They just released the casting info for HBO's adaptation of George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series on Aintitcool.com.

I couldn't find pictures of Kit Harrington (who plays Jon Snow), but I hope he looks the part, as Snow is one of favorite characters. I *really* want to know who plays Tyrion as he is by far my favorite character. Anyone else going to be glued to your TV sets when this comes out? Here's hoping that it doesn't come out like the "Sword of Truth" series did. |
The mean book writer from Elf is Tyrion... Peter Dinklage
I can't find anything on Kit Harrington either. ---------- Post added at 01:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:53 PM ---------- Supposedly, these are him: Kit Harington at United Agents Albert Narracott (Kit Harington) and Sergeant Thunder (Howard Ward) |
Fred Flintstones as Robert and Boromir as Ned? Seriously though, I imagined Robert to be taller and bigger.
|
I've got to plead ignorance here - I didn't recognize a single capitalized name in the O.P., except for HBO.
Further research indicates that it will be a series, with each book in the series comprising one season's episodes. Like I said, I'm not familiar with the series, but if HBO is considering devoting seven years of hour-long programming to it, I can't see a reason not to at least buy a copy of A Game of Thrones. Don't everyone get their hopes up, though - it's tough to envision HBO seeing this all the way through - let's not forget how they abandoned Deadwood, Rome, and John From Cincinatti, and replaced them with clunkers like Eastbound and Down and Hung. HBO has a lot of work ahead of them to regain the reputation they had a few years ago. |
This is a great series...I can't wait to see what HBO does with them.

The ONLY thing that's in any way bad about the series is that it's not done and Book 5 is giving the author a world of trouble, though he claims he's making some good progress recently. I'll keep my fingers crossed.
I decided to go ahead and reread the series and am about done with A Game of Thrones. It's just as enjoyable as I remembered and I'd quickly recommend it to anyone. A quick word of warning, though: this is hard R rated fantasy. Martin is graphic and unrelenting, so don't dive in expecting your standard swords and sorcery fluff. On his blog he's teasing that there's more HBO pilot news but won't tell us yet. Hopefully soon! |
Odd that we didnt see any women casted yet. Some of those characters are going to be TOUGH to cast. Foremost, Daenerys and Cersei. Given Daenerys incredible exotic and incredible beauty its going to be tough and to be honest, not a single name comes to mind for her.
|
She's a little old for the part and I'm not sure she has the acting chops to support it, but Alexis Bledel is the only person I can come up with for Dany. I'm not really sure how much they're going to keep the violence, nudity and sex, but obviously her role is going to be very high on the sex range which may eliminate basically any actress that's her age.
I don't have any good ideas for Cersei at the moment. Charlize Theron? |
In another HBO casting, Jennifer Ehle has been added to the pilot "Game of Thrones." as Catelyn Stark

The Daily Beast wrote a little piece on the HBO miniseries.
The Next Nerd Obsession - Page 1 - The Daily Beast Apparently it begins shooting this month. Disagree with a lot of the casting though. I can see the queen from 300 as Cersei but who they have as Dany is way off from what I have in my mind. |
HBO officially ordered a whole season... 10 episodes. w00t!

Nice. I suppose this means I should keep reading!

Haha, that's *exactly* what I thought when I saw this. |
I don't know the book series.. but at least you know that HBO picked it up.. they're good at series.. except for things like ROME and Carnival! ;)

I hope you're kidding. Rome was amazing. |
Rome was MEH for me.
 to each their own.. OZ.. that was a great series. |
Recent casting additions:
Roy Dotrice as Grand Maester Pycelle http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...29/pycelle.jpg Kristian Nairn as Hodor http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...rl29/hodor.jpg (From GRRM: "And hey, I'm told that Kristian has already memorized all his dialogue for the entire season!") And Finn Jones as Loras Tyrell, the Knight of Flowers http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...rl29/loras.jpg Also, Tamzin Merchant is out as Dany...GRRM seemed to really like her, so I guess that was HBO's call? The New Dany is Emilia Clarke: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...irl29/dany.jpg |
I saw this short promo (short being the operative word) posted on another forum I frequent:

For Cersei I see Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchette, but if they're too expensive, perhaps Anna Torv from Fringe or Marg Helgenberger. They all do icy well.
I wonder how much of the story HBO will pare down. Martin is one of those fantasy writers who seems to have a pathological mania for adding new characters. Almost every new chapter brings a new house complete with lords, ladies, ancestors, servants, knights, cooks, squires... I mean, he's not as bad as Robert Jordan was with his epic rolls of Innkeepers but still... |
It will have to be pared down. Pretty much any novel must be pared down for the screen, but in Martin's case, we have a work that's based on (celebrated for) both complex plots and multiple viewpoints.
I just hope they're tactful about it and that they capture the spirit. I hope they have similar success as they did with the Lord of the Rings. None of this stuff can be pulled off flawlessly, and you can't please everyone. When is the release date? I see 2010.... [Edit: I see Spring 2011: HBO Encouraged By 'Game Of Thrones': Network programming chief Michael Lombardo says the dailies look 'fantastic'] As an aside, we will see the guy playing Kahl Drogo be Conan next year: Conan (2011) |

Thank god I have a lunch break so I can change my pants. AWESOME.
|
I am worried about how much of the series will have to be removed due to the depth of the books and characters, I just doubt that it will come close to how good the books are.

It's not supposed to be the book. It's supposed to be an HBO miniseries. Direct comparisons never work. Just hope it's a good miniseries. |
Ten hours of film time for one book? And the visuals I've seen so far? FUCK YES.
I've been waiting for this for four years. I -will- be buying HBO for this. |
I'll bring the beer.
|
I KNOW I'm going to be sitting there going "that's not what happened!" But I'll be alternating between saying that and "fuck, that was AWESOME!"
|
I won't even be thinking about the book. I'm going to see what HBO has made in all its glory.

The best 'Game of Thrones' trailer yet -- EXCLUSIVE | Inside TV | EW.com
Follow this link to what it arguably the best trailer for the series yet to be released. I've watched it about ten times now. :) The more I see it, the more I'm convinced that they've done a spectacular job with the casting. It looks fantastic. Check it out! April 17th! |
Wow, definitely a fantastic job. I thought it was going to be a movie. Perhaps its better as a series so long as they get the proper funding (which is looks like they are with the actors they've got). Since they'll have more time in a series and, well, its a long ass story and probably couldn't fit into a book. Its probably what they should have done with Avatar instead of that fiasco.
|
They've set a date for the next book, A Dance With Dragons!

I've been watching the menus for the food cart, I'm cooking some of them for my GoT viewing party.

I'm generally impressed with the casting. In the case of Gregor Clegane, it was probably quite the chore, and to get an actual match would have been impossible if not even worth it.
The actor playing "The Mountain That Rides" is 7' 5" tall, when the character is actually about 7' 11" tall and some 420 lbs. I imagine they chose this guy for his build, looks, and ability to play the character without coming across as a flake. And, you know, the camera adds pounds. And filming techniques can make people look taller. They only need to account for a missing half foot in height. Still, 7' 5" is impressive. To give you an idea, below is a reference: http://i170.photobucket.com/albums/u...in-vs-Eden.jpg |
