Survivor 14: Fiji
ok the new season is getting ready to start and the survivors have been posted!!
http://www.cbs.com/primetime/survivor14/ this is the first season with 19 million dollar chasers starting out It premiers Feb 8th We have 10 guys and 9 girls, ranging in age from 23 to 55, with 3 contestants being over 50 and 10 of them under the age of 30 If I remember right from the 13 finale, there will be 2 hidden immunity idols on exile and the camps will be very different. |
I'm excited about the new season and dismayed that they kept the hidden immunity idol schtick. The season is usually over in episode 3 when Bob Lucky Damn Ass finds the idol and throws Outwit-Outlast_Outplay right out the window.
|
Can we please have something new?
Like... "This season on Survivor! ANTARCTICA!!! .... three people die... THIS SPRING!" then cancel the show because it's getting tired. |
2 seasons of the hidden idol and it was never actually played in tribal council either season.
The number is 19 because one contestant dropped out the day before shooting started and they had no backup plan |
Aww, I was hoping it was "19" because The Gunslinger was going to be involved somehow. Roland, Eddie, Susannah, and Jake are the leaders of four separate tribes each trying to Outwit, Outlast, and Outplay the Crimson King. Ka has spoken.
I, for one, LOVE the show, and I don't feel compelled to jump on the obligatory reality-show-bash-wagon just yet. Thanks for the thread, Shani, and I pick the Southerner to win. Do you think maybe possibly they're hoping for a California winner this time (10 out the 19 from that one state)? But you know I have to admit, CBS did do an open casting-call at our local mall for this season and only about a dozen people actually showed up. There were goofs who drove here for hours to get a good spot in line and I think there were seven people in line when it started. |
Im such a Survivor junkie. Im excited- whats the usual start number? It was 16 last season...
|
it has been anywhere from 16 to 20. It was 20 last year (4 tribes of 5)
|
Tivo is awesome for Survivor. We refrain from watching any episodes until the last week then: SURVIVOR MARATHON!
It's pretty easy to avoid absorbing the ongoing knowledge of who went when as there is no reference - the names don't mean anything until you start watching (and I never remember). |
Oh I can't wait!!
|
***Bump***
Starts tonight, I'll be watching. |
hell yeah!!!!! me too
|
woohoo. let the games begin!
|
The "info" blurb on DirecTV says that they start out as one big tribe... that will be interesting! Hopefully they keep it that way for longer than just the first day... I thought last season they were too quick to merge the tribes from their different ethnic groups.
|
Can I just say I think it totally sucks that the person that was responsible for getting the "good" camp built, doesnt get to live in it <insert angry face>
|
I'm pretty disappointed that they fell back into the standard two-tribe format so quickly. They keep throwing new twists into the game to try and keep things interesting, but they never let them play out long enough. I think it would make for a much more interesting season if they were one big tribe from start to finish... or at least let the two tribes live together at one camp.
And Shani, that thought crossed my mind, too... she automatically went to the "bad" camp no matter which team won, which to me is far worse than getting stuck on exile island for a couple days. |
Well, due to the one girl dropping out literally minutes before the start of the game, I'm sure the producers had to scramble to figure out a new way to divide the tribes. Because I'd bet this was not their original plan.
Even though they were only one large tribe for 2 days, that's 2 days longer than ever before, I'm sure there was some networking going on that they didn't show on camera. Should be a good season. |
I think that would be interesting as well, one big massive tribe, individual immunity the entire time.
In regards to the rich camp / poor camp - I hope from now on whoever wins reward gets to move into that camp and its not like this for the season. interesting twist on the immunity as well, having it at the camp. Rocky and Dreamz both annoyed the hell out of me and I hope they both go ASAP. |
Yeah that whole Rocky thing was pretty played out by the end of the hour:)
|
i would bet money that the "resort" camp will always be for the winning tribe. No way they just permanently keep it this way.
Anyone wonder why Mark Burnett did this "winning camp/losing camp" thing on both Survivor AND The Aprentice this year? |

