It's looking pretty damn good....but 15 minutes wasn't long enough....

However...
Spoiler: ...it was just long enough for no fewer than two decapitations....

No shit, that was a bloody 15 right minutes there.

It was not long enough for me, which is why cinn didn't watch it at all.

Also: I am not a foot shorter than you BG. The picture you posted is a LIE.

From a marketing perspective, it hit the sweet spot: Just enough to show you the setting and a few main characters, but not enough to really get to know them; just enough to see some of the character conflict, but not enough to see how deep it might run.

It set the stage, but the show hasn't yet begun. The fans know what's going to happen, and now they know what it's going to look like. They've had a taste...and now they're salivating.

It's going to be two long weeks.

And here is an interesting perspective:

2. The story is compelling. Befitting an incredibly popular series, the books are packed with chapter after chapter that abruptly end in cliffhangers. The dialogue is often funny, acerbic and sometimes even heart-breaking. Though the books are as thick as phone directories, the story moves quickly and it’s almost guaranteed to surprise you. In all my years of reading, seldom has a plot twisted so suddenly that I am shocked enough to say something like “Holy …” out loud. A Song of Ice and Fire has done that to me many times and HBO’s adaptation looks to follow.

3. The characters come first. Even if you’re not someone who likes fantasy, you will enjoy Game of Thrones because it’s not so much a fantasy tale as it is an outstanding character-driven drama that just happens to be set in a fantasy setting. Westeros, the land where the series takes place, is a dog-eat-dog place where most everyone plays the angles and is looking out for themselves. The end result is a very tangled web of deceit, power plays and intrigue, which should make for an infinitely watchable show.

4. Game of Thrones is based on really great writing. Martin weaves an incredibly complex story that encompasses thousands of miles, dozens of characters and a history that spans thousands of years. Yet, it’s easy to follow and just as compelling to read. To tempt you further, Martin was called “the American Tolkien” by Time Magazine. This is mentioned not to start a flamewar or suggest he is the be all, end all of fantasy, but to illustrate how good his writing is. Further, Martin is credited, along with executive producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss, as having written the series.

5. HBO does a better job at this kind of thing than anyone else. Look at their track record — if there’s one thing HBO does better than anyone else, it’s original dramas. Band of Brothers, The Sopranos, The Wire, Oz, Deadwood, John Adams, Six Feet Under, True Blood — this list only scratches the surface of the great dramas HBO has brought to the small screen. What’s more, with some of the mature content in Game of Thrones, it’s tough to imagine the show being on network television or anywhere else.

6. All signs point to faithful adaptation. Martin has been deeply involved with the production since the beginning and – if you read his blog – his excitement is contagious. Plus, the set photography, the images of the cast, the behind-the-scenes vignettes and, most recently, the wallpaper images that depict some of the major locations of the story all show that the series creators really understand what the book is about and that will, hopefully, lead to very good things. Heck, they even hired someone to invent an authentic language for the Dothraki. It seems no shortcuts are being taken.

7. The series was given a proper budget. With estimates at nearly $60 million for 10 episodes, expect big things on the small screen. And while GoT’s budget is somewhat average for a big production series, the fact that HBO committed these resources toward an unproven show says a lot about their confidence of success. Early shots of sets, special effects and the cast show the money is being well spent.

8. HBO hasn’t forgotten about the fans. Before filming began, fans were recruited for input. And, with each step, the folks over at HBO have remembered who their biggest critics will be. Martin has been heavily involved in decisions along the way (and the first to be edge-of-the-seat excited about the progress of the series). As the opening date draws closer, HBO has introduced a couple of social marketing tools to drum up excitement and gone so far as to serve Westeros-inspired foods last week to lucky little folk of New York last week and Los Angeles this week.

9. A lot of thought went into casting the right person for each role. Because Game of Thrones is so driven by character development, casting needed to take precedent over everything else. And it appears that casting director, Nina Gold, understood this imperative. There are few household names in the cast, much like HBO’s other huge success, Band of Brothers. Plus, most of the choices seem perfectly spot-on at first glance (e.g., Peter Dinklage as Tyrion Lannister, John Bradley as Samwell Tarly, Kit Harrington as Jon Snow, Conan Stevens as Gregor Clegane …).

