Live Free or Die Hard

June 27th, Live Free or Die Hard makes its way to theaters, and I was just wondering how everyone felt about it. Is Bruce Willis getting too old for action? Is four movies too many? Is Justin Long a lousy side-kick?

For me, I'll be marking off the days on my calendar until this movie is released. Bruce, who is 52 now, still has several years of ass kicking before he can retire. In the past few years, he has given some great performances. I could see him doing more Die Hards in the years to come (Well, hopefully one more at least).

Justin Long makes me nervous. He is the whiny cheerleader guy from Dodgeball and the whiny guy who pretends that he's cool from Waiting. This seems like a major step down from Samuel "Mother Fucking" Jackson. I feel like Long was put in this movie to help get a younger audience, but I'd rather Willis be partnered with a badass and not a Robin sans tights.

MexicanOnABike 06-04-2007 11:46 PM

I'm also waiting for this to come out. I'll definitely go see it in the cinema if the critic don't bash it too much. I'm going to need a good refresher on the previous die hards before though.

the cast can't be too bad. I think they can pull it off. As for Willis being too old? that's just crazy talk. if they can do the action, then they should stick to the action.

also: theres a new die hard box set comming out a few weeks before the movie. it looks like it's under 40$.

Estevez 06-05-2007 12:01 AM

I've already got the first 3 on dvd which, I will be watching in a marathon right before I go to the theater.

And, I'd watch this movie even if his partner was an orangutan (who am I kidding, especially if his partner is an orangutan.) I just despise Justin Long, and that is going to take a little enjoyment out of the movie for me. But, this is a Die Hard movie, so he probably gets the crap beaten out of him.

I am just thankful that they changed the release date for the movie. It was going to open on July 4th with Transformers, and I didn't know which one I was going to watch first. Luckily, they bumped the movie up.

I still haven't seen Die Hard III. I loved the first one. It changed action films as we know them. Number two was competent but there was just something about the third one that didn't draw me in...

I'd recommend the third one. I think it suffered on release from narrow expectations. Give it another try and I think you'll see it stands on its own legs.

As for the new one, I'm waiting for the reviews. The title sounds too much like self-parody.

willravel, that would make me buy a mac in a heartbeat.
And thanks for reminding me that he did those commercials. I almost forgot about that. Chalk up another reason why I hate Justin Long.

3 is also my favorite. I also happen to be a huge Sam Jackson fan, but apart from that, it was a lot faster paced than the previous ones, and the story was just amazing.

Another vote for III being the best in the series... although I don't think that b/c SLJ is in it. I love Jeremy Irons's performance as the villian, and it's a perfect blend of action, suspense, and plot twists.

I was really excited for this after seeing the first trailer... but then I saw the second trailer and now I'm kinda weary about it. The police car into the helicopter, the harrier jet flying under a bridge, and the triple-car collision with Willis in the middle who remains untouched... all that makes me think this will be one of those movies where they make everything over-the-top and ruin the movie because they're trying too hard. I hope they prove me wrong.

Jeremy Irons was a badass in III.

And, in LFoDH, you forgot about the part where he shoots a machine gun around a corner with his foot.

This also worries me, as they are relying heavily on CG effects(as opposed to the other movies in the series), which can cause people to go over the top just because they can.

I am going to remain positive though and hope for the best because if they let me down, I may riot and burn a few theater seats.

Frosstbyte 06-18-2007 07:21 PM

I just saw a TV commercial for this movie and it had a PG-13 rating at the final screen. My soul weeps for the commercial Fox fuckstain executives (and if any of you are members of this forum, please come to my house where I will be happy to repeat that to your face) that decided that the fucking Die Hard series deserved to be turned PG-13. I may see the movie anyway and even if it's good, I'll know in my heart that it could've been a hell of a lot better.

Willravel 06-18-2007 07:47 PM

"Yippee Kayay, Mother Fucker" better be in there, or there'll be hell to pay. Hard. Or harder. Live Free.

God that's a long title for a Die Hard movie.

QuasiMondo 06-19-2007 05:20 PM

I dunno anymore. I just saw a trailer, and he's flying a F-22 Raptor down the FDR Drive (or at least the make it look like he's flying a F-22 Raptor down the FDR Drive.

I saw an ad on the side of a bus that read: "Yippee Kiyay Mo" at which point it was cut off by the edge of the frame. Below it was the release date. I thought that was pretty clever.

The trailers are looking pretty ridiculous, so my expectations are low.

