Wanted

Wow, I can't believe noone has started a thread on this movie yet.

I watched it this evening, and let me tell you - it far surpassed my expectations.

The action is non-stop, the plot is more than suffiecient, and the special effects are incredible. There are some parts that go over the top, of course, but that is to be expected in any summer blockbuster.

This one kinda snuck up on me - I didn't hear very much hype at all about it - kinda the the original Matrix. Not much propaganda to begin with, but one of the films that alters the future of CG/Action forever. Definately not as groundbreaking, but a step above all the other action films I have seen as late.

Anyone else see it? Opinions?

I can't stop thinking about how badly I want to violate Angelina Jolie.

I don't think that's healthy.

Willravel 06-29-2008 01:37 AM

It was interesting, but my opinion is colored by the fact that my car broke down and AAA apparently lapsed. A 1.5 hour walk will probably forever taint my opinion of the film.

Otherwise, it was a fun, mindless action movie. BTW, I'm really surprised about how many people saw it. the 8:20, 9:20 and 10:15 showings were all sold out.

I thought it was a kick ass assassin movie and it is just as good as Shoot Em Up.

Frosstbyte 06-29-2008 08:25 AM

If you cared at all for this movie, go rent the director's original Russian movies and have a much better movie-going experience. Nightwatch and Daywatch, its sequel, have much more style than Wanted, even if the plot is remarkably similar. Timur doesn't seem to be straying very far from his roots with this one.

It was a very average 6/10. Angelina Jolie needs to start eating again, because she looks like a corpse.

Redjake 06-29-2008 08:30 AM

Saw it, it was pretty horrible.

If they were trying to make it just a feel-good summer action flick, it wasn't done correctly. Some things you can't ignore and just have a good time - such as horrible CGI, corny one-liners that even Jason Statham couldn't make awesome, etc.

I loved Shoot Em Up because it was so bloody stupid it was fun. So when I saw the trailers for Wanted Ifigured it would be similar and fancied seeing it.

A workmate went last week and she loved it, so I've got tickets booked and we're leaving in about half an hour.

Baraka_Guru 06-29-2008 08:41 AM

We will be seeing this sometime this long weekend.

Daniel_ 06-29-2008 08:47 AM

Bloody Canadians. :p

Happy 1st July. :)

Baraka_Guru 06-29-2008 09:27 AM

Thanks. And since it's on a Tuesday, and my boss likes me, I have a four-day weekend.

God keep our land glorious and free, and all that rot.

inBOIL 06-29-2008 11:27 AM

It was ok. Worth seeing, but nothing special. I'll have forgotten about it in a year.

Daniel_ 06-29-2008 01:08 PM

Just back from it, and I have to say that although the story is ridiculous, and the physics is untenable, it was a great film and really enjoyable.

Five stars - the plot turns like a twisty turny thing.

Is it anything like the comic series? If any of you read it. I cant see how they could have stuck anywhere close to the comic plot.

Charlatan 07-01-2008 06:47 AM

I just saw the film tonight and thought it was a lot fun. It gave me the impression it was trying for some depth (in the same vein as Fight Club) but it just didn't quite achieve it.

Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

hambone 07-01-2008 06:58 AM

Saw it last night and loved it.

I agree with this. Not everyone can do what Chuck Palahniuk does. But by the end, you know? That aspect wasn't too bad at all.

I liked it.

QFT!

It tried and failed to be quite so deep, but was entertaining as hell nonetheless.

A not-so-thinking man's Fight Club. Quite right!

Only in name and VERY basic premise (they change supervillains to assassins), so no not really.

Cynthetiq 07-05-2008 09:54 PM

:) entertaining :) both skogafoss and I enjoyed it. we even paid to see the movie something we don't normally do...

DonnieBoy 07-09-2008 05:06 PM

I so enjoyed the comic series that I am very afraid to watch this. Plus I'm sick of Morgan Freeman... Enough of him already.

Yeah, he is suffering from the Christopher Walken effect. Good in small doses, but the market has been saturated, and now you expect him in every movie. Ugh.

Baraka_Guru 07-09-2008 06:22 PM

Geez, at least he's stopped doing those damned crime thrillers all the time. Give him some credit.

RetroGunslinger 07-09-2008 08:02 PM

This is my favorite movie of the year, actually. Come July 18th, it shall be surpassed, but until then it takes the cake.

I've really gotten into more nihilistic, pure action recently. I like seeing violence for the sake of violence, just because I've transcended that "film must be art" rubbish that soaks IMDb.

Also, my new motto is "What the fuck have you done lately?" So there's that. Great "message" to the film, even though some seem to be mistaking it for "Oh, be an asshole and kill people and you'll feel better", which is not the case.
