Let's start our own DVD Sharing Service

I was thinking that with the movie buffs we have here, that we should start our own movie sharing service, like Netflicks or Blockbuster, but without the subscription charge.
Here's how it would work:
1. Catalog your DVD collection and find some movies that you could do without for a while.
2. Post the titles (maybe a brief synopsis) in this thread.
3. If you see a movie that you would like to see, send a PM to the owner giving your address (or a PO Box) that the DVD can be sent to.
4. It would be good if movies were traded, rather then just being sent out.
5. So the person whose DVD you want to see, can peruse your list of movies and select something that they would like to see.
6. The TFP'er who owns the DVD packages it up and sends it out to you. When you get it, watch it, and send it back.
7. Everyone pays their own postage. If the package is flat enough, the postage isn't very much. Even sticking the DVD into a padded sleeve and then into a cardboard mailer would work.

Anyone interested?

I am definitely interested. I will be cataloging my DVDs this evening.

MexicanOnABike 03-15-2007 12:11 PM

wow. that would be insane. it's great that you started this!
edit: user should point out for what region their DVDs are from. NTSC or PAL or dvdrom. and what languages are included? audio and subs.

lucifer, great idea. i have something like two dvds to my name, but i support this idea in theory.

fresnelly 03-15-2007 12:29 PM

What are the legal ramifications of such an idea. Isn't this the same as p2p filesharing of copyrighted materials?

I'm so confused.

I don't think so...I belong to two swapping clubs on the internet - books and cds. This wouldn't be any different, I don't think...as long as no is making money off of it.

and...I'm not sure if I could part with any of my dvds, I don't have that many :(

pig 03-15-2007 12:41 PM

fresnelly,

i'm pretty sure you can legally swap / share materials, you just can't copy them. otherwise, you're up against that bullshit copyright argument (my opinion)

so.

no one, and i mean NO ONE copy each other's dvds. pinkie swear and all that.

even copies would probably fall under the fair use clause, i would guess.

ShaniFaye 03-15-2007 01:15 PM

I dont see how its any different than the paperback swap site

I keep my DVD's cataloged (more or less) on DVDSpot. My collection can be viewed here. It's easy to add DVD's just by putting in the UPC number. There is a loaning function that I've never used but it might be useful for this purpose.

alvinsate 03-16-2007 06:35 PM

I am not 100% sure swapping my dvd :(

DaveOrion 03-16-2007 09:20 PM

I have about 400 DVD's but they're copies. All the originals were lost in a fire....or was that a flood??? So what about that??? You can ship media mail anywhere in the lower 48 states for $1.73....

Dilbert1234567 03-17-2007 09:04 AM

it's a great idea, but netflix is so much easier and cheaper.

MexicanOnABike 03-17-2007 12:06 PM

if it becomes higher to do this than renting from the stores, then i don't see many people going for it. I don't have a car so going back and forth to the post office to pick up or drop off mail is more expensive than walking to the store and renting a few movies.

alvinsate 03-18-2007 06:50 PM

I'll would refer DVD renting. :) I have no choice .. :grumpy:

Jinn 03-18-2007 07:32 PM

Alright, I'll start..

I have a retail DVD copy of "Young White Voyeur Butt" that I really don't want.. I couldn't really give you a plot synopsis, either..

Any takers?

EDIT: by takers, I mean someone who would like to receive the DVD in the mail..

Ample 03-19-2007 05:21 AM

Would there be much "harm" in just posting a link for a site like rapidshare or megaupload. I never buy DVDs when I could just download them. I'm sure a lot of you do the same.

Reese 03-28-2007 09:48 PM

All my dvds are in my store.. you're all welcome to come in and rent one though :P
