Anyone watching Last Comic Standing?
At first it was a competition show like American Idol, but for comics. Now it's become a reality show like Real World, but for comics. Actually, it's a combination of both. But if the intent is for the funniest comic to win (based on audience voting), then I disagree on the elimination aspect of the show. Here's how it works; Each comic votes against another comic. Then the votes are revealed and the taped comments are viewed by all. So each comic knows who voted against them and why. The comic with the most votes then picks from any of the other comics who voted against him or her and the two go head-to-head with a short stand-up routine. A studio audience picks the winner. Although this makes for great reality-tv backstabbing (ala Survivor), it doesn't guarantee that the two best comics will remain to the end. What if one of the funnier comics is also a real asshole in the house. He or she gets the most votes and then picks one of the other good comics. One of the two will lose and be out. Of course, who's funnier is all a matter of opinion.
I'm hoping the fat guy falls down and crushes one of the other comics. Now that would be funny! |

As with all the new reality shows, it looks so terrible at first, than you find yourself still watching it. The fat guy seriously sucks. i mean he is so unhealthly looking, it disgusts me. I was hoping the cowboy was going to beat his ass when he called him a bitch ass punk. haha. good tv.

I was interested in watching this one, as I LOVE standup, but I was afraid it was going to be an hour long show of these people trying to grab every second of airtime that they could, by being shamelessly stupid in hopes for laughs. Is the show actually like this, or is it watchable?

Anyone else a little creeped out by Dat? I can understand being enthusiastic about your trade, but his notebook deal is a little excessive (he documents every act he does, scientifically analyzes his jokes, etc.). I think he got put on the show to be someone the audience can root for since he was so poor, but he's more of a nerd and a downer than anything else. I hope he gets booted next week.
Also, has anyone else seen these comics already? I know I saw Rich Vos on Tough Crowd once, and I also saw a little of him on the USO Comedy Tour that was showing on Comedy Central. Ralphie May looks a little familiar - maybe a clip or two on BET or something that I saw. Anyway, Jay Mohr was on Kimmel a while back and admitted to having friends in the house that he knew before the show started. Sounds a little sketchy to me. I like the show overall. I like that going or staying isn't purely social. I hate when the only aspect of the contest is conspiring and alliances and crap like Survivor. At least on this show even if you get voted you can stay if you hold your own. And to answer someone's question, there's not as much hamming as I was expecting. They joke around constantly because they're comedians, but they're not turning to the camera and doing schtick or anything. |

Yeah, I knew I had seen that Rich Voss guy before. I don't think thats cool, that show should be about a comedian looking for his big break, that is TOTALLY unknown. That would be like Samantha Mumba being on American Idol. By no means famous, but still has a record deal.

Dat Phan took out Dave Mordal. What a shame, I really liked him. He may not have been the best comic, but he was one of the better characters in the house. And Phan's routine sucked, all he did was make fun of his mom in a silly Asian accent. But I will give him credit, his second routine (which beat Geoff Brown) was original and funny!

Yeah, I liked Dat Pahn's second act a lot more than the first one. I think of a lot of stupid stuff, but I've never thought of combining Mortal Kombat and taking a leak.
The show's actually made me start thinking about my old plan to build up a 5 minute routine and try it out at an amateur night sometime, never did it because I got a job where I worked on that particular night. |

I just finished watching the latest episode (where Dat Phan beats Geoff in the one-on-one competition). I didn't think Dat was all that great in the last episode (agreeing with a previous post about how all he did was mock his mother), but he totally won this last one over completely. It was original and very funny.
I'm hoping either Rich Vos, Dat Phan, or Ralphie May wins it in the end. I was sorry to see Dave go last episode. |

Dave cracked me up more with his "in-house" comments and jokes than his stand-up. I thought he was probably one of the best there. You should read his last words that he shared... from nbc.com:
Final Words: I'd like people to know that Rich Vos did all of our ironing and clothes washing. As masculine as he is, he loves taking care of clothes. He was especially mindful of the women's under things. He'd even smell them to make sure they were as clean as they could possibly be. How many men would go to those extremes? He's going to make some gal very happy one day. And probably only for one day. Me? I made coffee. That's my only talent. Even in a rough environment, I need Java. I used the garbage disposal to grind the beans, and at times made my own filters out of toilet paper, but we had coffee. Good coffee. There is a rumor that Cory is carrying my baby, but I've yet to see test results. That dude was FUNNY. |