Redjake 06-19-2007 05:39 PM

This movie is going to suck. It's overproduced. Die Hard does not need CGI; in fact, if one movie in the entire fucking universe doesn't need CGI, it's Die Hard 4 - yet they found a way to sneak in the ridiculous, over the top effects in there. Ugh. When will film makers realize that movies can succeed with little use of computer graphics (Batman Begins, Casino Royale, Children of Men, etc.)

Some movies rely on it, and that's ok - but I just see Die Hard as a movie that should have real, hardcore action, the old-fashioned way.

I still have hope...

Timothy Olyphant (sp.?) scared the living shit out of me in The Girl Next Door. Yes, you read that right. He was down right creepy and abusive in that movie. I am hoping they spin that on his villain character in DH4.

dirtyrascal7 06-20-2007 02:30 AM

Besides the overdone CGI, I'm also skeptical that they've stayed true to the John McClane character of the past... who I think of as a rough, blue-collar cop who happens to get stuck in these intense situations, and who will do what it takes to get the job done. From the previews, however, McClane seems to be acting more like a supercop-type character... someone who thinks he's a total badass and wants to prove it by sticking his neck out.

I hope you prove me wrong, Len "Pretty Boy" Wiseman (the director).

Humble is the key!

MexicanOnABike 06-21-2007 07:42 AM

I just bought the dvd collection so i could get a fresh look before #4 came out!

Speed_Gibson 06-25-2007 10:29 PM

I have the DVD collection of the first three and like all of those, not eagerly awaiting this one though. Hopefully they will stop by 'Die Hard 9: The invasion of the nursing home' :paranoid:

Lasereth 06-26-2007 03:13 AM

I want this movie to be good but it's gonna suck dick like the other sequels of this year. Seriously, when is a good movie gonna come out? Let's just ruin every series in 2007 with horrible part 3s and part 2s. Sounds like a plan. Can I get a SUCK on 3. 1.2.3.SUCK!!!!!!!!!!

MexicanOnABike 06-26-2007 08:59 AM

http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/live_free_or_die_hard/
rotten tomatoes rating of 86% and a user rating of 94%.
it's looking good for now. not a massive flop like some of you predicted.

I just hope it keeps good rating which should mean it's a good movie. only a few more days!

 That sounds accusatory!

Lasereth 06-26-2007 03:59 PM

DAMN!!! If this movie stays above 80% on rottentomatoes then I will bow to the movie gods. PLEASE let this movie not suck.

Redjake 06-28-2007 03:53 AM

This movie sucked. I don't have much time to explain (gotta go to work), but it didn't seem like a Die Hard movie AT ALL. It's pretty sad when Justin Long was probably the best part of the movie. He did fantastic.

Long story short, the CGI was so overused and overabundant that it turned the movie into a videogame about halfway through, they don't concentrate on the fact that uh, you know, John McLean has been through 3 of these "episodes" before and it's starting to get eerie how often he gets put in these situations, the "believability" factor of the movie was completely destroyed by the "graphix hacking" (cool graphics floating around the screen while people relentlessly pound on the keyboard to make things happen), over-used CGI (the Harrier scene is just laugh out loud rediculous), and concentrating on the plot that no one cares about.

Should've been Rated-R so they could put F-bombs in (what's McLean without cussing up a storm??), they should have toned down the CGI and made the action scenes more believable (Die Hard: With a Vengeance had outrageous action scenes, but it was still at least believable), and they should have concentrated on how McLean was getting older/wiser and was starting to question the fact he was being put into these situations over and over (Nakatomi (sp?) Plaza, the airplane situation, and "Simon" were not mentioned in the movie at all, in fact, NONE of McLean's back story was mentioned, ever, in the entire movie - it was like he was a random detective that no one knew)

Justin Long excels - has excellent acting ability and didn't do the usual "annoying sidekick" role. Genuinely funny and believable.

Just another cheesy action movie. 6/10.

mrklixx 06-28-2007 07:05 AM

I saw it last night , and pretty much have to agree with most of Redjake's assessment. It didn't feel like a Die Hard movie to me either. It actually seemed to be a mish mash of two other fairly recent Bruce wilis action movies, Hostage and 13 blocks, both of which felt more like Die Hard movies than this.

One of the main things that was missing for me in this one was the sense of confinement from the other movies In Die Hard 1 he was confined to Nakatome. In Die Hard 2 he was confined to the airport. and in Die hard 3, while there wasn't as much of a physical confinement, he was still confined by the rules of "Simon Says."