Alright someone please, for the love of Buddah's Belly, tell me how 8 people who have signed up for freakin' SURVIVOR didn't bother to learn how to make fire without a flint before getting to the island. It blows my mind.
Other than that frustrating point, not much happening in last night's episode. Although with Dreamz separated from Rocky, he seems like a cool guy with a unique prespective, having been homeless and all. |
Quote:
For six years, Grancey and I have been wondering if anybody would ever be smart enough to use their glasses, and they ALMOST figured that out last night. CBS can't take your glasses away from you, so it would be the perfect setup. Unless they give you a questionnaire - "Circle all the things it's possible to make fire from" - and if you circle "glasses" then you're out. |
They tried to use a magnifying glass in Africa
|
warrrreagl, I guess that has to be the answer. Mrs. Coaster and I are always shouting at the TV at this point in the season about the lack of firemaking ability of the contestants.
Then there's last season's challenge at the end of the game to make fire WITH a flint, and the 2 girls couldn't do it in an hour. And the loser couldn't even do it WITH MATCHES!!! ARRRRRRGH! |
This is why I love you guys.
I shout and curse at the same things as you do. Nobody ever burned paper or ants with glasses, or mag-glasses, as kids on that show??? Jeeze! |
why the hell would you give up immunity when you are in the lead and losing a member ties you? pure stupidity, my god, I was stunned with that decision.
|
Yeah, I was pulling my hair out on this one too, but I think, in the long run, keeping the food, shelter and good nights sleep will keep them winning.
Rocky is working my last nerve. I agree with Earl, don't like the bed your in? Fix it. |
I would have kept the nice shelter and stuff over immunity also. That kinda thing pays off in the long run.
|
Quote:
----------------------- The shelter vs. immunity thing was the classic question of short term benefit vs. long term benefit. People very often choose short term benefit even when they know there are long term consequences that will eventually outweigh those short term ones. Here, it really wasn't so clear that the long term consequences do this because there's a secondary effect of keeping the good camp--more food, better rest, more comfort may leave them in better condition to win challenges. |
i understand the short vs. long term benefits idea, but, they had a substantial lead and lost two people in two days, I think they were silly allowing the other team to come up even.
|
I like Rocky, he is passionate, vocal and fun to watch, reminds me of Shane from a few seasons ago. However, the things that make him fun to watch on TV are going to get him voted off.
Now the teams may be even in numbers, but the one team still has the decided advantage. |
Is everybody clear on the hidden immunity idol rules? They have to play it BEFORE the votes are read, correct?
Weird. |

