Bligh vs Christian: round 4
Lieutenant William Bligh was captain of the HMS Bounty when a mutiny led by first mate Fletcher Christian befellit in 1789. Bligh was played by Charles Laughton in 1935, by Trevor Howard in 1962 and by Anthony Hopkins in 1984. Christian was played by Clark Gable, Marlon Brando and Mel Gibson.
My favourite of those is the most recent one. Christian definately needs to shoulder some of the blame. I've been thinking for a while it's time for a new version, trying to cast it etc. On the evidence of Master and Commander I'd like Peter Weir to direct it. And I'd like to show more of what happened on Pitcairn after the mutineers landed. Both of the characters are seriously flawed and maddened by internal conflict. Bligh vents his anger at his own mistakes at his officers and men whereas Christian firstly swallows his rage, then finds relief on the temporary paradise of Tahiti. If he can do an appropriate accent and command enough authority, James Franco can be Christian. And Bligh is difficult. I don't think anyone could best Hopkins's performance. Maybe Ralph Fiennes. Suggestions and any other comments appreciated... |
