There was a really good documentary made on 1960's and 1970's horror movies...although I can't remember the name of it now...but it had interviews with the filmmakers who all credited, in retrospect, their exposure to the Vietnam War as their inspiration for creating their horrific visions of culture in decay. I guess today's need for even more heightened sadistic experiences is indicative of something more...that I prefer not to think about.