I don't think I've ever hated a season of Survivor more than this one. Blecchh! I'm tired of watching the same tribe dominate and DUH - can't imagine why they're so good, can you? I hope whoever came up with the luxury-poverty twist has been fired and NEVER comes back to Survivor. Stupid, stupid idea. That alone has almost driven me to quit watching.
Grancey announced halfway through the show that they'd better mix up the tribes or merge early or SOMETHING - and the previews seem to suggest they will. I think it's too late. What happens after the merge? Well, several folks will enter individual immunity challenges after having been well-fed and well-rested for two weeks and several of them will compete in near-starvation conditions. Gee - I can't imagine how THAT'S gonna turn out... I also think they expected somebody to find the hidden immunity idol by now because they've repeated the same clue three weeks in a row now. I'd be ROYALLY pissed if I was on that show and had been voted off. This is the first time I can recall where the show's writers were responsible for people getting voted off instead of themselves. From the moment Sylvia stepped onto the island she was doomed through no fault of her own, and she seemed like she would have been a great player. |
I was expecting them to switch camps every few days or so, but that hasnt happened either.
|
I've always wondered if during the actual 39 days Survivor is being taped, are the producers actively making decisions on what kinds of challenges are happening. I kind of figured they were to keep things interesting. Last night though, that reward challenge was a joke. Lets put people one on one, and one team has been eating/sleeping well, oh and they all outweigh the other team. I've watched every episode of Survivor since the first season, and I've never thought a challenge was SO one sided. This is easily my least favorite season so far. I thought it was Survivor, not Survivor vs. all inclusive paradise resort.
|
the have/have not thing isn't working. it's clearly a huge benefit for the one tribe.
Funny thing about this season: I think the challenges are really cool and we've seen some very unique ones. On the other hand, I haven't given two shits about a single person who has been voted off yet. I can't say I really like any of them |
There isnt one person on this season that Im rooting for yet....Im disappointed in this one big time
|
you all probably know this, but no new episode this week, and the next new one will be a week from wednesday (due to the NCAA Basketball Tourney). They gave an awful lot away in the preview too
|
Well Rocky finally mouthed his way off the island. Too bad, I liked his style, well, for the most part.
And now Yao Man & Earl have an idol. Yao has brains, Earl has brawn and they are working together. If they can sway one vote (which should be easy with the idol) I see the 2 of them going quite far. And how about that strategy of Yao Man making a fake idol? Frikkin genious! Although I think he could have done a better job on it, still a fantastic idea. |
I really hope that fake idol comes into play, that would be the funniest survivor moment ever.
|
holy crap. i totally forgot Survivor was on last night. What is wrong with me?
|
The only thing I like so far about this season is the fake idol. I hope Yao Man did a good enough job so that whoever finds it thinks it is real. I can imagine all kinds of scenarios where its use would be funny as hell.
|
Glad to see Lisi go. She reminded me too much of a relative of ours who is bull-headedly opinionated but simultaneously nuts, so you can't really argue with her even though she dominates all conversations around her.
She's one of those kooks who, if you call her husband on the phone, she will start calling out things in the background for him to say to us. Not occasionally - constantly. I can easily see Lisi doing that. |
I agree... I'm definitely glad to see Lisi gone. I loved how Dreamz called her out at tribal counsel, I think that probably swayed the vote more than anything. I don't understand why she didn't just say "yes, I really really want to stay." Her two buddies already knew she changed her mind so it really didn't matter if she outed her intentions to Dreamz b/c he was going to vote for her anyway... but she totally fucked herself b/c no one is going to want to keep you around if you have the attitude of "just give me a chance to see what happens."
I did laugh when they showed her voting for Dreamz... "You're a grown man, you might want to think about a name change." lol |
Yup, Lisi, bipolar?? Ever since the tribes changed and she went off to exile island, it's like she had a screw loose.
And I have to agree with those that posted it before. That fake idol NEEDS to come in to play. Can you imagine the look on Probst's face when he asks, if someone has the immunity idol play it now. And someone stands up and says here it is, a coconut with I I painted on it... It might be the best survivor scene ever... |
It could even get funnier if whoever finds the fake idol thinks it is real and replaces it with another fake. Half the tribe could be fooled into thinking they have immunity. I wish Yao Man had spent more time on the fake so it looked more authentic.
|
Best....damn.....episode....by.....far!!!!! The whole season got redeemed for me with that one episode. I LOVE the twist of forcing a vote without strategizing.
|
Not only that, but they gave them plenty of time to come up with strategies before splitting them into teams for the challenge. Then all that goes out the window. I hope they do the random team challenge thing a few more times.
Looks like Yao Man's fake idol probably won't come into play, too bad. Lots of people already know that the 2 real ones were found. |
Whoo weee!!! What a vote!
Now that's what I call Outwit! |
this season was pretty "meh" until the last few episodes. Now IT"S ON!!!
|
I absolutely loved this past episode, the scheming was fantastic. I loved how when Yao Man heard that Mookie had the idol he asked what does it look like.
I felt kinda bad for Stacy, why does everyone hate her, have they really shown much about her in the episodes, she usually seems pretty quiet. I did far prefer Michelle though, but only for the perkyness factor - I think they are both very cute. |
That was a fantastic episode. The look on the faces of the three in the other alliance was priceless.
The only thing that pissed me off was the previews for next week when they went digging through Yao-man's stuff. |
Quote:
|
Outwit indeed! Dreamz is going to be so hosed because now its obvious that he has been playing both sides. Earl's alliance no longer needs him numbers-wise, and the horsemen are toast. Of course now the idol gets re-hidden and something is bound to get twisted with that.
|

