OK, so apparently David Tennant gets around! He's been connected with 2 people involved in the production of Doctor Who, and he recently dated Sophia Myles for two years. (She's 28, he's 37.) And now, he's apparently dating the real life daughter of the fifth doctor who plays his daughter as the tenth doctor! And she's 23! (And even cuter than Sophia Myles.)

Oh, to be David Tennant.

Spoiler: It was nice of the writers to get us ready by mentioning her loss before this episode. Softened the news a bit.

BTW, looks like Martha and Mickey will be joining Torchwood. That's kinda cool. I'm still going to miss Tosh and Owne something fierce.

Spoiler: well, Davros is probably going to survive somehow and that's an easy way to bring back the Daleks back

Other than that, the finale (speaking of both parts as a whole) was enjoyable, but extremely "fanwanky" and there were a number of things that just made no sense or were just totally unnecessary and stupid.

So, par for the course with RTD's writing.

Spoiler: Having two Doctor's due to some crazy mistake would have made a great standalone episode. As part of this episode, and with the explanation that was given, it was just stupid. It's like RTD said "We have all the various companion people from the new series together, and we've got a giant weapon that threatens to destroy all of reality, you know what else would be great? Let's have two tenth Doctors!"

I'm totally OK with The Doctor using the hand to regenerate into the same Doctor. That's fine with me, and doing that should have left the hand dead. For the hand to inexplicably retain the regeneration energy (which The Doctor blew away) and have that regeneration be inexplicably set off by Donna touching it....just makes no sense. And, OK, so by using the hand during regneration, the original tenth Doctor stayed as David Tennant. What did the hand use to make sure he regenerated into David Tennant instead of some other Doctor?

Spoiler: And then there's the ending with Donna. It was a very sad ending, and it was done rather well, but I really think Donna should have died. It makes more sense that it would kill her, but instead The Doctor just has to do his Time Lord Vulcan Mind Meld Magic and voila, Donna loses her memories and is safe. I'd much rather have seen a similarly touching ending where Donna goes home, dying from overload, and spends her last moments with her family, and finally gets some validation from her mother. But, no, RTD refuses to kill a companion (and, based on Stephen Moffat's track record, he probably does too).

ok....here are my thoughts:
Spoiler:
While I absolutely hate what was done to Donna, to me it was a fate worse than actual death, I will console myself with the fact that it means she can actually be on the show again at some point in the future..while I didnt like her at first she grew on me a LOT and I ended up loving her.

David Tennant's acting is beyond superb, what that man can get across with just a look on his face is awe inspiring, the looks when Davros was talking about the people that had died for him, and the look on his face when he left Rose on the beach with the other doctor just tore me to pieces.

I knew the hand was going to have some effect on the regen and to me it wasnt a cop out, my only issue is it should have been "used up" then and not been able to come into play to give us the doctor donna and the other doctor.

I've known for weeks that Martha was going to Torchwood, but I hadnt heard anything about Mickey, thats a pleasant surprise.

Rose....eh, never could stand her and she wasnt anything outstanding in this episode

Dalek Caan.....WHOA who would have thought THAT twist? it was excellent. Though I wasnt real jazzed with the "star wars" like storyline of Davros pretty much being a Darth Vadar and not really his own man

German Daleks....loved it

Wilfred at the end, had me in tear...but we all thought we'd lost Rose and obviously we didnt, so there is hope for Donna

I really wanted to see the Master come back into play, but can understand why he didnt

all in all I cannot complain a lot, it was a most awesome episode

Spoiler: I am actually kinda sad that Dalek Caan is dead... Yeah he kinda went coocoo for cocoa puffs, but he was a Dalek that had thousands of lives in the time vorex to watch over and over the horror of the Dalek race. He went beyond his programming to get back at them. Why he brought Davros back after deciding the Dalek race must die, is beyond me (coocoo for cocoa puffs, remember).

However, now imagine what the Daleks could become if Daleks like Caan and Seth (the human Dalek) were to make the new Dalek race?

Imagine those flying pepper pots---now with an egg-beater to go with their plunger. Disgusting, I know, but they'd be the must have friendly home companion of the universe: cooks, cleans, and peppers your food!

