They just released the casting info for HBO's adaptation of George RR Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series on Aintitcool.com.

The books revolves around a battle among seven kingdoms and between two ruling families for control of the Iron Throne, the possession that ensures survival through a 40-year winter to come.

Bean will play Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark, known for his sense of honor and justice, who becomes closest adviser to King Robert (Addy).

Harrington will play Jon Snow, Bean's bastard son, and Lloyd will play Viserys, a powerless ruler who seeks to marry off his sister to a powerful king. Gleeson will play Joffrey, King Robert's son.

Peter Dinklage also is in the cast for the production, which is in the pilot stage and begins shooting in October in Ireland.

Guymon Casady, Carolyn Strauss, Vincent Gerardis and Martin also are executive producing.

"Thrones" marks the latest fantasy epic-style production for Bean. He recently wrapped shooting on "Percy Jackson & the Olympians," an adaptation of Rick Riordan's children's book. Bean, repped by CAA, also has "Black Death," a supernatural thriller set during England's first bubonic plague, in postproduction.
I took a look at images of the actors and I have to say I love them. Sean Bean looks how I would see Ned Stark looking, very hard and cold (with a good beard). I like the casting of Mark Addy as King Robert, I think he could play the part of the aging fat king Robert.

I couldn't find pictures of Kit Harrington (who plays Jon Snow), but I hope he looks the part, as Snow is one of favorite characters. I *really* want to know who plays Tyrion as he is by far my favorite character. Anyone else going to be glued to your TV sets when this comes out?

Here's hoping that it doesn't come out like the "Sword of Truth" series did.

I've got to plead ignorance here - I didn't recognize a single capitalized name in the O.P., except for HBO.

Further research indicates that it will be a series, with each book in the series comprising one season's episodes.

Like I said, I'm not familiar with the series, but if HBO is considering devoting seven years of hour-long programming to it, I can't see a reason not to at least buy a copy of A Game of Thrones.

Don't everyone get their hopes up, though - it's tough to envision HBO seeing this all the way through - let's not forget how they abandoned Deadwood, Rome, and John From Cincinatti, and replaced them with clunkers like Eastbound and Down and Hung.

HBO has a lot of work ahead of them to regain the reputation they had a few years ago.

If you like fantasy at all, you will love this series. Pick of a game of thrones and give it a read. I place it at the the top 3 greatest epic fantasy stories and my favorite series of all time.

The ONLY thing that's in any way bad about the series is that it's not done and Book 5 is giving the author a world of trouble, though he claims he's making some good progress recently. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I decided to go ahead and reread the series and am about done with A Game of Thrones. It's just as enjoyable as I remembered and I'd quickly recommend it to anyone. A quick word of warning, though: this is hard R rated fantasy. Martin is graphic and unrelenting, so don't dive in expecting your standard swords and sorcery fluff.

On his blog he's teasing that there's more HBO pilot news but won't tell us yet. Hopefully soon!

Odd that we didnt see any women casted yet. Some of those characters are going to be TOUGH to cast. Foremost, Daenerys and Cersei. Given Daenerys incredible exotic and incredible beauty its going to be tough and to be honest, not a single name comes to mind for her.

She's a little old for the part and I'm not sure she has the acting chops to support it, but Alexis Bledel is the only person I can come up with for Dany. I'm not really sure how much they're going to keep the violence, nudity and sex, but obviously her role is going to be very high on the sex range which may eliminate basically any actress that's her age.

I don't have any good ideas for Cersei at the moment. Charlize Theron?

Apparently it begins shooting this month. Disagree with a lot of the casting though. I can see the queen from 300 as Cersei but who they have as Dany is way off from what I have in my mind.

For Cersei I see Tilda Swinton or Cate Blanchette, but if they're too expensive, perhaps Anna Torv from Fringe or Marg Helgenberger. They all do icy well.

I wonder how much of the story HBO will pare down. Martin is one of those fantasy writers who seems to have a pathological mania for adding new characters. Almost every new chapter brings a new house complete with lords, ladies, ancestors, servants, knights, cooks, squires...

I mean, he's not as bad as Robert Jordan was with his epic rolls of Innkeepers but still...

It will have to be pared down. Pretty much any novel must be pared down for the screen, but in Martin's case, we have a work that's based on (celebrated for) both complex plots and multiple viewpoints.

I just hope they're tactful about it and that they capture the spirit. I hope they have similar success as they did with the Lord of the Rings. None of this stuff can be pulled off flawlessly, and you can't please everyone.

When is the release date? I see 2010....

I am worried about how much of the series will have to be removed due to the depth of the books and characters, I just doubt that it will come close to how good the books are.

It's going to be bound to the same challenges always faced with filming literature. But keep in mind: this is a 10-episode miniseries of one book.

It's not supposed to be the book. It's supposed to be an HBO miniseries. Direct comparisons never work. Just hope it's a good miniseries.

Starting a few weeks earlier this time around, say mid June instead of late July, would allow for that. But now it seems they want to start much earlier than would be necessary if the only reason was to have time to film two additional episodes. But why? I have a theory.

Big Love will be airing their final season starting this Jan. Game Of Thrones and Treme, two of HBO’s biggest dramas, will be airing concurrently in the spring. Not an ideal situation. My speculation is that HBO is lining up season two (and subsequent seasons, hopefully) of Game Of Thrones to replace Big Love on their schedule. This would mean that HBO’s four biggest dramas would air year-round, True Blood (Summer), Boardwalk Empire (Fall), Game Of Thrones (Winter), and Treme (Spring). A great incentive for HBO subscribers to stay subscribed all year long.

Wow, definitely a fantastic job. I thought it was going to be a movie. Perhaps its better as a series so long as they get the proper funding (which is looks like they are with the actors they've got). Since they'll have more time in a series and, well, its a long ass story and probably couldn't fit into a book. Its probably what they should have done with Avatar instead of that fiasco.

GEORGE R. R. MARTIN: I’m not sure I have a good answer. If I did, I would have taken less time. It’s enormous. It’s as long as A Storm of Swords. It’s very complicated. I have a lot of characters and points of view. And I’ve been doing a ton of rewriting, trying to get it where I wanted it to be. Some of these chapters I’ve rewritten more times than I can count before I’m satisfied with them.

Can you tease something from the book?
I don’t want to spoil any surprises. I can say all the characters people have been waiting for are there: Daenerys, Jon Snow, and Tyrion. There’s also new characters, and viewpoints from characters who did not have viewpoints before.

*That the author is still writing might worry some longtime fans (giving Martin a deadline is a bit like making a photo request of J.D. Salinger) but his publisher assures us the date is firm. Winter, and A Dance With Dragons, is coming.

I'm generally impressed with the casting. In the case of Gregor Clegane, it was probably quite the chore, and to get an actual match would have been impossible if not even worth it.

The actor playing "The Mountain That Rides" is 7' 5" tall, when the character is actually about 7' 11" tall and some 420 lbs. I imagine they chose this guy for his build, looks, and ability to play the character without coming across as a flake.

And, you know, the camera adds pounds. And filming techniques can make people look taller. They only need to account for a missing half foot in height.

Still, 7' 5" is impressive. To give you an idea, below is a reference:
