Need a book to read. Help!

Hey everyone. So I'm looking for a new book to read and I was hoping I could get some recommendations. I think I want to read a really good Horror book. I've read all of Stephen Kinds stuff so someone else. No HP Lovecraft either. Just a really good horror book. Thanks all!

Read the new Harry Potter yet? Very dark, more so than the other 4.

Nope. Haven't read any of the Harry Potter books. Just never got around to it. I was thinking something more"horror". Zombies, monsters....I dont know. Something frightening.

Have you read any Dean Koontz? He's pretty good. Suddenly I am drawing a blank on some great horrors. I will ponder and seek to see what I may be able to come up with.

for horror writers you can't go wrong with Clive Barkers Books of Blood series.
Poppy Z. Brite and Nancy Collins kick ass.
And anything by Skipp and Spector is splatterpunk at its best.

Ok. Between the two, which do you recommend? "Book of the Dead" or "Light at the end". Thanks!

Actually 'The Scream' is my favorite of theirs.
It rips holes in your brain.
'Light at the end of the Tunnel' is pretty good but it is their first book and you can tell.
The Books of The Dead are short stories edited by Skipp and Spector that are tributes to the 'Night of the Living Dead' movies.

The Descent by Jeff Long (apocolyptic, scary as hell, creatures living beneath the earth's surface)

Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons (Mind vampires sounds stupid but it's amazing, do not confuse with a vampire novel)

Finishing Touches by Thomas Tessier(twisted, perverted, kinky, bizzare, terrifying)

Can find descent in any book store. Others might be a little harder to find. Good horror novels, all.

Skeleton by Al Sarrantonio

Vampires by John Steakley , There was a movie made based on this book. The book is much better

Necroscope series by Brian Lumely a very great series.

I Am Legend by Richard Mattheson this is a must read, for all horror fans.

Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin. Great book for adults who don't want to read books about wizards written for 12 year olds.

I will second I am Legend. It is the premise for the movie Omega Man and so many other horror writers mention Matheson as one of their primary inspirations.

I don't read anymore because I was an English major. Horror novels usually suck though. They're all the same.

Ya know, Stephen King is kind of known as the master of "scary". Might wanna try some of his junk. If you just wanna read something good, then pick up anything by Heinlein. Robert A. Heinlein that is. Grand daddy of all science fiction

For scary stuff, try Andrew Vachss.
No supernatural elements, but he knows the human psyche like few others. I know a lot of people that just couldn't go through with reading his stuff, even though they liked the style.

Like Harry Potter being for the young adult set...

I recommend Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials Trilogy, starting with The Golden Compass (Northern Lights in UK) then continuing with The Subtle Knife, and finally The Amber Spyglass...

You've probably seen the movie "The Exorcist" but check out the book. Still get chills thinking about it.

you know the PC game "Doom" ? ?

well believe it or not there are 4 books based on this game. they are all out of print but you can find them on ebay or maybe local used bookstores.

I have them all and I was suprised that they were alot of fun to read. you want ZOMBIES ?? there are zombies, you want MONSTERS ?? there are monsters.

part of the fun will be hunting them all down, but I thought it was worth it. plus it'll get you all jazzed up to play Doom 3 when it comes out !

Check out the Virgin Suicides by Jeffery Eugenides. Totally excellent book, I recommend this one highly.

I'm currently reading a book called Crow Lake by Mary Lawson. It's not bad, very much a story type of story, i.e. nothing much has happened (yet), but it's a nice read.

But seriously, read the Virgin Suicides, you won't regret it.
