Letterman--counting the days?
David Letterman is planning to take time off this summer, although he hasn't announced how long he'll be away from his show.
This comes after he had to watch from the side as guest hosts filled in while he recovered from the shingles and of course, his biggest scare was a few years ago when he had bypass surgery. Do all of the things signal a beginning of the end for Dave? I'm not suggesting that he would leave the show this year or even next, but do you think after more than 20 years, he's looking forward to retirement??? Leno consistently beats him in the ratings--but who is your favorite late night host? |

Letterman's definitely my host of choice, and in New Orleans, at least, he consistently beats out Leno. Leno has good schtick, like Headlines and that thing where he interviews random people and discovers how stupid they are, but I think Letterman has better variety in that department.

Letterman has always been my favorite. I own every Top Ten book they ever printed . His show's always been hilarious and is worth staying up late for. I hope he's not calling it quits yet. I'm not so much worried about Dave not being there, just who they could ever think of to replace him...

I can't stand Leno, I used to be a big Letterman fan, but he just lost his appeal to me a few years ago. Jimmy Kimmel hasn't done anything to impress me since having Snoop Dogg co host with him. I'm going to place my vote for Conan, because as mentioned above, he's such a spaz, and he wrote some of the best Simpsons episodes ever. He also came up with some of the more memorable sketch characters on late night tv, Triumph the insult spouting dog, Pimpbot 5000, The Masturbating Bear, and Bill Clinton.
My least favorite late night host by far, even more than Leno is a guy up here in the Great White North called Mike Bullard. His gimmick is incompetently making fun of the audience during his monologue. Last edited by rockzilla; 06-10-2003 at 10:35 AM.. |

Well, out of the four guys, Conan is probably the best, but it seems like he's gotten a little too wacky since Andy left. Dave's usually really good with guests, but his little segments with the audience and that asian deli guy are pretty damn stupid. Leno is so absolutely horrible with guests. His questions are so scripted and typical. Headlines are always good though. And Kilborn, well, I don't really watch him.
John Stewart is the best host on tv right now. |

Personally, I miss the later shows of "The Magic Show" hosted by none other than Magic Johnson. He was rough around the edges(and he towered over the guests ) but it came to be a respectable show & something I enjoyed watching before it got canned. That said, I don't watch Leno or Letterman except on rare cases. Conan is funny sometimes, other times it seems like he played under powerlines as a kid....

Letterman used to be tops in my book. The quality of his show has, in my opinion, gone way down in the past few years. I watch Leno now, and will catch Conan, if I happen to still be up. Sometimes though, I will watch Letterman out of a sense of guilt over switched loyalties. I always end up feeling cheated somehow, and wishing for the glory days of Late Night.

I've always liked Letterman. The sillier the better. His old NBC shows would make a great DVD compilation.
Lately, though, I've gotten tired of ALL of them. Even Leno's headlines have gotten lame. TFP is a MUCH better way to spend the evening.

Letterman is my favorite by far, then Conan, then Kraig, and, finally Leno - no, wait!, then John Stewart, then Jimmy Kimmel, and THEN Leno! (I don't like Leno - can you tell? )
I don't think Letterman is necessarily going anywhere anytime soon, but I do think that he'srealizing there's more to life than work after things like his bypass surgery and shingles, and his priorities are changing a bit. I say good for him. How Leno beats him in the ratings, I'll never know.

I havent been able to watch Letterman in recent years.. I just dont find him funny. Of course, I really have a hard time watching any late night TV anymore. I used to love Conan, but I've been getting really annoyed with the crappy sketches his writers have been coming up with lately, and the cast that plays along on the sketch (minus the band) all suck. Of course, the worst person on late night TV right now is Martin Sargent on TechTV. They should have never given that man his own show, he sucked when he was on the Screen Savers.

I'm from Indiana and proud the Dave is also from here, considering the state doesn't get much publicity. I even went to Ball State, but I perfer Leno to him, his humor just isn't that funny to me. I still like Conan, but it is on so late.

Letterman is my favorite. Can't understand how Leno beats him in the ratings. Dave is taking off some Fridays. He's been taping Friday's show on Thursday for a while anyway. Carson cut back from 5 a week to 4 (taped shows on Monday). Don't think Dave is going away anytime soon, just cutting back in the summer.