In addition:

Spoiler: Anyone else notice the slight cannon conflict: the Doctor was already stated to be half human in the 1996 movie, which as far as I know, is cannon with these new seasons. If it is not, we ought to have a an extra Doctor regeneration.

So if he was already half human, and then metashifted with Donna, wouldn't he be 3/4 human then?

The DOCTOR from the Movie is cannon (McGann's face appeared in Family of Blood) - the PLOT is not fully cannon (he's fully Time Lord, and that's been expressed in the episode with the Master).

The episode was really good, Spoiler: and the ending with Donna's family was interesting, and sad, but not a total shock - it also leaves the option of being undone later.

Don't know if you got the trailer for the Christms episode after your version, but it was good Spoiler: Victorian Cybermen.

Right. 100% agreed. Spoiler: They could have had basically the same plot without the second Doctor, and it would have made a lot more sense.

io9 posted a pretty entertaining (and mostly accurate IMO) review of the finale today (obviously spoiler-ific):

Quote:
Doctor Who's Midlife Metacrisis   click to show
The review touches on this, but I feel like repeating the point: RTD really likes his reverse time paradox timey-wimey mumbo jumbo magic! Things happen in the present because of things that happen in the future when those things that happen in the future only happen because of something that happens in the present. And this happens all the time. It's really just technobabble for "we wrote event X because we want event Y and we're too lazy to come up with a reasonable explanation for event Y, so instead we'll just say event X happened because it had to happen for event Y to happen and it's some time paradox, and if we say it with enough complexity the viewers will just swallow it whole!" Every now and then I can accept that, but they've really pushed the limits of those cop-outs over the years. It makes so little sense, I can't even complain about it in a simple manner!

On top of that...can we please stop with the randomly prescient characters who make reference to the future fate of our heroes for no reason whatsoever all throughout the season? I can only hope that Moffat will stop that.

Don't get me wrong, the finale was entertaining...but this stuff makes it frustrating because there's potential for so much more.

I completely agree with you SM.

Every companion brought round, their only purpose in the story to do their little bit....and that's it. Sarah Jane's silly little necklace, Martha's UNIT connection to the Osterhaagan device thing, Gwen and the Cardiff rift....at the end when everyone was hanging round the TARDIS, laughing and such, it just got a bit too far beyond stupid in my opinion.

I watched it. I enjoyed it. The Donna storyline was pretty good and Tennant was a joy to watch as always, but--you're right--it could have been so much more.

As for the Christmas special...jeez louise, are you kidding me...another Cybermen episode...? Every time the Doctor turns around it seems there's another resurrection of either the Cybermen or the damned Daleks...
I get it they're bad...end of the human race and all that, but fuck, give us a break, eh?

The Cybermen actually haven't been around since Doomsday, so I think there has been a fairly reasonable gap there, unlike the Daleks who have appeared in every season so far. So, I don't mind that they're using the Cybermen again. That said, for god's sake how about a crisis on some planet other than Earth!

We get it. Humans are special and the whole universe loves us. Can the evil alien races focus on conquering some other civilizations now? I don't want a Doctor Who where Earth society is totally different than the one I live in, and apparently neither does RTD, so instead we have countless alien invasions and then...everyone goes back to life as usual?! Totally unbelievable.

Look at stories like Genesis of the Daleks. I realize we're not going to get one long serialized story arc like they used to do, and that's OK (though I'd like it). But Genesis of the Daleks is a complex and important story, involving one of the most important enemies, and it takes place in an entirely alien environment. How great! Is it too much to ask for something similar in the new Doctor Who?

Don't get me wrong; I'll reiterate that I really enjoy the show and it's very entertaining. But it could be so much better. (Not to mention that if they got away from Earth more often - maybe even for a finale! - then the plots would be a lot less derivitive.)

Stupid CBC still isn't airing Season 4 so I'm slowly working through the episodes online. I've been staying out of this thread to avoid spoilers.

I just say The Wasp and the Unicorn and this season just gets better and better with every episode. The scene where the Doctor and Donna are playing charades as he's detoxing was brilliant.