So this winds up being being your standard "run from the infinitly supplied/powerful bad guy while seing who can'outhack' whom. Which has all been done before (and useually much better) in the likes of Enemy of THe State, Firewall, Hackers, "24", etc, etc.
Also gone is Mcclean's "humanness". Unlike the other movies where his mounting injuries actually begin to show, here he gains the "superhuman hollywood healing ability". And it seems like Mcclean now "knows" he is "invincible", because he now has zero hesitation or fear doing insane, impossible feats of wonder.

And after the afore mentioned "yeah right" fighter jet scene, the ending was completely anticlimactic, especially compared to the grand "bad guy deaths" in the other 3.

As far as the PG-13 editing goes, there were times when it actually looked like I was watching a bad kung-fu movie because it had obviously originally been shot with R-rated dialog, and overdubbed later for the PG-13.

I do however disagree with Redjakes's view of Justin Long. I thought he was very much the "annoying sidekick", and brought absolutely nothing to the film for me.

They should have just called the movie "Fire Sale", and had it star Jason Statham.

I give it a weak 5/10.

dirtyrascal7 06-28-2007 09:14 AM

Well.... shit. Sometimes I hate being right all the time.

Thanks for the reviews, guys... and for saving me a few bucks. :)

Redjake 06-28-2007 05:55 PM

PERFECT mrklixx........that's exactly right. This movie seems like just another Jason Statham random action movie. They could replace Willis with Statham and I wouldn't have noticed.

Willravel 06-28-2007 06:35 PM

I enjoyed it very much. It was easily greater than Die Harder. I found myself laughing as I was having so much fun. When Spoiler: one of the henchmen fell into a grinder and McClain went, "Oh No!" I almost threw up I laughed so hard.

good enough for me! thanks. I usually trust your reviews. except for superman. haha!

stevie667 06-29-2007 05:27 AM

I might wait for the directors cut DVD to come out. They completly ruined AVP, Terminator 3 and countless others by making them 12/15 rated instead of 18.

Then again i might just do a marathon and go watch it, depending on how nice i'm feeling...

warrrreagl 07-02-2007 07:49 PM

I also enjoyed it. At least the parts I was able to watch. For some reason, our viewing time had been designated as the training session for the local homie gang. At various times throughout the movie, one of them would walk to the front of the theater and throw up a hand sign and at least two dozen soldiers and their ladies would get up simultaneously and walk out together. And then walk back in 5 minutes later and sit back down. And then repeat. I left for a pee break at one point and the theater's manager was laughing and talking with a small group of them outside the theater door, so going for help was out of the question.

If anybody knows what happened between mins 1-8, mins 19-28, mins 42-51, mins 73-84, mins 90-99, and mins 109-118, please PM me or Grancey.

Bu we really did like it.

Konichiwaneko 07-04-2007 01:26 AM

Didnt' go in expecting a shakespeare play. Came out entertained by a movie completely unrealistic, sensational, and absolutely fun.

fresnelly 07-18-2007 08:42 PM

Just saw it.

They lost me during the ridiculous Jet fighter sequence but everything else pulled me right along.

Oh man, was I ever looking forward to each bad guy's comeuppance. I loved the Terminator riff that John Mclane was on.

SUV in an Elevator? Check.
Dropped into a Giant Blender? Check.
Surprise gunshot to the chest? Check.
Gunshot Spoiler: through John's own body? Check!

They should have ended it at the Social Security complex and skipped the jet, but still, I was very satisfied.

Porkchop 07-19-2007 09:40 AM

Really enjoyed this, best of the sequels imo. Cant compare to the first movie though.

blahblah454 07-19-2007 09:39 PM

I am torn between seeing this and staying home. I think I will wait for it to come out on dvd and then download it anyways though. I kinda hate hollywood these days

NoSoup 07-30-2007 12:45 PM

I saw this a while back, and I thought it was pretty fantastic.
'Granted, the plot was a bit silly and much of the action overdone, but that's exactly what I was expecting. I got what I paid for :D

Lol I didn't notice that the first time I saw it, but the second time I caught it and had a good laugh. His laugh in the tunnel after the helicopter thing made me nearly burst my sides laughing. Great Movie

Not Right Now 08-28-2007 07:10 PM

Justin Long: "You just blew up a helicopter with a car."
Bruse Willis: "I ran out of bullets."

Best. Line. Ever.
