Eurovision!
I dont know why I watch this every year, Im not even gay - I half wanted to post this in nonesense rather than entertainment, but...
The Russian guy didnt deserve to win. I actually LIKED the Spanish chiptune track, although Terry Wogan ripped the piss out of it The UK werent the best, but we deserved mid table, it was a solid effort and there were a lot worse songs... finishing last was too harsh. There was lots of pretty girls, but the Greek singer just had that look about her like she would be absolutely marvellous in bed. I was cheering Greece on - but bloc voting from the East robbed them! |

I will be looking forward to clips of the show, winners and losers. |
I watched it, and we all cheered Germany to lose and have The Hasselhoff ride into it and save the day.
I am with you that the Russians didn't deserve to win, but I was blown away by the Finnish metal group. I am not into metal but the straight-from-the-80's-metal-band costumes and their sound was pretty good. |

We listened to the first part of the finale tonight in the car on the way home from soaking in a hidden hot spring on Snæfellsness... we had a Slovak, a Lithuanian, a half-Icelandic half-Aussie, and me and ktspktsp in the car. Pretty funny. Everyone in Iceland loves it, no matter how kitschy they think it is. It is seriously the Superbowl of Europe, at least in terms of Big Annual TV-Watching Party Event. I think the figure-skating dude did it for the Russian team, though personally I had a soft spot for the Latvians' pirate get-up. :)

Haven't seen it, but Dima Bilan is one of the hottest Russian acts right now, that might have played a huge role in his winning the Eurovision. Hell, I even have a couple of his songs in my car on some mix CDs.

The problem is, because of reigional voting, its impossible for any Western European country to ever have a chance to win now.
EDIT - although, if I am being fair, a lot of other European countries take it seriously and send their top boys (or top girls), while we usually send second or third rate acts, failed reality TV competitors, etc... If UK had sent, for example, Girls Aloud - we might have done allright... but someone like UK is still giving nations like Russia a 50 point head start due to the number of ethnic Russians spread throughout the former Soviet states. |

Eurovision certainly is considered kitsch, at least here & it is very popular with the gay comminity.
There has always been political voting (Greece & Cyprus, Germany & Turkey, etc...) but now the Baltic and Balkan states simply outnumber the Western ones, and former Yugoslav countries and Russia will always have a head start on the rest until this is changed somehow. And the UK has also sent some pretty awful entries, and havent been represented by an "A List" pop star for some time. The kid Russia sent is a big star there and in Europe. Andy Abrahams is an ex dustman who lost in X Factor. I think it was a mid table song, but he doesnt have a fan base in Europe, and we dont have much political voting on our side, which is why we finished last rather than 16th or whatever. I dont see that any of these statements are contradictory. And I still wanted the little minx from Greece to win, even though her song was pretty cheesy. |

Yet you seem to have much more commentary and insight than you care to admit as not being gay or kitsch in following or understanding the nuances. |
