he actually represents the best in people. If I have a favorite X-person, it's going to be Beast.

The Reforms

It's always hard for me to whittle down a definitive list for anything; I usually choose a "best of" listing, with explanations for each (it's just my nature of indecisiveness and never developing that "playing favourites" gene).

With that pre-face, I gotta go with:

1.) Gambit (Remy LeBeau) - He has more facets to his personality and mutant power acumen than initially-stated for the early portion of his comic's character birth. I admired his Southern-gentleman persona and ideals, despite being associated with an organization named The Guild of Thieves. His continued on/off relationship with Rogue was always a highly-intriguing subplot, in my opinion. His mutant ability to charge any object's potential energy into a kinetic, volatile, and explosive projectile makes him highly versatile in terms of fighting capabilites. Additionally, he further learned how to charge his own body into a "fast-moving" near-concussive-like shielding. Despite being a mutant, he is a highly-specialized combatant, skilled immensely with a Bo Staff. He has also been speculated to be one of the 10 strongest X-Men of all-time.

2.) Nightcrawler (Kurt Wagner) - A favourite character of mine nearly throughout the entire serialization of the comic, (and subsequent TV/film series) despite being an obvious minor character (he was usually reserved in background roles until the story warranted his prominence). But, besides rarely seeing the soft-spoken Bavarian orphan, he was beyond captivating. He definitely has my favourite mutant power from the multitude of mutant variations featured in the entire Marvel Universe. What's more: He is an accomplished swordsman (dating back from his Circus-days as a fencer) and combines his natural deftness with his acrobatic abilities (along with a prehensile tail), and combined with his ability to teleport at will, Nightcrawler is a fierce fighter to square off against. Though, he would much prefer not to fight at all, as he is a natural pacificist more often than not, even so far as being a priest before (and after) his stints with the X-Men. *BAMF* What more do you need to say?

3.) Beast (Dr. Henry "Hank" McCoy) - I guess I have a "predilection" towards amiable and thoughtful, blue-furred, misunderstood, acrobatic, "beastly-looking" characters (must stem early-on from my affection towards the Cookie Monster, tho I have no idea if he is nearly as agile). I suppose "Hank" appealed to my intellectual nature, first-and-foremost, for he was always quick-witted with words and even offered sound advice whenever he was featured. But he's also like the "Blue Hulk" in a way, what with his superhuman strength, stamina, & speed, (plus near-unmatched dexterity and agility) but with a more-preserved awareness and intellect when pressed into combat. This little excerpt most appropriately delves into the great personality that was bestowed upon his character, and why I so heavily-gravitated toward it: Despite his ongoing battle with the demons of loneliness and rejection, he was an inveterate prankster and wit, and besides his brutish exterior, Beast was the most literate and eloquent of the X-Men, possessing a million-dollar vocabulary. Henry was every bit a human being plagued by duality: man/beast; genius/sports star; gentle giant/feral aggressor. From Beast to "Best"; He has it all.

Gambit. I like his personality (I'm a sucker for a character with a Cajun accent) and his superpowers. I remember in the cartoon he was escaping some weird mutant camp and picked up a handful of metal nuts to charge with energy. He then used those nuts to blow up a big fucking robot. Let me boil that down. His nuts can blow up big fucking robots.

'nuff said.

Wolverine.

He's tv reason I got into them in the first place. I don't have a large collection of comics but his limited series from the mid-80s is the pride of it.

I didn't bother seeing the movie though. The third X-men movie killed my interest.

Wolverine all the way, for me. Those claws. Also, there's just something about reading the *snikt* that gets to me. Even more so than Nightcrawler's *bamf*

Wolverine's the only X-Men action figure I bought as a teen in the early 80's that I would put with my Star Wars action figures in my Darth Vader carrying case.

Wolverine is one of the few times I can say I liked him before he was cool. I remember as a kid loving the Wolverine/Kitty Pryde mini-series and wanting buy more with him in it.