|
In the previews for next week it looks like some of the tribe digs through Yao Man's bag and finds his immunity idol. I wonder if there are any rules against stealing it?
|
I haven't checked this thread in a while, but I have to say the tribal council where the "4 horseman" (anyone watch big brother?) thought they had this great scheme was awesome. Probably one of the best councils ever IMO. So yeah about people hating on Stacy, I started hating on the part about the French press where Lisi, and Stacy wouldn't even show Cas and Dreamz how to use the thing so they were drinking coffee grinds. Back then she was just so mean to some of the other people of their clan, that I was just turned off to her.
On the latest episode, that move by Alex, by voting for Mookie was huge for him, he would have been gone, but now he's still alive. With an alliance of 6, and him on the outside, the alliance will now be broken, and he'll be a swing vote I bet. IMO, such a big alliance is going to be tough, I bet in the next episode, smaller groups will try to grab Alex and create a smaller alliance to create a majority. |
The six could survive by voting eachother for a while, if they stick to their guns...
Vote Alex next, he's on the outside Vote Dreamz next, he's been playing the fence, too risky to keep him Vote Stacy next, because most people don't like her If any one of these 3 gets immunity, just switch the order. That would widdle the current 7 down to the final 4, which is where it usually becomes everyone for themselves. |

Some strategic editing on the part of the producers really had me going there for a minute. At least up until they only showed 2 votes being cast. I had no idea that Dreamz was so tight with Earl & Cassandra, looks like my cenario won't play out, with Boo being the big outsider right now.
|
so, any guesses on how they get from 6 down to 1 in just two episodes?

Where is the car giveaway? Where is the food auction? Where is the reward where their family members get to spend the night? Where is the video from home?
|
well they did get letters from home lol
|
I believe the car episode is coming up this week....
|
and they did the food auction way earlier

It sure is looking like a boring ride to F4 - as much as I HATED alex it would have definitely made the show more interesting coming down the stretch had he gotten some people to switch their alliances.... If Earl and Yau make it into the final 3, I bet the 3rd person will get no votes. How would you decide between Earl and Yau - that would be tough.
|
well stacey proved why she doesn't deserve to win. what a moron
|
Yeah, could she have tipped Yao off much more at tribal. I have a feeling he would have played it anyways.... I think he realizes his balls are on the line and obviously he knows he and earl have another one for the next round, so why not mitigate your risk. The others still don't know about the 2nd idol. I wonder if they'll take another shot at him next week. A very smart play by a very shrewd player. <3 Yao Man

Damn! Best. Episode. Evar! What a brilliant move by Yao Man making the deal with Dreamz, then sniffing out the vote. If Yao Man doesn't win the million, I'l be extremely upset. If for no other reason than the fact that he GAVE AWAY a BIG ASS truck like that.
|
^ Agree with you on Yao Man's strategizing. But don't you think it somewhat unfair that Yao ended up with the truck when he almost cost his team the contest? Since there could be only one winner of the truck it should have been an individual contest. Boo was the one that lead that team to victory, and to lose the truck by fluke to a guy he had to drag through the netting must have gutted him.
Dreamz was handicapped by 2 people who didn't put any real effort into the challenge -- they didn't even spread out a bit to dig for the hatchet -- and to lose after having gained such a big lead is almost inexcusable. Earl and Cassandra acted like they didn't want to get their hands dirty... |

