NEWSWEEK

Suddenly, 'Family Guy'

The former Fox sitcom is a new cult hit on Cartoon Network

July 14 issue - For 10 years, the late-night TV battle has raged between Jay Leno and David Letterman, but at the moment, both of them are getting whipped by a toy-factory worker from Rhode Island named Peter Griffin. (You didn't think we meant Jimmy Kimmel, did you?)

GRIFFIN IS THE star of "The Family Guy," an animated series that lasted just 49 episodes on Fox but has been reborn as a cult hit on Cartoon Network. The show-a bitingly funny send up of family sitcoms featuring a moronic patriarch, a talking dog and a diabolical, British-accented infant boy-is drawing 1 million viewers per episode-topping Leno and Letterman among 18- to 34-year-old men. "I'm not surprised," says Cartoon Network senior vice president Mike Lazzo. "This was one of the few programming no-brainers I've ever had."

It wasn't so clear cut for Fox, which kept switching "The Family Guy's" time slot before finally canceling it last year. By then, the show had amassed a small army of loyalists who'd come to adore creator Seth MacFarlane's taste for obscure pop-culture references, like the Crest Cavity Creeps and the Kool-Aid Man. (You remember-the giant glass pitcher that jumps through walls and yells, "Oh, yeah!" Ah, good times.) The show is now the linchpin of the Cartoon Network's daily "Adult Swim" TV block, and fans have rewarded the move by making it the highest-rated show in the channel's history.

Here's more good news for "Family Guy" fans. During the show's tenure on Fox, MacFarlane's team actually made 50 episodes-one never aired because it was deemed "too controversial" for advertisers. Cartoon Network hopes to air it during the next rerun cycle, which begins on Monday. The taboo subject: religion. Chances are, it's the last new episode we'll get. Lazzo is still trying to relaunch the show, but creator MacFarlane is currently tied up producing a new series. Somewhere the Kool-Aid Man is weeping.

The Family Guy is one of the funniest shows television has seen, but it cannot be considered among the elite had it not been for The Simpsons. I have watch far too many episoded of The Simpsons in my life and it will always eclipse other primetime cartoons based on longevity and consistency. Folks try to tell me it's no longer funny.....I say tell me of another show on T.V. worth watching for 10 plus years.

Family Guy is the best comedy I have ever seen. It is the type of show that can cause hysterical laughter and brighten your day. Sure they made a lot of so called "controversial" jokes, but they were jokes and funny at that. They should never have cancelled that show.

When it first came out, I rapidly dismissed Family Guy as a low-grade Simpsons clone... there's no way any other animated sitcom with a moronic father figure could compete with them when Family Guy was in it's first run. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure it was in the same 'Timeslot of Death' that befell Futurama. (7pm Sunday).

Family Guy didn't stand a chance against The Simpsons, but with The Simpsons going downhill, we need to get our fix elsewhere. I mean FG's alright, it's different than The Simpsons, but not as quite as good.

Word is there are talks of somebody picking up Family Guy, but Seth McFarlane (Producer and or Creator) is working on another project. Pray it comes back, but the inside jokes are way over too many peoples heads. I think that's why it never got the following. Most of the jokes on The Simpsons are more mainstream (But I still love the show). For that reason, it will never get the ratings to warrant a pick-up, or if it does, a long run.

If it gets picked up, it may be hard to bring back the original voices (Seth Green, Mila Kulis). If it was brought back without the originals, I guess that would make for a good Dick Seargent/Dick York joke, but the show just wouldn't be the same. Let's just enjoy what has been given to us.

BTW, I hope Stewie's plans for world domination come to fruition, cause he would be a great leader!

Well, i just watched season four of family guy yesterday after wbuying the DVD boxset.

I have never, ever laughed so hard in my life. Its so much more agressive than the previous series (i counted the word fuck on at least 4 occasions), but it certainly is funnier.

Buy it now!