10. This will be the show of 2011 – don’t be left behind! The early reviews are starting to come in and they are positively glowing. The source material is a best-selling series of books and a fan base that is legion. Cast, sets and direction look to be more than anyone could hope for. HBO looks to have another winner on their hands. Don’t forget to set your DVR, stream from HBO GO, or throw a watch party — winter is coming!

20 hours and 29 minutes! I don't think I've ever been this excited about a television show.

I managed (barely) to keep from watching the preview, so everything will be completely new and fresh to me tomorrow night. Eden is over at a friend's house, planning the menu for the premiere party we're attending. I know cider, lemon cakes, and mead will be present, but I'm not sure what else they've got going (I heard rumors of venison and pheasant, but I think they might have decided to go with ham. Er...roasted boar.)

Our house shirts have been freshly laundered (Lannister for Eden, Targaryen for me), and I think I may break out my black cloak to wear on the way over. It's very thin, though--I'd freeze on the Wall ;)

Anyone else doing something special for tomorrow?

I'm not doing anything special...just sitting down, taking it in, and praying it doesn't suck.

Granted, even if it sucks, I'll probably love it.

I don't have HBO, so I don't know when I'll get to see it :(

We don't have HBO, either...but one of our friends does, which is where we'll be watching. After tonight, I don't know when I'll be able to catch the eps, since I usually work on Sunday nights.

Between Game of Thrones and not being able to watch my Reds games, though, I've never felt this much of an urge to get cable.

It feels like Winterfell here today. A bit chilly and it actually snowed!

So...at least 19 critics have weighed in, and Game of Thrones season 1 is currently sitting at a metascore of 82/100 on Metacritic.com! Looking good!

I'll admit, the Stannis storylines (Asha Greyjoy etc...) aren't terribly interesting to me. Davos is cool but I feel that (for the moment at least) they're a distraction from the main Stark/Lannister/Targaryen triangle.

But good choices both!

Wow, that is not at all how I pictured Stannis. I was picturing something much closer to John Rhys-Davies:

You know what? Depending on how they do his makeup, it's kind of how I pictured him. For example, if they darken his hair.

Though I suppose he should be balder.

I generally like the look of his face for the role, though I'm not sure what the actor's voice and acting is like.

I was pretty disappointed when I saw the who they cast for Sandor Clegane (just based on google image search)

I kind of visualised him as a hard man, a bit brutal looking.

But the guy they cast looks like a hippy: long floppy hair and a full beard and all of this. He looks like a 40-ish geography teacher, not a violent and dangerous warrior.

Maybe if I saw the actor in action so to speak he would portray the character better, but just visually he didnt look much like I expected the character to.

Trust me, he does't play the character that way. He's well played in my opinion.

Don't fall into the trap of looking at stills and making a judgement. After all, you have said more than once that you respect King Edward I as a warrior and leader. Yet, the way he's been depicted, he looks like a member of the Bee Gees.

Well, you have some right to be put off a bit. The book lore puts the Hound in his late twenties. Rory McCann is in his early forties.

But as with most characters in the series, there has been some serious aging going on. Eddard Stark is supposed to be mid-thirties. Sean Bean? Early fifties. Jon Snow is supposed to be fifteen. Kit Harington? Twenty-four.

I'm more concerned with acting ability and costuming than I am about being accurate about ages.

I personally think age is a crucial factor in the character and his behaviour

Ive only read the first book so far, but I would bet anything that if Joffrey ordered his"dog" to cut down Sansa he wouldnt do it, and furthermore anyone who got in the way of him not doing it would get fucked up, including the king or any cunt who got in the way. I think the comment about his brother not being a true knight meant something to him, perhaps more than he even gets.

A man who had lived to his 40's as an attack dog and nothing more would do as he was told. A man of say 27... well, he wouldnt be a man to push too far...

I'm not sure I understand. Are you going to be a different person when you're in your early forties?