I knew it I knew it I knew it.....I KNEW dreamz was gonna go back on his friggin word
|
Wow. Dreamz didn't surprise me, but Earl did.
Lisi proved what a real ass she could be. When she started saying "eenie meenie minie mo" I cringed. The self righteousness of the jury members is even funnier. Too bad they can't be judged. Boo suddenly starts spouting about Christianity... This jury crap has its limits and I think has really jumped the shark. |
I never really enjoy the final episode, but I think tonight's was especially disgusting. Dreamz is too stupid to feel guilty about screwing over Yao... and unfortunately, he was too stupid to realize that he had no shot at winning even if he kept the necklace.
As for the jury... Lisi was a definite bitch, but Alex's speech just made me sick. What a complete lack of class he showed. I never understood why the jury members generally seem to have such bad attitudes. You lost... get over it. |
Yeah, the jury members always go over the top with the hatred of those who made it to the final vote. I can understand it to a point, after all, most of them had no idea they were being voted off when they went to their last tribal council. You have to figure that if you went into a situation where you were confident of the outcome, yet got blindsided and voted of, you'd still have a few choice words for those who did that to you. I was surprised, however, at how many shots were taken at Cassandra. I don't remember her scheming nearly as hard as others.
As for Dreamz, he surprised me. Like Yao Man, I thought he'd live up to the bargin. Especially because I KNOW when Dreamz made the deal, he had every intention of living up to his word, but changed his mind. He wasn't playing the player like he claimed. Look at all of the private on-camera interviews, never once did he say that he was going to go back on his word, he kept spewing this "I'm a man, I'm honorable, I'm a great father, I'm DREAMZ" horsepucky. At least Johnny Fairplay admitted to the camera his BS was all BS from the beginning. The worst part is that Dre already screwed Alex, Mookie and Eduardo (guaranteed non-votes for him) and the doublecross of Yao guaranteed the rest of them not voting for him... why bother? He certianly couldn't talk his way into others giving him a vote. He basically stole a million dollars from Yao and gave it to Earl with that one move. Prick. However, Earl was definately worthy of the prize. Of the 3 there, he deserved it most. |
yep. poor yau-man. He deserved to win. but, of course, the best player doesn't always win.
Survivor China is going to be great |
So if nobody else got any votes, who gets the second-place money?
|
^ hmmm...very good question. It certainly wasn't discussed last night. Maybe they should make a charitable donation to the Fiji peoples.
|
I think they should have made them do a live fire-starting contest during the reunion show for 2nd place.
Oh wait, that might have taken hours |
Give it to YAO MAN!!
|
Was I the only one that got dizzy listening to dreamz talk at the reunion?
Im psyched for China, I cant wait to see how they incorporate the culture into the show. |
Quote:
|
Dre was covering his ass because he knew he got caught in a BIG LIE and was trying to save face. And he's not able to man up and say that he changed his mind.
|
Well, Yao Man proved to be so popular, maybe they'll offer him a second chance in China like that guy Rupert and Stephanie in earlier seasons.
Dreamz did try some fancy footwork with his excuses, but he tripped all over his own feet. I wasn't surprised, considering his previous actions with the 4 Horsemen (wonder if those guys ever gave some serious thought to the meaning of the 4 Horsemen?) :skeptical: |
If that wasn't the most bitter jury ever....
Listen, I know you're pissed that Dreamz "betrayed" you and you got voted out, but look at it from his point of view. He was clearly the low man in the Four Horseman alliance, so if he could find a better option for himself, isn't that the smart play? Didn't Alex help vote out Mookie? I hate when the jury gets all self righteous |
I hear that the survivor after china will be an all-stars 2 edition. This would be for non-winners from seasons 9+ so I would bet that YauMan is a shoe in for this one. Ozzy I imagine will be back as well.
|
non winners? They had winners on the 1st one....is this a new rule for the new allstars?
|
makes sense to have non-winners. The past winners got booted fairly early last time. Plus no one wants to see people win twice. At least I don't
|
I know this is off topic but is anyone planning on watching that Pirates show thats starting on thursdays at the end of the month in place of survivor?
|
Yeah, i definately read non-winners, I'll try and find the article later and repost. They even name some potential candidates.
What is this pirates show? I havnt heard about it? And what about that other amazing race type show that played last summer, treasure hunters I think it was called - is that coming back? |
I plan on watching at least the first episode of the Pirate show... If it sucks, I'm out, but if it looks like it has potential, I'll stay in.
|

Unfortunately, Wikipedia says that the premier drew around 7 million viewers and the finale drew 5 million... (in comparison, Survivor: Fiji had around 16 million viewers) so I'm not sure that's good enough to justify another season. |
