Stargate Universe

Starts tomorrow night (October 2nd). Anyone else interested/excited?

I'm pretty curious and hope it turns out to be a good show. I find it a bit bitter sweet tho since I felt this new series came at the expense of Stargate Atlantis, which i thought was doing pretty good. I feel they ended Stargate Atlantis way too soon, and they didn't really wrap up anything. I don't really see the new show finishing anything from Atlantis which should get a movie or two to finishing things up like SG:1 did with "ark of truth" and "continuum".

It looks like they'll be showing the episodes on Hulu and syfy.com the next day after airing. Hulu - Stargate Universe

I liked Atlantis as well, particulary Dr Rodney McKay. He was the best character. I will be checking out SGU.....

I will check it out; I wasn't fond of the previous incarnations of the Stargate franchise, but SGU seems a little deeper than "the weekly pew pew".

Yes, I'll be watching.

I miss Stargate and getting my weekly dose of hot nerd action (Dr. Rodney McKay and Dr. Daniel Jackson, thank you very much).

I'll watch, but I'm reserving judgment. If it seems like they're trying too hard to nail down the grittiness of BSG, I'll switch over to something else.

It has a lot to live up to. I'm definitely going to give it a chance. I don't expect to LOVE it in the beginning simply because it's not SG1. I like the cast though. I've been a Robert Carlyle fan for a long time. I'm glad they let him keep his accent for the role.

Hopefully this fills the hole that's been there since Atlantis and BSG ended.

I never bothered with the other TV versions but I did enjoy the movie.

I liked the pilot a lot; especially the story of the ship itself. Elie is the character I'll be following most intently. I'm least interested in the military/political power struggle and I'm glad they killed off Spoiler: the senator because he would have been right in the middle of it.

Moving forward as they go through a different gate each week reminds me of the old Dungeons and Dragons cartoon where these kids had a box/portal that they used to try and get back home.

I wonder what Rush REALLY did through the commui-stone-amagig.

I highly recommend that you watch SG1 and Atlantis Fresnelly. SG1 may have started in 1997 or so but it's still relevant and enjoyable unlike some other shows from the time period that I've been watching.

The Freaky Friday stones switch your conscious with someone connected to the matching stone. Not only did Rush enter that guy, That guy entered Dr. Rush. For all we know, He could still be the guy he switched with. I doubt it though, he seemed awfully normal. I'm not sure what he really did or was said while he was switched. I want to believe him but I think it's going to take someone else using the stone to confirm it. I really dislike the whole power struggle thing. I hated it when they did it in SG1 and Atlantis and it's not any better in Universe. I was surprised with the Senator. He really didn't seem like the kind of person to do that. I was expecting to absolutely hate him for the rest of the season.

There really wasn't a lot to judge the show on in my opinion. I expected that it would take a few episodes to get introduced to everyone and actually start liking people. I'm actually glad Eli isn't seen as the genius loser like early Daniel and Rodney were. It's cool that he and Lt. Scot seem to get along.

I hope they introduce a bad guy soon.

The bad guy seems to be the black guy from the brig. (or whatever you call planetside military jail)

I liked it well enough.

I'd like to like Rush better, but maybe it will take a few episodes for that to happen.

The military "hero" guy seems too young to be the badass type.

I'm actually watching the pilot of the original right now. I loved Atlantis but never watched the original for some reason dispite the fact that I loved Richard Dean Anderson in MacGyver.
I'll probably watch SGU when it comes out on DVD.

I liked it. They seem to have actually learned from BSG (mostly on the atmosphere of the space ships) and the stargates but didn't copy them in blatant/annoying way. My only gripe is T.J./Terra (I think her name is, the blond medic)...she hasn't had a ton of show time but her acting seems bad, and wtf was with her hair and make-up? She looked like she was on her way to a Ms. America pageant. Her hair was way too frilly and perfect for a military chick who'd just been through a battle and an evacuation.

It wasn't on par with the ground-breaking BSG, but it did break out of the "canned" (IMO) writing of SG1 and SGA. I'll watch it again.

After watching it a couple times i gotta say they did a pretty good job. Its different enough to feel fresh without being too campy. The second episode will probably be a better one to judge how the rest of the series will go. I'm not sure how i feel about there literally being a ticking clock for off-world missions.. we'll see...

