Okay,male actors that have lived and acted in the last 25 years,men and ladies both participate please,as this is not just about looks nor sex....although if you ladies wish to rate the actor for looks and sexiness first,and then ability next?
I will start with my choice of Tom Hanks,he is pretty versatile in his roles,and does well in them I think.
Your choice and thoughts?

Denzel Washington, then Morgan Freeman

Johnny Depp... lot of his film I didn't like... but DAMN! that man can act. He seems to choose his parts to stretch his abilities.

John Travolta. He makes unbelievable characters believable, and delivers some wonderful lines doing so.


Dlish picked another of the all-time best in Morgan Freeman.

Matt fucking Damon.

Leonardo DiCaprio. Everyone hated him when his career started but now he's gonna be recognized in the same league as Gibson, Freeman, Hanks, Washington, etc. Just about every movie that Leo is in is great. He's easily my favorite actor.

while my hate factor of dicaprio has diminished somewhat, i dont see him in the ilk of the Freemans or Nicholsons. sure, his acting has improved, but basketball diaries is what ill remember him for.

no way. Leo's movies are almost always fluff, and he lacks real emotion and the X factor that the greats have. It's all an opinion and people are welcome to like who they wish, but he just doesn't do it for me..

So the question is male actors that one likes? I've never seen a Daniel Day-Lewis performance I didn't really appreciate. Gandhi, Lightness of Being, Mohicans, Innocence, Boxer, Gangs of New York, Jack and Rose, and of course There Will be Blood were all surprisingly rich performances.

I'll see anything Robert Duvall acts in......

Morgan Freeman,now there is also a very fine actor!

Daniel Day Lewis indeed.

Al Pacino.

Anthony Hopkins.

Sean Penn.

Kevin Spacey.

Edward Norton.

I also have a soft spot for Kevin Kline, 'cause he just makes me laugh.

Jeff Bridges is the most underrated actor going. He is always fascinating to watch.

How come Jim Carrey has only won a golden globe, no emmy's or nuthin'! I like the guy! I think he's funny!

Nice call on edward norton. I've never seen a movie with him in it I didn't like.
Ryan Reynold's is a good actor, I think he needs to branch out more from comedy.

Fluff???????? His performances in these movies were downright amazing. I don't see how anybody can watch The Aviator or The Departed and then say he lacks emotion.

He may not be the greatest actor, but my favorite will always be Kevin Kline, ever since the first time I saw him as The Pirate King in the Joseph Papp "Pirates of Penzance", and solidified with "A Fish Called Wanda".

Leonardo D to me is only getting better with age, heck look at where Tom Hanks started and where he is now? Leo has potential to be one of the greats, he gets better with every movie, and I cant WAIT to see him in Shutter Island

Johnny Depp, wow what he can do with a role

Robert Duvall, I simply love this man, I think my favorite performance was in The Apostle

Anthony Hopkins, I would watch this man no matter what he did

Morgan Freeman, same as the above

Alan Rickman, this man to me is in a category all his own and will be my number 1 pick always. The only movie I will never watch again of his is Awfully Big Adventure, because he did such a good job at making me feel absolutely dirty/disgusting/icky

Philip Seymour Hoffman is a genius in my opinion. From Twister to Cold Mountain to Capote, his characters get me going.

John Cusack, I've followed him from the beginning, I was 15 when he did his first movie, and I've loved him ever since

Mel Gibson, I remember the first time I saw him, it was the Australian movie he did called Tim in 1979, man it was a great performance. Say what you will about him as a "person" that man can make me "feel" like almost no other ( cept for Alan)

To round out my list of favs, I need to include, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Matt Dillon (another I've followed since my teenage years), Christopher Walken, Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Bacon (his role in Taking Chance just made me fall in love with him all over again), and last but certainly not least Tim Curry!!!

The only movie in that list that wasn't fluff was The Departed..and even then, the only reason it worked out so well was because of Damon and Nicholson. Blood Diamond was horrid. Catch Me if You Can was a snooze fest, Gangs of New York was overdone, The Aviator was another snooze fest. This isn't always the actors fault, of course, but an ok movie can become a good movie with the help of good acting. For me, it's just that I don't really get a sense of the emotional weight carried out by other actors that have been mentioned here. When I watch a movie with Leo in it, everything feels forced.. when I mention a good actor, it's usually because the emotion and settings feel natural.

:shrug: just a difference of opinion I guess.

Johnny Depp - I'm not a huge fan of his movies, but he does give an all-out performance every time...

I know there's more...just can't name them at the moment.

Tony Leung - he has subtle, yet intense emotion.
Gallen Lo - powerful actor. I'll always remember him as the selfless hero.
Stephen Chow - like-no-other brand of slap stick comedy. And he always make people cheer for him, even when he's a jack ass.
Brad Pitt - I think he has better comedy potential than he does in dramas. I loved him in Burn After Reading, the Oceans franchise, and Inglorious Basterds. Not so much for the rest.
Will Smith...I like his movies. He's fun to watch.
Clint Eastwood - bad ass.
Morgan Freeman - the man commands attention and respect in every scene he's in.
Denzel Washington - great, great actor.
Jim Carrey - my first VHS video was a gift from my uncle, and it was Ace Ventura - Pet Detective. Then I saw Dumb and Dumber (on tv).
Ian McKellen - Gandalf
Patrick Stewart - Professor X
Heath Ledger - The Joker.

I just saw a clip on the award show Scream 2009, of DiCaprio's new horror/mystery movie, "Shutter Island" that I think will bring out more depth than he's shown me so far.
It looks like a creepy flick. Pretty cool.

Martin Lawrence - A stretch, I know. But he's funny as hell.

Anyschways,

I'm a big Kurt Russell fan. Escape from New York / L.A., Big Trouble in Little China, and Soldier are awesome campy fun. He's a great actor when you need someone who's believably blue collar or when you need a brooding seasoned badass.

He was also excellent in Captain Ron... I'll never forget the line, "Kitty, ease up on my winch!"

Campy action/adventure films are my favorite.

I think Kurt Russell is in a secret tough guy actors cult with (the former) Patrick Swayze and Ron Perlman.

Robert Deniro and Al Pacino's performances in Heat are also up there with Movies Worth Clubbing A Baby Seal Over.

I'd like to voice my support for Leonardo DiCaprio. I've seen all but three or four of his films and there's not one where you could accuse him of not trying his absolute hardest. Same goes for Tom Cruise, who hasn't been mentioned (no matter what opinions of his private life may be) - always brings his A Game.

Matt Damon has massive appeal, huge credibility and can do an action, comedy and drama - an impressive all-rounder.

Hopkins and Day-Lewis are my two favourite living actors - I don't think I'll see better acting than in There Will Be Blood as long as I live.

Two male stars to watch closely over the next few years are, in my opinion, are Ryan Gosling and Emile Hirsch. They impressed me massively in Half Nelson and Into the Wild respectively.