I know the season is building to some sort of Rose reunion, but Donna is simply spectacular.

Ah well, back out of the thread for me.

Heh.

Actually I watched the finale a couple of nights ago but haven't mustered the energy to post about it given how long ago the rest of you saw it.

I really am going to miss Donna. Catherine tate has enormous range as an actress and her energy and commitment to the role elevated the show.

As to her exit, I thought they were rather smart about it. Sure a death would have worked as well, but somehow her amnesia is more fitting. (Regenerating her into Romana III would be a mistake )

One of the main themes of her character is that she's a loser. No career, no man, no respect from her mother, living at home... By erasing her exploits with the doctor she's lost again. Her whole life has been a chain of missed opportunities: Her wedding, the man in the library, and now travelling with the Doctor.

They underlined this point in the coda of the finale when her father asks the doctor how to explain the latest alien catastrophe without triggering her memories. The doctor says: "It'll just be a story. One of those Donna Noble stories where she missed it all again."

The last time we see her she's gossiping on the phone like a teenager without the slightest idea that there are people "...singing songs of Donna Noble a thousand, million light-years away..

Okay, one small easter egg I liked in the runnup to the finale was at the end of Turn Left when the Tardis glowed red and you could hear the cloister bell. The last time they did that was in Logopolis when they were setting up Tom Baker's death.

Also, the actress who played the possessed woman in Midnight also played Rose in Russel T.'s mini-series drama Bob and Rose. I recommed watching that if you like relationship dramas.

Can you believe the CBC now won't be broadcasting Season 4 until the Fall? Unbelievable.

I wasn't implying that he is destitute. The BBC2 gig was a job. He's not doing it anymore. Therefore he is out of that particular work.

As for the replacement, here's an EW columnists' view on the rumor and speculations about the new mayor of Whoville

Quote:
Bits and Bobs (Emergency Vol. 16 1/2): 'Who' should replace David Tennant as 'The Doctor'?

Oct 30, 2008, 01:14 PM | by Aubry D’Arminio

Whovians, you knew it would happen. David Tennant, perhaps the best Time Lord ever, announced yesterday that he’s retiring his sonic screwdriver after 2009's Doctor Who specials. Which begs the question: Who will/should replace him? Rumors have swirled about everyone from Eddie Izzard, to Robert Carlyle, to Rhys Ifans, to that bloke from History Boys, Russell Tovey. But my money’s on Irishman James Nesbitt or the hilarious Richard Coyle. Both have previous connections with new head writer and exec producer Steven Moffat (James starred in Jekyll, while Richard appeared in Coupling) and both are pretty damn versatile.

Yet, if I could cast my dream 11th Doctor, I’d go with either blondie Marc Warren (Hustle, State of Play) or scene-stealing Jason O’Mara (who currently rocks the U.S. Life on Mars). I know, I know, Warren’s been on the show before, but that hasn’t stopped David Morrisey and John Simm from being named as possible successors to Tennant’s TARDIS throne. And if O'Mara’s up for a little work during his summer break from Mars -- that’s if poor, underrated Mars is even still around -- I’d love to hear his real Irish accent more often.

That said, how brilliant would it be to see a woman in the role (AbFab icon Jennifer Saunders’ name has also been thrown in the mix). Former Doctor Paul McGann once mentioned he'd like to see Dame Maggie Smith or Diana Rigg's kid, Rachael Stirling, get the part. He took some heat for it, but I’m up for a little Time Lady action, how about you? Anyhow, if you were in Mr. Moffat's shoes, who would you cast as the new Doctor?
Out of the choices offered, I also think Ediie Izzard would be good, but I think he sadly may have become a bit too Americanized.

I also think James Nesbitt would be good.

As far as Russel Brand goes, I don't see why it would be such a stretch. From what I know of him, he's flamboyant, charismatic, and a bit deranged, al charachteristics that the doctor needs. I don't know a whole lot about Brand, but from what I have seen he reminds me of an (if this is possible) ADD Eddie Izzard. I think a little rockstar sprinkled into the Doctor could be fun.