Looks like there were a couple different ships connected to the Destiny. A couple shuttle things (like the one with that door they couldn't get closed) and a ship that almost looks like a whitestar from Babylon 5.

I found it kinda odd that they introduced a new form of FTL travel. Hyperspace, worm hole drive, and now this. The sheath of blue stuff around the ship looks pretty neat tho.

I really hope they don't turn Elie into a buffoon like they did with Hiro on Heroes. I appreciate some comic relief but so far the character is resourceful, competant and confident. It would sour things for me if he is turned into a clumsy clown.

Holy fuck. I'm currently listening to an interview of Robert Carlyle on Q. I had no idea he was doing this. I'm all over this show now. I'm totally sold. (Yeah, I'm a big fan of his.)

Ok, first off, that (Air, pt. II) was a great episode, and the song at the end was pretty apropos.

Now, what the hell was that podship at the very end?
Was that the project Lou Diamond Phillips was working on?

Only recently did I begin watching SG1 and Atlantis. A work conflict will do that.
As with a few others, Carlyle's presence compelled me to watch. Thus far, as expected, I am in love with his character. The goofus teen is a fantastic counterbalance.

I did not watch BSG. A bit of an inate prejudice, I confess as I wanted my childhood show intact, much like my Doctor Who, but I digress....

I feel, thus far, SG:U is a bit of BSG (with the character-driven, more apt to sexual content), Farscape (on a ship of foreign extraction into unknown wonders) and the Gate-verse fans know.
A few points of canon make me wish I'd paid more attention and seen more episodes of the previous incarnations.
Certainly seems darker, though I hope it avoids any soap opera-esque trends as that will always turn me off of a show.

Also, if you haven't seen it, Carlyle in Formula 51 as Felix DeSouza; starred Samuel L. Jackson.

Two questions about the second episode:

1.) Who was in the pod ship that launched at the end of the episode?

2.) Did they really abandon the two soldiers (the chick and the dude) who went through the planet gate? Or are they back on the ship? I thought the chick was going to be a regular character.

What I really liked about the episode was that it was fairly unpredictable. There were no evil aliens hiding on the planet!

I think that has something to do with the unmanned vessels that they talked about in the beginning, kinda of like scout ships. I also thought about the fact that the ship "knew" that there were people stranded and sent a pod to pick them up.

Unless you count the little sand storms. Was this the ancients helping them out or just a good "alien" plot mover-along-ers.

That was a good episode. Though I totally called it. So anyone think the good Dr. really knew all along? He did smile briefly...but then he may have just been amused that the leader military guy thought he knew everything. And I can't think of any motivation he would have had for trying to get rid of them...unless he somehow fixed the lotto and needed to get rid of someone (but then why solve the communication problem to get the shuttle back?) Maybe he decided the supplies were too important.

I think that was an ancient; that's the type of help they give when humans need to do something important. Always indirectly and you can never be sure what happened.

Carlyle is being massively underutilized. Also, the supporting cast seem like they're all amateurs and not in a good way like the BSG supporting cast. Something just isn't clicking, and I feel like it's the writing. The writers really need to start bringing their a-game.

Really? I'm loving it. SGU is actually focusing on character progression instead of...I don't even know what to call it. But the writers in Atlantis and to a degree in the later seasons of SG1 rewriting an "emergency" for the characters to solve in a predictable manner does not make good tv. Which is pretty much why Atlantis failed (IMO). Every season felt rehashed and blurred together with little to no character development. In Atlantis especially, the characters felt one dimensional and cliche. Nothing ever really changed (plus space vampires are stupid ;P )

I'm done with the show. I really tried to get into it. I think the Interview/Psych eval gimmick used to create some character development is lazy and cheap writing. The show is called Stargate. How is it that the Star Gate has been used in less than half the episodes? They should call it Communication Stones: Universe

I'm sorry, but this series has none of the qualities of it's predecessors that I loved.

It's when the "pew pew" element is the driving raison d'etre for a show. First act, start a fire. Second act, battle fire. Third act, extinguish fire. Repeat every week. God knows I can watch my fair share of movies that are built on that principle, but for a TV show every episode is a rerun of the last, and it gets old.

I was wondering when Rush and Young were going to really go at it. Figured this would be a good as time as ever.

Either the old ship or Destiny turns around.