The problem I have now is that he's written as this indestructable killing machine when I remember him as this tough as nails dude who constantly got his ass kicked but just kept coming.

I remember how badass I thought this cover was as a kid.

Wolverine is the only one of them who isn't sugary sweet. He's the Batman of the group (the original, nasty, almost evil Batman). One of the most powerful stories ever was the 16 yo mutant whose power manifested as the obliteration of organic tissue... he killed everyone near him. It was uncontrollable, and they sent in Wolverine to take care of him. He showed up with a 6-pack, sat down with the kid, talked to him for awhile, and then killed him. Wolverine has some depth... the others a comic book characters.

I said Nightcrawler, since he has always been one of my tops: I love his love of adventure, his joy in the hero's life with all its ups and downs, his searches for love and acceptance, and his compassion and dedication. Plus I've always wished I could teleport!

That said, I would be lying if I didn't admit that there are a couple of other characters I love equally:

Kitty Pryde: I love her heart. I love her dedication. I love her ability to push through being scared shitless to do whatever she has to. I love the way she struggles with her life challenges. I love that she has the perspicacity to mourn for what her life deprives her of without being bogged down by depression. And yes, I love that she was arguably the first "out" Jewish superhero, who really claimed her Jewish identity.

Colossus: Awesome power. Tortured soul. I love his philosophical angst about his life and his goals. I love his loyalty and dedication. And I love how someone with such an aggressively physical power and body is so introspective, and loves art and poetry, and skinny Jewish girls....

Wolverine: OK, everybody digs Wolvie. I know, it's so unoriginal. But the epic of the gai-jin ronin who really wants to be samurai is so enticing to me, it's just such a wonderful literary motif....

Close seconds: Storm, Jean Grey, Dazzler, Longshot, and Banshee.

Why isn't Gambit in the poll?! He's everybody's favorite! (Including mine.)

He turns inanimate objects in to flaming, purple balls of energy! You add in that infamous charm that picked him up the hottest mutant in the series (Rogue), rugged good looks, and a rebellious side and he's the prime choice for favorite.

All the girls want him, all the guys want to be him!
_______

I would also like to add my favorite Brotherhood character:

Juggernaut! He's super tough and mean...

That's all he needs.

From the poll list it's too hard to choose! Think I'd have to go with other. From all of them I don't think I could choose from Sage, Cannonball and Iceman. Gambit used to be my favourite, pretty much for all the reasons everyone else has said, and I loved Rogue too, but then she started annoying me. Pretty much when she left him in Antarctica. I used to be on an X-Men forum where it was suggested that people put their Rogue action figures in the freezer... I love Sage because she's so detached and calm. She bounces off Bishop pretty well in X-Treme X-Men. She's just a bit cool. Cannonball is awesome - passionate and hot headed and he has a lovely accent. Iceman fascinated me when his secondary mutation hit. He has some great one liners too. But speaking of one-liners...

< ...it's pretty obvious where my real loyalties lie...

Originally it was Gambit. His suave style and the way he always hit on every single woman... I just loved it.

However one that I felt always got looked over, but had a much more complex and interesting background (originally at least) was Bishop.

Bishop came from a dystopia future in which the X-Men no longer existed. The force had been wiped out, and mutants were on a constant struggle for survival. In this struggle, and the stories told by his grand-mother about the X-Men, Bishop is arguably more dedicated to the X-Men struggle than any of the actual X-Men.

More intriguingly, before the '90s comic book writers fucked it up, was the reason Bishop hated (and tried to kill) Gambit. It was a huge question of Gambit's future betrayal of the X-Men which leads to their defeat. What does Bishop know about the future, but wouldn't mention in fear of further altering the future? How could the guy everyone loves be the one who gets them all killed?

Unfortunately he came along relatively late in the series, and as we all know the '90s were horrid for comic characters.
