I shall see it in the theater... The preview alone for this one blows the past 4 movies out of the water. Some things you just have to see on the big screen.

If I had my druthers, I'd see it opening night (and I despise going to big movies opening night). However, I'll have to wait until the day after

What does everyone think about the Harry Potter theme park? I wonder if it will be more true to the movies or the books? Wont it be awesome to see things that we have spent so much time imagining?

Lady,
I think it's a pretty cool idea! I have no qualms admitting to the geek in me that it'd be a kick-ass time. I wonder how it's going to play out, honestly. Who's the big money behind the park? I thought I read somewhere that it's Universal Studios. If that is the case, I'm sure they'll do a knockout job.

I saw this tonight.
4/10 This was exactly as expected. Boring pace, storytelling without suspense, action without intensity, and too much happening without explanation or good reason. I haven't liked a single Harry Potter movie I've seen. Granted, I haven't read any of the books; I just happen to find myself with people who want to see the movies... and they are bad movies. Nothing is enjoyable about men waggling tiny sticks at eachother and acting like their entire power comes from them. You simply can't make that look exciting. Nothing is enjoyable about interpreting a book into a movie... these stories need to be smacked a bit harder by the Adaptation stick. They need to be made for the theater.

LS and I saw it today. I'll leave her to the major review as she has read the books and is a Harry fanatic.
Me? Let me start by saying, I haven't read the books nor have I any inclination to ever read the books. That said, I took the movie for what it was worth, escapism. It does very well.I found it pretty fast paced, so much so that, yes, the story seemed a bit hodgepodged together and the further devolopment of characters lacked. But this series is geared for the younger set, tweens and younger. Had I been a kid I would have been lost in its glory. If you go with adult mind and expect some great movie with depth and meaning... you will be disappointed. The special effects were good, but again if you expect super duper sci-fi cutting edge effects.... you will be disappointed. As well you should be, I truly don't think it's geared to be that either. End result, a good escapism movie like the others. For me it was like riding a roller coaster, fast paced, exciting, a start that sets the tone and just swish on top of the hill and the rest just whisks you around so fast you miss alot of scenery but at the end, you have a good feeling and find you may want another ride.

Definitely a roller coaster-escapism feel, as Pan said. I dragged ktspktsp to see it last night (in Iceland!) and the theatre was packed with teens, which was slightly annoying. We also had the requisite Icelandic FIFTEEN MINUTE INTERMISSION smack dab in the middle of the movie... damn I hate that. But anyway, I dunno, I liked it... I didn't go into it with any high expectations, but I know the story inside and out from the books, so it was a thrill (as always) just to see it all come to life in front of me. For what it is, I think they did a great job. And if you didn't like it... READ THE BOOKS, dammit!

Oh, so that's what you call a movie without any development, suspense or explanation... an *escapism* movie. I'll remember that.

I admit that if the only reason you are going to Harry Potter is because other people are taking you, and not because you read the books and know all the background and details (many of which they omit, due to time limits, in the movie), then yeah, it's going to be disappointing. I really don't know how they can make the movies better, because to do so they would have to include so much more material and the film would go to like 3 hours or something. I think the films are really only made for people who read the books, unfortunately.

Saw it in matinee yesterday. Screaming children central.
It was okay. This wasn't my favorite of the books, and it wasn't my favorite of the movies (still prefer Goblet of Fire). I thought that Harry's whiny bitchiness in this episode was better motivated in the movie than it was in the book. |

I think the movie was very very well done. At first I was disappointed since so much was left out/altered, but then you think of the beast of a book and all that happened in it that they had to cram into a movie, and I think it was well done.
I do, however, think that without reading the book, it would be no where near as good to me. I wouldn't understand why they do certain things or what the significance of them was. Also, Snape needed WAY more screen time.

I think they did a great job at casting. I would've expected Umbridge to be a bit toadier, but she nailed the "hem hem" cough in my mind. Luna was even cast well, and Bellatrix was spot on (again in my mind). They definitely jumped plot points, and 5 minutes into the movie I could tell the huge gaping holes they were going to leave due to time restraints. The thing about the books is you can imagine everything that's happening, and create your own pictures; you find in the movie that something you really wanted to see on the screen gets skipped, or is done MUCH differently than you imagined it, other times the director nails it. Considering time constraints, I enjoyed the movie; if they put everything I would've like to have seen it would have easily been a 3 hour movie. |

Definitely. I actually didn't like Umbridge's "hem hem" that much. I guess I imagined it differently. They really did a good job at making you despise her though.

Just with no other preconcieved notions from the books, the movies make sense to me. But I can tell there is more depth and the movies do give me a small desire to think about reading the books. Then I hear LS tell me how much they cut and what they cut and I realize, me personally, if I had read the books and then saw the movies, I'd be very disappointed. It is what it is and the series of movies to me make sense and tell a good story on their own. Quote:
I do think they need to make these films faster and release them a lot sooner. These "kids" are going to be growing fast and they may lose their passion for their parts and the last 2 movies are true garbage. Of course, what does Rowlings care? Even with book 7, she can write... "See Harry run" "See Ron run" "Run Harry, run Ron." ... and not care. She knows it will sell millions and she has more money than the next 5 generations of her family will ever be able to spend, so what does she care how the book and movies end now. Up to this point, the movies and books were geared to sell the next book and movie... now, all the books are out and you have to wait 3 years to finish off the movies?????? LOL yeah right.
